Edelweiss Air adds third direct flight between Zürich and Windhoek for 2026

Travellers planning a trip to Namibia in 2026 will soon have even more convenient options to reach the country from Europe, as Edelweiss Air is adding an extra direct flight between Zürich and Windhoek.

The Swiss leisure airline, part of the Lufthansa Group, is expanding its non-stop service between Zürich and Windhoek from two to three weekly flights during the peak European summer travel season.

This is good news for both international visitors heading to Namibia for safari adventures and road trips, as well as Namibian travellers connecting onward into Europe.

New Edelweiss Air Zürich–Windhoek schedule

The route will be operated by the modern Airbus A350-900, offering improved comfort on the long-haul journey.

The updated schedule is:

  • From 01 June 2026: 2 weekly direct flights
  • From 15 July 2026: increased to 3 weekly direct flights

The additional frequency gives travellers more flexibility when planning longer Namibia itineraries, especially for popular self-drive holidays that include destinations such as Etosha National Park, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland, and the Skeleton Coast.

More Europe–Namibia flights overall

With the added Edelweiss Air frequency, the Lufthansa Group says it will now offer 13 weekly direct flights between Europe and Namibia through its leisure carriers, Edelweiss Air and Discover Airlines.

This strengthens Namibia's air connectivity significantly and makes the destination easier to access for European tourists, particularly from Germany, Switzerland, and neighbouring markets.

For travellers, more flights often mean:

  • better fare competition
  • improved seat availability during peak safari season
  • easier multi-country Southern Africa itineraries
  • more flexible arrival and departure planning

This is especially important during Namibia's high season from July to October, when international demand for wildlife safaris and desert road trips is at its highest.

Why this matters for Namibia travellers

Namibia remains one of Southern Africa’s top destinations for independent travellers thanks to its excellent self-drive infrastructure, dramatic desert landscapes, and world-class wildlife experiences.

Direct flights reduce travel time considerably compared with connections via Johannesburg or other African hubs, making Namibia more attractive for shorter holidays and premium safari trips.

For travellers departing from Europe, Zurich also offers strong onward connections from major cities across Germany, Austria, France, Italy, and the UK, making this route particularly useful even if Switzerland is not your starting point.

A positive sign for Southern African tourism

The increase in flights also reflects strong continued demand for Southern African leisure travel.

As more airlines expand direct long-haul services into destinations like Namibia, travellers benefit from better access and stronger tourism competition, while local tourism operators gain valuable support through increased visitor arrivals.

For anyone planning a Namibia trip in 2026, this is one more reason to start booking early—especially for peak dry-season safaris.

With more direct flights, easier access, and one of Africa’s most rewarding road trip destinations waiting, Namibia is becoming even simpler to explore.

FlyNamibia boosts Windhoek–Victoria Falls and Maun services from April 2026

FlyNamibia will significantly expand its regional network from April 2026, strengthening air connectivity between Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe and improving access to some of Southern Africa’s most sought-after safari destinations.

The airline will double its WindhoekVictoria Falls service, increasing frequencies from three to six flights per week. In addition, the WindhoekMaunKatima Mulilo route will operate four times weekly - on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Windhoek – Victoria Falls: More Access to an Iconic Destination

The enhanced service to Victoria Falls provides greater flexibility for travellers visiting one of Africa’s most iconic natural attractions, the Victoria Falls.

For leisure travellers, tour operators, and safari planners, the additional frequencies allow smoother itinerary planning, easier short-stay combinations, and improved onward connections across the region.

Strengthening the Namibia–Botswana–Zimbabwe Safari Corridor

The expanded WindhoekMaunKatima Mulilo rotation strengthens links between:

Maun serves as the aviation hub for access to the Okavango Delta, while Katima Mulilo plays a key role in connecting Namibia's Zambezi Region with northern Botswana and southern Zambia.

By increasing frequencies, FlyNamibia is reinforcing cross-border tourism flows and supporting multi-country safari itineraries - particularly popular with European and regional travellers seeking seamless air access rather than long overland transfers.

What This Means for Travellers

The route expansion delivers:

  • Greater schedule flexibility
  • Improved safari circuit connectivity
  • Enhanced weekend and short-break options
  • Stronger regional integration within the Kavango-Zambezi tourism zone

For self-drive travellers, fly-in safari guests, and regional leisure passengers alike, the additional capacity represents a practical upgrade in accessibility across Southern Africa’s premier wildlife destinations.

Namibia: Windhoek renames Feld Street in honour of Sir Seretse Khama!

The City of Windhoek has officially announced that Feld Street will be renamed in honour of Sir Seretse Khama, effective 09 October 2025. The street is located in the Ausspannplatz (Dr. António Agostinho Neto Square) area, a northern inner-city district just north of Windhoek’s central business district.

After Botswana's independence in 1966, Khama became its first president, guiding the country from poverty to stability through democratic governance, economic management, and development of its diamond industry. His leadership set the foundation for Botswana's long-term peace and prosperity.

