Emirates and SAA expand codeshare to Botswana, Namibia, Zambia & Zimbabwe

Travellers flying to Southern Africa with Emirates will soon have a much wider choice of onward destinations. The airline has expanded its long-standing partnership with South African Airways (SAA), making it easier to book journeys across South Africa and several neighbouring countries on a single itinerary.

For international visitors, this is welcome news. Whether you're planning a safari in Botswana, exploring Namibia's deserts, visiting Victoria Falls or combining several Southern African countries in one trip, the expanded partnership should make travel more convenient.

What has changed?

Until now, the partnership mainly allowed South African Airways (SAA) to sell tickets on Emirates flights between Dubai and South Africa, with connections onwards through Emirates' extensive global network.

Following regulatory approval, the arrangement now works both ways. Emirates can also place its flight code on selected South African Airways (SAA) services, allowing passengers to book more regional flights directly through Emirates.

For travellers, that usually means:

• one booking for the entire journey
• baggage checked through to the final destination (subject to the ticket and airport procedures)
• easier flight connections
• greater protection if a connecting flight is delayed compared with booking separate tickets

New destinations available through the partnership

The expanded reciprocal codeshare adds nine routes operated by South African Airways (SAA).

Domestic South Africa

Travellers arriving in Johannesburg can now connect more easily to:

• Cape Town
• Durban
• Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)

Regional Southern Africa

The partnership also adds convenient access from Johannesburg to:

• Windhoek, Namibia
• Gaborone, Botswana
• Lusaka, Zambia
• Harare, Zimbabwe
• Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
• Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo

These additions make Johannesburg an even more useful gateway for exploring Southern Africa.

Why this matters for international travellers

Many visitors from Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East already use Emirates to reach South Africa via Dubai. Until now, travelling beyond Johannesburg often required a separate booking with another airline.

With the expanded codeshare, itineraries become much simpler. For example, travellers may now be able to book journeys such as:

• London – Dubai – Windhoek
• Frankfurt – Dubai – Victoria Falls
• Sydney – Dubai – Gaborone
• Mumbai – Dubai – Lusaka

all under a single reservation where the codeshare is available.

This reduces the hassle of managing separate tickets and can make complex multi-country itineraries easier to organise.

A partnership spanning nearly 30 years

Emirates and South African Airways (SAA) have worked together for almost three decades, with Emirates first launching flights to Johannesburg in 1995.

Today, Emirates operates 56 weekly flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, giving travellers plenty of choice when planning trips to and from South Africa.

South African Airways and Turkish Airlines launch new codeshare partnership

Travellers heading to Southern Africa now have more flexible flight options thanks to a new codeshare partnership between South African Airways (SAA), the national flag carrier of South Africa, and Turkish Airlines, the national flag carrier of Türkiye. The agreement officially took effect on 15 July 2026, with the first codeshare flights operating from 16 July 2026.

A codeshare allows two airlines to sell seats on each other's flights, making it easier to book connecting journeys on a single ticket and, on eligible itineraries, enjoy smoother transfers and through-checked baggage.

Under the new partnership:

• Turkish Airlines now places its TK flight code on selected South African Airways domestic and regional services from Johannesburg to:
• Cape Town
• Durban
• Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
• Windhoek
• Harare
• Victoria Falls
• Mauritius

• South African Airways places its SA flight code on Turkish Airlines services linking Southern Africa with:
• Istanbul
• Paris
• London
• Frankfurt

For travellers, the partnership offers easier connections via Johannesburg and Istanbul, providing improved access to destinations across Southern Africa as well as Turkish Airlines' extensive global network.

Etihad Airways and fastjet Zimbabwe announce interline, codeshare and frequent flyer partnership

Travelling to Zimbabwe is set to become even easier after Etihad Airways and fastjet Zimbabwe signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a new interline partnership, codeshare agreement and frequent flyer partnership.

