Condor adds 4th weekly Frankfurt–Johannesburg flight from May 2026

Good news for travellers heading to South Africa: Gerrman airline Condor is expanding its long-haul offering by increasing flights between Frankfurt and Johannesburg to four times per week from May 2026.

This additional frequency strengthens connectivity between Europe and Southern Africa just ahead of the peak safari and winter travel season in the region.

What’s changing?

  • Route: Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt – OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg
  • New frequency: 4× weekly (up from 3× weekly)
  • Effective: From mid-May 2026

While Condor has not published a fixed weekday pattern across all channels yet, booking systems confirm the additional rotation is active from May 2026 onwards.

Flight schedule overview

Travellers can expect a familiar and convenient overnight schedule:

Frankfurt > Johannesburg

  • Evening departure (approx. 20:00–22:00)
  • Arrival the following morning

Johannesburg > Frankfurt

  • Evening departure (approx. 20:00–21:00)
  • Arrival early morning in Germany
  • Flight duration: ~11 hours
  • Aircraft: Typically Airbus A330-900neo (Condor’s modern long-haul fleet)

Is Namibia safe to visit? Government responds to Canada and Germany travel advisories!

According to the global, multilingual travel media platform Travel and Tour World (TTW), both Canada and Germany have recently issued updated travel advisories for Namibia. In response, Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security - working in consultation with the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation - released an official statement to reassure the international community. The statement emphasizes that Namibia remains a peaceful destination, characterised by good governance, functioning state institutions, and a strong commitment to the rule of law.

Condor extends Frankfurt–Cape Town flights into May 2026: Perfect for spring holidays in South Africa!

German leisure airline Condor is set to extend its seasonal flights from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town, offering travellers more opportunities to experience South Africa’s iconic landscapes and vibrant city life. Initially scheduled to end in April 2026, the flights will now continue from 02 May 2026 until 22 May 2026, giving holidaymakers extra flexibility for late-spring travel.
During this extended season, Condor will operate three weekly flights between Germany and South Africa. Flight DE2290 departs Frankfurt on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, while the return service, Flight DE2291, leaves Cape Town on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. This schedule makes it easier for travellers to plan both short city breaks and longer adventures in and around Cape Town, including the Cape Winelands, Table Mountain, and the Cape Peninsula.

Munich > Johannesburg: Three weekly nonstop flights

Lufthansa continues its popular nonstop route from Munich to Johannesburg, operating three flights per week on the Airbus A350-900. Passengers benefit from fuel-efficient travel, lie-flat Business Class seats, and state-of-the-art inflight entertainment on the 10.5-hour journey. 

Frankfurt > Cape Town: Expanded weekly service
From Frankfurt, Lufthansa increases Cape Town flights from three to five weekly departures for Summer 2026. The modern widebody aircraft provide comfort, flexibility, and world-class service, while multiple departure days make planning easier for travellers.

Zurich > Windhoek: Edelweiss Air introduces twice-weekly route

In addition, Edelweiss Air will increase its winter 2025/26 frequencies on the Zurich > Cape Town route from four to five flights per week, ensuring smoother connectivity and more travel options between Europe and Cape Town

Condor set to increase seasonal flights to South Africa!

German leisure airline Condor is set to expand its seasonal long-haul operations for the 2025/2026 European winter season with increased flights to South Africa. Starting 01 November 2025, the airline will offer daily return flights between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town, up from the previous five weekly services. Additionally, flights between Frankfurt and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg will increase from two to three times per week. Both routes will be operated by Condor's Airbus A330-900neo, which accommodates 310 passengers, including 30 in business class, 64 in premium economy, and 216 in economy.

Lufthansa resumes its seasonal Munich <> Cape Town flights!

German flag carrier Lufthansa is set to resume its seasonal service between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town, South Africa. Effective 26 October 2024, the airline will operate daily return flights to the Mother City. In the previous year, Lufthansa offered five weekly rotations between the two destinations. The seasonal service will be operated until the end of March 2024.

Germany: Discover Airlines launches a new service to Namibia!

German leisure airline Discover Airlines, owned by the Lufthansa Group, is set to launch a new service to Namibia. The airline will introduce a new year-round service between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich, Germany, and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek next year. Namibia's capital will be served three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Flights will commence on 01 April 2025. Discover Airlines' new service will be the only direct connection between Munich and Windhoek.

Germany: Lufthansa to launch a new nonstop service to South Africa! [udpate]

update (03 September 2024): Lufthana has introduced operations between Munich and Johannesburg today (03 September 2024). The new service was initially scheduled to commence on 03 June 2024, but Lufthansa moved the start date to September 2024 to accommodate the other new routes it launched this year.

