South African Airways (SAA) has relaunched flights to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Effective today (20 January 2025), the airline is operating daily return flights between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNB) in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
Flights depart Johannesburg at 22:00 and arrive in Dar es Salaam at 02:30+1. The daily service from Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg departs at 05:10 to arrive in Johannesburg at 07:55. Dar es Salaam is one hour ahead of Johannesburg.

South Africa: Airlink to increase flights between Johannesburg <> George!
South African privately-owned regional carrier Airlink will increase flights between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and George Airport (GRJ) in George. Effective 11 December 2021, the airline will operate daily return flights to the capital city of the Garden Route. The extra flights are in addition to the early morning and late afternoon services that Airlink introduced on the route at the start of November 2021. The airline operates its modern Embraer E-Jets on the route. Customers have a choice of comfortable window or aisle business class and economy seats (there are no “middle” seats on any Airlink aircraft). Airlink also offers flights between George and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town.

South Africa: Airlink to re-introduce flights between Johannesburg <> George!
South African privately-owned regional carrier Airlink is set to re-introduce scheduled flights between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and George Airport (GRJ) in George. Effective 01 November 2021, the airline will initially operate early morning and late afternoon flights on the route. Midday services on weekends will be added from 06 November 2021. The early morning service will not operate on certain days during the Christmas and New Year recess. From 31 January 2022, Airlink will serve the route with three daily flights (Mondays to Fridays), one flight on Saturdays and two on Sundays. Airlink also offers flights between George and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town.
Flights to the Garden Route’s gateway city will be operated with Airlink's modern Embraer E-jet offering customers a choice of business class and economy seats.

Emirates to expand South Africa operations from October 2021!
The largest airline of the United Arab Emirates and the flag carrier of the Emirate of Dubai, Emirates, has announced that it will be expanding its operations in and out of South Africa. Effective from 31 October 2021, the airline will boost its schedule to a total of 28 weekly flights between Dubai and Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The ramp up of operations will see double daily flights to Johannesburg, including the introduction of an Airbus A380 on one of the daily flights, in addition to daily services to both Cape Town and Durban. From 01 January 2022, Emirates will serve Johannesburg with double daily Airbus A380 services.
Emirates’ flight schedule expansion comes in response to a surge in customer demand to Dubai as tourist visas have opened up for all nationalities, in addition to the easing of restrictions across some destinations that now allow quarantine-free entry for South Africans.
Emirates further announced that it is set to revive its strategic partnership and cooperation with South African Airways (SAA) once the airline is resuming operations on 23 September 2021. The Emirates-SAA partnership dates back to 1997, and is Emirates’ first ever codeshare agreement with another carrier.

Air Namibia: Flights between Windhoek <> Frankfurt will not get suspened!
According to a press release by Air Namibia, the airline continues to operate flights between Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek and Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, as per the published schedule for the foreseeable future. [link] The airline also confirms in the press release, that the Cabinet of Namibia has made no decision to suspend or terminate Air Namibia's return service to Frankfurt. Earlier this week Namibian tabloid Confidente reported that the Government of Namibia has instructed Air Namibia to consider suspending its Windhoek <> Frankfurt route with immediate effect. [link]

South Africa: Qatar Airways & Comair sign codeshare agreement!
The state-owned flag carrier of Qatar, Qatar Airways, and South Africa-based Comair, which operates scheduled services on domestic routes as a British Airways franchisee and also as a low-cost carrier under its own kulula.com brand, have signed a codeshare agreement. Effective 23 February 2016, Qatar Airways will place its code on flights that have British Airways livery, operated by its franchise Comair, from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban, Harare, Victoria Falls, and Port Elizabeth. Qatar Airways will also place its code on flights operated by Comair from Cape Town to Durban and Port Elizabeth.

Brussels Airlines to increase flights to Entebbe & Kigali!
The flag carrier and largest airline of Belgium, Brussels Airlines, is set to launch a forth weekly flight on Mondays (SN471) between Brussels Airport (BRU) in Brussels and Kigali International Airport (KGL) in Kigali, Rwanda, via Entebbe International Airport (EBB) in Entebbe, Uganda, on 28 March 2015. With the addition of this flight, Brussels Airlines' overall service to Entebbe will increase from 3 to 4 weekly flights, while Kigali sees increase from 5 to 6 weekly flights.

fastjet is set to launch domestic flights in Zimbabwe!
According to the online edition of Zimbabwean newspaper "The Herald", fastjet (Zimbabwe) is set to introduce domestic flights between Harare and Bulawayo and between Harare and Victoria Falls.
Zimbabwe's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development already granted the airline an Air Service Permit (ASP) in March 2015, but fastjet (Zimbabwe) still has to submit certain documents to the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) to complete the application process for an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC). The AOC will give the airline the formal approval to commence flights in Zimbabwe.