Once implemented, the partnership will allow travellers to book seamless journeys on a single ticket, with convenient onward connections from Harare to Victoria Falls, Bulawayo and Johannesburg aboard fastjet Zimbabwe. Ticket sales are expected to open on 24 August 2026.

The agreement also supports Etihad Airways' new direct service between Abu Dhabi and Harare, which is scheduled to launch on 24 March 2027. The new route will provide international travellers with easier access to some of Zimbabwe's most popular destinations, particularly Victoria Falls.

In addition to the planned interline partnership and codeshare agreement, the airlines also intend to introduce a frequent flyer partnership, enabling eligible passengers to earn and redeem Etihad Guest miles across both airlines in the future.

For travellers, the new MoU marks another positive step towards improved air connectivity between Zimbabwe and the rest of the world, making future trips to destinations such as Victoria Falls more convenient.

South African Airways and CemAir launch domestic codeshare partnership!

South African Airways (SAA) has entered into a strategic domestic codeshare agreement with privately owned South African airline CemAir, marking a significant expansion of air connectivity within South Africa. This partnership strengthens connectivity between major cities and niche destinations not previously served by SAA’s network.

Unlike SAA’s existing codeshare agreements, which primarily focus on regional African and long-haul international routes, this collaboration is exclusively domestic. Its core objective is to improve accessibility, convenience, and network depth for travellers moving within South Africa.

Under the agreement, both airlines will place their respective codes on selected flights, allowing passengers to book seamless, single-ticket itineraries via official airline websites, mobile applications, and authorised travel agents. The codeshare also enables baggage through-check and coordinated service standards, simplifying travel between primary gateways and secondary destinations.

CemAir’s Role in regional connectivity
Established in 2005, CemAir has built a strong reputation as a reliable regional carrier, operating scheduled services between key business centres and leisure destinations. Its route network includes Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, George, East London, Gqeberha, Margate, Kimberley, Hoedspruit, and Mala Mala, among others.

Operating a fleet of regional jets and turboprop aircraft, CemAir plays a critical role in connecting remote and niche destinations to South Africa's main aviation hubs. The new partnership complements SAA’s network by extending reach into areas that are vital for tourism, business travel, and regional economic development.

South African Airways and Turkish Airlines sign new codeshare agreement!

South African Airways (SAA), the national flag carrier of South Africa, and Turkish Airlines, the national flag carrier of Türkiye, have officially signed a new codeshare agreement, strengthening connectivity between South Africa, Türkiye, and key global destinations. The partnership was formalized on 04 December 2025 during a ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, held alongside the Star Alliance Chief Executive Board (CEB) meeting and attended by senior executives from both airlines.

Under the agreement, Turkish Airlines will place its “TK” code on SAA-operated flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), Windhoek, Harare, Victoria Falls, and Mauritius. In return, South African Airways will add its “SA” code to Turkish Airlines-operated flights linking Istanbul with Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Frankfurt, Paris, and London.

The partnership aims to enhance network expansion, improve travel options for passengers, and create new strategic route opportunities across Africa, Europe, and beyond. Ticket sales for the new codeshare flights will open on 01 March 2026.

South African Airways & TAAG Angola Airlines launch new codeshare agreement to boost regional & global connectivity!

South African Airways (SAA), the national carrier of South Africa, and Angola’s state-owned TAAG Angola Airlines have announced a new strategic codeshare agreement designed to strengthen regional and long-haul connectivity across Africa, Europe, and South America. Ticket sales are now open, with travel under the new partnership having commenced on 01 December 2025.
This new collaboration positions Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Luanda as major connecting hubs, enabling easier, faster, and more convenient travel for passengers across the combined networks of both airlines.