German flag carrier, Lufthansa, is set to launch a new nonstop service to South Africa. The airline, which already operates return flights from Frankfurt to Johannesburg and from Frankfurt to Cape Town, will commence operations from Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich to OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg from 03 June 2024. Lufthansa will fly three times weekly between the two destinations on board an Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The last scheduled Lufthansa service from Munich to Johannesburg took place in 2005.

Germany: Eurowings Discover discontinues flights to Kruger National Park!

According to German aviation specialits aerotelegraph, Eurowings Discover is set to discontinue flights between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, and Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport (KMIA; MQP) in Mbombela (Nelspruit) in Mpumalanga, South Africa, from 26 March 2023 due to low demand. The airport is the major gateway for tourists traveling to Kruger National Park. Eurowings Discover launched the service in November 2022 and announced plans to make the offering a year-round service in August 2022. The airline was the first intercontinental airline ever to start scheduled operations to Kruger National Park.
Eurowings Discover will be increasing its weekly flights from Frankfurt to Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in the Namibian capital Windhoek to ten flights in the 2023 (European) summer flight schedule. Travellers can also look forward to up to three weekly direct flights from Frankfurt to Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

Namibia: Windhoek becomes Eurowing Discover's most frequently served destination! [update]

update (06 June 2022): Discover will increase the number of flights between Frankfurt and Windhoek to a total of ten weekly frequencies from 01 July 2022 to 06 November 2022. From then on, the airline will still offer seven weekly flights between the two destinations.

German leisure carrier Eurowings Discover, owned and operated by the Lufthansa Group, has announced that Windhoek in Namibia is set to become the most frequently served destination in its flight schedule. From 27 March 2022, the airline will increase its offer from five to seven weekly flights between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek, operated as year-round service. The program will then be further expanded to a total of ten weekly flights during northern summer peak season, lasting from 02 July 2022 to 11 September 2022. The flights depart Windhoek every day in the early evening. The three additional services during summer are scheduled on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, departing the Namibian capital early in the morning.
From end of March 2022 to mid-November 2022, three weekly services will be
operated as tag legs with onward flights to Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The route is offered on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays with a short stopover in Windhoek. The regulatory approval has been granted to Eurowings Discover to also make their flights available for travellers from Namibia to fly to Victoria Falls from mid-April 2022.

Germany: Condor resumes flights to South Africa! [update #2]

update (07 October 2022): Condor is operating flights between Frankfurt and Cape Town during the South African Summer season from 04 October 2022 to 23 April 2023, with two flights per week for the first month of operation, thereafter, increasing to three times per week from November 2022.

update (25 March 2022): Condor is set to restart direct flights between Frankfurt and Cape Town on 04 October 2022. Direct flights to Johannesburg will commence on 04 November 2022.

German charter airline Condor is set to launch a seasonal nonstop service to a new destination in South Africa during the winter 2022/23 season. Effective 01 November 2022, the airline will operate two weekly flights on Mondays and Fridays between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg. Condor will also restart its service between Frankfurt and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town with  three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 01 November 2022. The service to Cape Town was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Germany: Eurowings Discover to launch flights between Frankfurt <> Kruger National Park! [update]

update (05 August 2022): Lufthansa has announced that Eurowings Discover will turn its new Frankfurt <> Kruger National Park route into a year-round service for 2023.

German airline Eurowings Discover will be the first intercontinental airline ever to start scheduled operations to South Africa's Kruger National Park. In its first season, between 15 November 2022 and 25 March 2023, the airline will fly three times a week from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, to Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport (KMIA; MQP), with a short stopover at Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Namibia's capital Windhoek. Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport (KMIA; MQP) is located 27 km north east of Mbombela (Nelspruit), the  major stopover point for tourists traveling to Kruger National Park.

Eurowings Discover is the Lufthansa Group's new leisure airline that flies travellers from the Frankfurt hub – and from summer 2022 also from Munich – to the most beautiful local and long-distance destinations in the world.

New Covid-19 variant: Germany bans most travel from South Africa! [update]

update (30 December 2021): Effective 04 January 2021, Germany no longer classifies South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique, Eswatini and Malawi as areas of variants of concern.

update (27 November 2021): The German Government now also categorizes Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini and Malawi as "virus variant areas". This becomes effective at midnight on 28 November 2021.

Germany's acting Health Minister Jens Spahn today (26 November 2021) announced that South Africa will be declared a virus variant area by the German Government. This is due to the detection of a new Covid-19 variant, B.1.1.529, in South Africa, which has a "very unusual constellation" of mutations. The decision, which will come into effect from tonight, will mean airlines will be allowed to fly only Germans to Germany from South Africa, according to the acting Health Minister. Returning Germans, even those who are vaccinated, will then have to spend 14 days in quarantine. Other neighbouring countries of South Africa, such as Namibia, Botswana or Zimbabwe, might also be categorized as virus variant areas. We'll keep you posted!

Lufthansa Group to increase flights to South Africa!