Namibia: New sections of Dr Hage G. Geingob Freeway officially open to traffic!

The Namibian Roads Authority (RA) has confirmed that motorists can now use the newly completed sections of Phase 2A and 2B of the Dr Hage G. Geingob Freeway, formerly known as the Windhoek – Hosea Kutako International Airport Road.
The entire freeway is a 45-kilometre dual carriageway, connecting Windhoek’s Central Business District (CBD) with Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH). This makes it one of Namibia’s largest and most significant road infrastructure projects, with an estimated total cost of N$3 billion.

Key sections now open

  • Section 2B: Extends from the Dordabis Interchange to Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH). This section has been fully completed and is now open to traffic, easing access for both domestic and international travellers.
  • Section 2A: A 10-kilometre stretch between the Sam Nujoma Interchange and the Otjihase Interchange at Finkenstein has been opened. The RA has announced that the remaining portion of this section is expected to be completed by the end of September 2025.
  • Airport Roundabout: The new roundabout connecting Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) to the freeway became operational at the end of July 2025, ensuring smoother traffic flow for passengers and logistics.

Background
The freeway was renamed the Dr Hage G. Geingob Freeway in August 2024 to honour the late President Hage Geingob, who passed away earlier that year. The renaming ceremony coincided with what would have been his 83rd birthday and highlighted his legacy in promoting infrastructure as a driver of economic growth.

Construction of the freeway began in phases:

  • Phase 1 and 2 were initiated between 2016 and 2020, funded by the Namibian government.
  • Phase 3 commenced in 2022, supported by a Chinese government grant and an African Development Bank loan.

When fully completed, the freeway will:

  • Reduce travel time between Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) from around 45 minutes to just 25 minutes.
  • Improve regional integration by linking Windhoek to the Trans-Kalahari Corridor, enhancing trade with South Africa and Botswana.
  • Support tourism by providing faster and safer access for international visitors arriving at Namibia’s main airport.

Economic Impact
The N$3 billion investment reflects Namibia’s commitment to modernizing its transport infrastructure. According to the RA, no cost overruns have been reported, and the project is progressing within its planned budget. Once fully operational, the freeway will not only benefit travellers but also strengthen Namibia’s role as a logistics hub in southern Africa.

Namibia: Renovation updates for Windhoek’s oldest building! [update #3]

update (07 October 2025): The Alte Feste restoration is structured around two main phases, with a general timeline guiding works into 2026. The current plan, as outlined by the project’s official communication and supporting organizations, is as follows:

  • Phase One: Structural Stabilisation & Initial Renovations (2025)
    • This phase focuses on urgently stabilizing the building, addressing structural issues, roof repairs, and securing the site for further development.
    • Began mid-2025 and is currently underway, with works including masonry reinforcement, roofing, and preparatory groundwork.
  • Phase Two: Complete Renovation & Repurposing (Late 2025–2026)
    • Scheduled to begin after completion of the initial stabilisation, this phase will overhaul the interior and exterior, install new utilities, and prepare purpose-built spaces for museums, galleries, and public areas.
    • Tasks in this stage include exhibition fit-out, renovation of courtyards, and development of cultural and artisan spaces.
    • This comprehensive redevelopment is expected to extend through much of 2026, with targeted public reopening set for late 2026.

update (16 April 2025): RMB Namibia, through the FirstRand Foundation, has contributed N$650,000 for phase one of its renovations, which include essential structural improvements and preparations for the museum and cultural centre.

update (14 February 2025): The German Embassy in Windhoek just posted on Facebook that Namibia Art, Craft and Design (Craft Centre) will receive 3.2 million Namibian Dollar (160 000 EURO) for 2025-2026 through the Federal Foreign Office’s Cultural Preservation Programme in order to support the extensive repair and rehabilitation work on the Alte Feste building in Windhoek.

The project to restore Windhoek’s oldest surviving building, the Alte Feste, has received a major boost! According to a statement by the German Embassy in Windhoek, the German Government will contribute N$3.2 million towards the renovation. This funding will support extensive repairs and rehabilitation, ensuring the historic site is transformed into a national genocide museum and a center of excellence for arts, crafts, and heritage.
The Alte Feste restoration is a collaborative effort between the Namibian Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture and the Namibia Craft Centre, with additional contributions from the United States Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation, the FirstRand Foundation, and the Namibian government. Renovation work is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025. Stay tuned for more updates!

Located on Robert Mugabe Avenue in Windhoek, next to the Independence Memorial Museum, the Alte Feste has a long and rich history. The fortress was founded on 18 October 1890, completed by 1893, and later expanded after 1901. It served as a barracks and a refuge for women and children during the 1904 Herero War. During World War I, it was used as headquarters for the German Schutztruppe, and later, from 1915 onwards, for South African troops. From 1925, the building housed a hostel and classrooms for Windhoek High School. Declared a National Monument in 1957, the Alte Feste became home to the historical section of the National Museum in 1962. However, the site has been closed for renovations since 2014.