Expanded route access for seamless travel
Under the partnership, SAA will place its flight code on TAAG-operated services from Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT) to Luanda (LAD). Travellers also gain smooth onward connections from Luanda to two key intercontinental destinations:

• Lisbon, Portugal
• São Paulo, Brazil

In return, TAAG customers will enjoy access to several important points within SAA’s Southern African network, including:

• Durban (DUR)
• Gqeberha (PLZ)

Emirates and South African Airways (SAA), building on almost three decades of strong and successful partnership, are set to further enhance their relationship with a new reciprocal codeshare agreement ahead of the busy peak travel season. The expanded cooperation will strengthen connectivity for travellers, offering smoother journeys across South Africa and the wider African region.

Under the new arrangement, Emirates passengers will benefit from single-ticket itineraries and seamless baggage transfers when travelling from Johannesburg to three major domestic destinations in South Africa – Cape Town, Durban and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). The codeshare will also unlock convenient access to 13 regional destinations across Africa, including Abidjan, Accra, Dar es Salaam, Gaborone, Kinshasa, Windhoek, Lagos, Lusaka, Lubumbashi, Harare, Victoria Falls and Mauritius.
This expansion strengthens Emirates’ ability to tap into feeder traffic from South Africa and the wider region, while supporting long-haul connectivity for travellers from key markets such as the UK and the US.

SAA customers will continue to enjoy streamlined access to Dubai, supported by Emirates’ soon-to-be 56 weekly flights from three South African gateways, and onward travel to 68 international destinations available on an interline basis. Since January 2025, more than 45,000 passengers have already taken advantage of the existing partnership.

The upgraded agreement was signed at the 2025 Dubai Airshow by Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, and Professor M. John Lamola, SAA Group Chief Executive Officer. The new agreement also outlines future areas of collaboration, including loyalty programme integration, cargo operations, and opportunities to optimise schedules and network synergies.

Scandinavian Airlines expands codeshare with Virgin Atlantic to South Africa!

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), the flagship carrier of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, has officially broadened its codeshare partnership with Virgin Atlantic, giving travellers seamless access to South Africa. The expanded agreement now includes direct SAS bookings to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town, alongside existing destinations Dubai (DXB) and Malé (MLE; Maldives) for passengers connecting via Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London.
With this update, SAS places its “SK” code on selected Virgin Atlantic flights, enabling passengers to book these international routes directly through SAS’s website or travel channels. The expanded codeshare flights became available for booking on 06 October 2025, with travel commencing from 08 October 2025.

Both SAS and Virgin Atlantic are SkyTeam alliance members, offering enhanced opportunities for frequent flyer point earning and redemption across both carriers. New Southern African destinations via Airlink for Emirates and Air France passengers!

South Africa's privately-owned regional airline, Airlink, is set to strengthen its position as a key regional connector with expanded codeshare partnerships with global carriers Emirates and Air France. These enhancements will significantly improve travel options for international passengers accessing remote and regional destinations across Southern Africa.
Starting 01 August 2025, Emirates will expand its successful partnership with Airlink by placing its "EK" flight code on three additional Airlink-operated routes from Johannesburg:

• Johannesburg – Beira (Mozambique)
• Johannesburg – Livingstone (Zambia)
• Johannesburg – Ndola (Zambia)

This builds on a well-established codeshare agreement that already connects Emirates passengers to over 40 cities across Southern Africa, including key domestic destinations in South Africa as well as regional hubs in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and beyond.
The enhanced partnership allows travellers to benefit from single-ticket itineraries, seamless baggage transfers, and smoother connections between Emirates’ global network and Airlink’s Southern African footprint.

Air France is also planning to expand its codeshare agreement with Airlink, with new routes scheduled to go live from 26 October 2025. These additions will allow passengers arriving in Cape Town to connect effortlessly to sought-after safari and regional destinations, including:

• Cape Town – Hoedspruit (gateway to Kruger National Park)
• Cape Town – Skukuza (Kruger National Park)
• Cape Town – Upington (Northern Cape)
• Cape Town – Maun (Okavango Delta, Botswana)
• Cape Town – Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)

This strategic expansion follows Air France’s initial codeshare rollout with Airlink in late 2024, which connected Johannesburg and Cape Town to 14 domestic destinations in South Africa. LATAM Airlines Brasil and Airlink expand codeshare agreement!