The Lufthansa Group is set to increase services between Germany, Switzerland and South Africa. Germany's flag carrier, Lufthansa, is set to resume its seasonal service between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town. Effective 31 October 2021, the arline will initially operate three weekly flights between the two destinations on board an Airbus A350-900. At the end of November 2021, Lufthansa will increase the frequency of flights to five weekly operations.
From 01 November 2021, Lufthansa will resume daily flights between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg.
Also from 01 November 2021, the flag carrier of Switzerland, SWISS, will resume daily fligths between Zürich Airport (ZRH) in Zürich and Johannesburg.
Swiss leisure airline Edelweiss Air has already resumed its seasonal two-weekly service between Zürich and Cape Town. The service will end at the last weekend in March 2022.

Lufthansa Group to increase flights to South Africa!

Following the recategorizing of South Africa as a Covid-19 high risk country from 01 August 2021 by the German Government and the easing of travel restrictions, the Lufthansa Group has revised its schedules by increasing the number flights to South Africa. Effective from 24 August 2021, Lufthansa will increase capacity between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg to five weekly flights. Additionally, the airline will increase flights between Frankfurt and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town to three weekly flights. SWISS will also increase return flights to Cape Town from Zurich Airport (ZRH) in Zürich, Switzerland.

Lufthansa Group's brand new airline "Eurowings Discover" now connects Frankfurt <> Windhoek!

Eurowings Discover, Lufthansa Group's news leisure airline, has begun operations in Windhoek, Namibia. The airline touched down at Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) for the very first time this morning (11 August 2021). Flight 4Y132 departed from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, on 10 August 2021 and arrived in Windhoek at 08:05. Eurowings Discover is the only European airline currently offering direct flights to Namibia.
Eurowings Discover operates five weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between Frankfurt and Windhoek in 2021. From March 2022, the airline will increase its service to daily flights with three weekly onward tag flights to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Covid-19: The Lufthansa Group temporarily reduces flights between Frankfurt <> Windhoek! [update]

update (31 July 2021): Germany's Robert Koch Institut (RKI) will with effect from 01 August 2021 downgrade Namibia and South Africa from being classified as Covid-19 virus variant areas to areas of high risk. According to Dr. Andrè Schulz, General Manager of the Lufthansa Group in Southern & East Africa, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group will - based on the new regulations that are coming with the downgrade - continuously re-evaluate and adjust capacities to meet the demand according to customer needs.

The Lufthansa Group has adapted its schedule for flights between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Namibia's capital Windhoek. As a result of Namibia being classified a Covid-19 variant area of concern by Germany's Robert Koch Institut (RKI), the Lufthansa Group has reduced its flight schedule from five flights per week between Frankfurt and Windhoek to three weekly flights between the two cities. The reduction became effective from 13 July 2021. Along with these changes, due to operational reasons the airline has also adapted the departure schedule from Windhoek. Effective 15 July 2021, all flights departing from Windhoek will incur a 12hrs:15min delay. There will be no time change for departures from Frankfurt.

For those passengers holding confirmed tickets on these flights which are affected by the schedule changes, the Lufthansa Group will offer a rebooking at no additional charge.

Germany: Condor delays the resumption of flights to Namibia until 2022! [update]

update (30 June 2021): Condor has released its summer flight schedule 2022. Flights to the long-haul destinations in the airline's flight schedule for summer 2022 (01 May - 31 October 2022) are bookable now. Condor will operate two weekly flights between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek, Namibia, on Mondays and Thursdays.

German charter airline Condor just confirmed that it has postponed the resumption of flights to Namibia. The airline initially planned to restart flights between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt, Germany, and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek, Namibia, in May 2021. Condor than moved the launch date to end of June 2021. According to the airline, the service between Frankfurt and Windhoek has now been delayed until May 2022. We'll keep you posted.

Germany: Eurowings Discover to launch flights between Frankfurt <> Victoria Falls!

Lufthansa Group's leisure airline Eurowings Discover is set to launch a new service to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Effective 30 March 2022, the airline will operate three weekly flights on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt and Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) in Victoria Falls via Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek, Namibia. Also from 30 March 2022, Eurowings Discover will increase its operations between Frankfurt and Windhoek from five weekly flights to a daily schedule.

Lufthansa temporarily reduces flights between Frankfurt <> Cape Town!

Due to operational reasons, Lufthansa is temporarily changing its Frankfurt <> Cape Town schedule. According to a media release, the airline has reduced the number of flights between Frankfurt and Cape Town from three weekly flights to two weekly flights between 19 May 2021 and 30 June 2021. Flight LH576 departs Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Frankfurt at 22:15 on Wednesdays and Fridays and arrives at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town at 10:00 the following day. The return flight LH577 departs Cape Town at 17:45 on Thursdays and Saturdays and arrives in Frankfurt at 05:40 the following day.