Egyptair to stop flights between Cairo <> Harare
update (15 Oct 2014): According to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), Egyptair will reintroduce flights between Cairo International Airport (CAI) in Cairo and Harare International Airport (HRO) in Harare, Zimbabwe in November 2014!

Ethiopian Airlines to increase flights to Toronto (Canada)
Great news for Canadians planning to travel to Africa. Ethiopia's flag carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, will increase its service between Addis Ababa and Toronto. From 19 June 2013 the airline will operate three instead of two weekly flights between the two destinations on-board Boeing's 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. The outbound service will be operated via Rome (Italy), while the inbound service will be a direct flight.

Condor to launch direct flights from Munich (Germany) and Vienna (Austria) to Mombasa
update (08 Nov 2013): Condor launched its seasonal Mombasa service on 05 November 2013. The airline operates its flights to Kenya from Munich via Vienna (Austria) to Mombasa.

Fastjet to expand its network in Tanzania
Tanzanian low-cost airline Fastjet has announced some great news for travellers in Tanzania. The airline will launch daily flights between Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) on Zanzibar as well as between Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and Mwanza Airport (MWZ) on 18 March 2013. Both flights will be operated on board a Airbus A320.

Rwandair to increase flights between Kigali and Johannesburg
Rwanda's flag carrier, Rwandair, will add three more flights per week between Kigali and Johannesburg in South Africa from 01 June 2012. This is in addition to the airline’s current four flights per week between the two destinations.
Rwandair is currently flying to 16 destinations in 12 countries, including Nairobi and Mombasa (Kenya), Dar Es Salaam and Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Johannesburg (South Africa), Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and Mumbai in India.

Air France & KLM - new baggage policy on flights between Southern Africa and the US and Canada
Air France and KLM have revised their baggage policy on flights between Southern Africa and the US and Canada effective for all new bookings made and valid for travel after 01 November 2011.
The free baggage allowance in Economy (Voyager) is now 1 baggage item per person weighing 23 kg maximum at no extra charge. Flying Blue Silver, Gold, Platinum, or SkyTeam Elite/Elite Plus member can transport one additional baggage item weighing up to 23 kg. All other passengers will be charged for a 2nd baggage item at CAD/USD75 on flights departing from Canada and the US or at an additional fee of €100 (or equivalent to the local currency) on flights departing from Southern Africa.
If the weight of one of your baggage items exceeds 23 kg/50lb, you must pay a fee of CAD/USD75 on flights departing from Canada or the US or an additional fee of €100 (or equivalent to the local currency) on flights departing from Southern Africa. A special authorization is required from the telephone sales service for all baggage items that exceed 32kg/70lb in weight.
If the dimensions (height + length + width) of one of your baggage items exceeds 158cm/62in, you must pay an additional fee of CAD/USD300 on flights departing from Canada or the US and €300 (or equivalent to the local currency) on flights departing from Southern Africa. A special authorization is required from the telephone sales service for all baggage items whose dimensions exceed 158cm/70in (height + length + width).

Lufthansa to commence flights to Zambia
Europe’s largest airliner and Germany'S flag carrier, Lufthansa, is expected to start flying into Zambia through a code-sharing agreement with Ethopian Airlines around mid-August.
According to Zambian newspapers, Christoph Meier, head of corporate communications Southeast Europe, Africa, Middle East & Pakistan at Lufthansa, said that the airline will "launch a code-share service from Frankfurt to Lusaka, via Addis Ababa as early as August. The Addis to Lusaka segment will be operated by our partner Ethopian Airlines. Furthermore, Lusaka and Livingstone will be linked to Germany through code-share flights via Johannesburg in co-operation with South African Airlines."
The application from Ethopian Airlines to start operating the Lufthansa flights is currently getting reviewed by the Zambian Ministry of Communications and Transport.