LATAM Airlines Brasil, the Brazilian subsidiary of the LATAM Airlines Group - Latin America's largest airline - has expanded its unilateral codeshare partnership with South African regional carrier, Airlink. This enhanced agreement now includes four additional destinations for connecting flights through Johannesburg, South Africa. These new destinations are Harare (Zimbabwe), Maputo (Mozambique), Windhoek (Namibia), and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).
This extended codeshare builds on the initial agreement launched in November 2024. Under the agreement, LATAM Airlines can offer flights operated by Airlink under LATAM's flight codes, improving travel connectivity throughout South Africa. The initial codeshare covered key domestic routes within South Africa from Johannesburg, including Cape Town, Durban, Hoedspruit, and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

Earlier, in May 2023, LATAM Brasil and Airlink had introduced an interline agreement, allowing LATAM passengers to access over 40 destinations across Africa through Airlink's extensive network. This agreement facilitated smoother connections through Johannesburg, particularly after LATAM launched its São Paulo <> Johannesburg route in September 2023.

LATAM Airlines is currently the only Brazilian carrier operating direct flights to Africa. The airline runs four weekly flights between São Paulo and Johannesburg on a Boeing 787-9 aircraft, offering a 9-hour journey with a capacity of 300 passengers, divided into three classes: 30 in Premium Business, 57 in Premium Economy, and 213 in Economy.

British Airways and Airlink expand codeshare to include Botswana!

British Airways, the United Kingdom’s flag carrier, and South African regional airline Airlink have expanded their codeshare agreement to include destinations in Botswana. According to reports, the enhanced agreement has been gradually implemented since late January 2025. It now covers Airlink’s return flights between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE) in Gaborone, Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun, and Kasane International Airport (BBK) in Kasane. Additionally, from 01 April 2025, the codeshare will extend to Airlink’s new route between Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town and Gaborone.

Qantas & Airlink sign codeshare agreement!

The flag carrier of Australia, Qantas, and South African regional airline, Airlink, have signed a codeshare agreement. Qantas will add its airline code ("QF") on Airlink’s domestic network, enabling seamless connectivity between Qantas' flights to OR Tambo International Airport  (JNB) in Johannesburg and nine South African destinations, including Cape Town, Durban and Hoedspruit. The airline is planning to add additional Airlink destinations in nearby southern African countries over the coming months, pending regulatory approval. We'll keep you posted!

South Africa/Brazil: South African Airways & Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes reinstate codeshare agreement!

South African Airways (SAA) has announced that its codeshare agreement with Brazilian low-cost airline Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes ("Gol") is back in place with immediate effect. This is a renewal of the agreement between the two airlines that was suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic. The reinstated agreement includes flights between Cape Town International (CPT) in Cape Town, OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and Galeão-Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG) in Rio de Janeiro. It extends to domestic routes, connecting Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), giving Brazilian visitors seamless access to the four major economic hubs of South Africa. The agreement also makes it possible for SAA to add its designated code on more than 20 connecting Gol-operated flights in Brazil, including (but not limited to) Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte and Florianópolis.
In time, the two airlines will add 60 additional Latin American destinations and many African ones to the agreement, to give travellers optimal choice and make it easier than ever to plan multi-city itineraries on a single SAA/Gol codeshare ticket.

South African Airways and Kenya Airways expand partnership!

South Africa's national flag carrier, South African Airways (SAA), and Kenya’s national carrier, Kenya Airways, are expanding their codeshare partnership. Starting this month, customers will be able to book a seamless travel journey from Kenya Airways' network to South African Airways' South American network, all under one ticket. The strategic partnership now also includes SAA's recently reintroduced service between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governador André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU) in São Paulo (Brazil).

Lufthansa signs codeshare agreements with South African Airways and Airlink!

Germany's flag carrier airline, Lufthansa, and South Africa's national airline, South African Airways (SAA), have re-established their codeshare agreement with immediate effect.  The restored agreement applies to Lufthansa's Frankfurt <> Johannesburg service and enables SAA passengers to book connecting flights to various destinations in Europa serviced by Lufthansa and Lufthansa passengers to add connecting flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town or Durban within the same booking.
Prior to SAA's collapse into business rescue before the corona virus pandemic, the two airlines already had a codeshare.

SWISS, the flag carrier of Switzerland and a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, and South African Airways (SAA) are also planning to sign a codeshare agreement. Once approved by the authorities, passengers will similarly be able to book connecting flights to various destinations in Europa serviced by SWISS and SWISS passengers to add connecting flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town or Durban within the same booking

A codeshare agreement differs to an interline agreement because a codeshare flight is the whole flight, whereas an interline is one flight within a wider itinerary.

Angola: TAAG & GOL (Brazil) sign a codeshare agreement!

The state-owned flag carrier of Angola, TAAG Angola Airlines, and Brazilian low-cost airline GOL Linhas Aéreas have signed a codeshare agreement. Under the new agreement, which becomes effective on 17 April 2023, TAAG will add its flight code to 13 domestic destinations in Brazil served by GOL from São Paulo/Guarulhos – Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU) in São Paulo, namely Rio de Janeiro (GIG & SDU), Belo Horizonte (CNF), Recife (REC), Porto Alegre (POA), Curitiba (CWB), Salvador (SSA), Brasília (BSB), Goiánia (GYN), Florianópolis (FLN), Fortaleza (FOR), Foz do Iguaçu (IGU) and Natal (NAT). TAAG will also have the option to connect passengers to regional geographies operated by GOL on an interline basis.
In return, GOL will place its flight code on TAAG's five weekly service between Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport (LAD) in Luanda and São Paulo, with the option of marketing other TAAG destinations including Lisbon (Portugal), Madrid (Spain), Johannesburg, Cape Town (South Africa), Windhoek (Namibia) and Maputo (Mozambique).
TAAG and GOL will progressively add more destinations to the codeshare agreement.

Airlink & British Airways sign codeshare agreement!

British Airways, the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom, and South African privately-owned regional airline Airlink have signed a codeshare agreement. Under the agreement, British Airways’ customers travelling from or transiting through Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London will be able to connect to their final destination via Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town or OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg on a single ticket. In total, 18 destinations are available as codeshare options when travelling from London via Johannesburg and Cape Town. Examples include:

• Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London to Durban via Johannesburg
• Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) via Cape Town or Johannesburg
• Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London to Skukuza via Cape Town or Johannesburg
• Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London to Windhoek via Cape Town or Johannesburg
• Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London to Walvis Bay via Cape Town or Johannesburg

Codeshare tickets are now available to book for travel from 15 February 2023 onwards. Other Southern Africa destinations are pending government approval and might join the codeshare agreement at a later date.

British Airways currently flies twice daily between Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London and Johannesburg with A380 aircraft, twice daily between Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Cape Town with B777 and A350 aircraft and three times per week between Gatwick Airport (LGW) in London and Cape Town with B777 aircraft.

Angola: TAAG expands network in Europa through codeshare with Iberia!

The state-owned flag carrier of Angola, TAAG Angola Airlines, has expanded its network of destinations in Europe and domestic connections in Spain through its codeshare agreement with the flag carrier airline of Spain, Iberia. From now on, TAAG customers and passengers will be able to travel on a codeshare basis to London (United Kingdom), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Rome, Milan (Italy), Geneva, Zurich (Switzerland), Brussels (Belgium) and Porto (Portugal). Domestic destinations in Spain are also included, namely Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, Vigo, Malaga, Bilbao, Valencia and Seville.
Under the agreement between the two airlines, the Africa <> Europe route (Luanda/ Madrid/Luanda) is operated by TAAG, with the Europe <> Europe connections carried out by Iberia.
