Velvet Sky adds more flights over festive season

South Africa's latest budget airline, Velvet Sky,  has added an additional 22 flights ahead of this year's festive season.

On peak days, such as the following, Velvet Sky added several flights:

• 22 Dec 2011 - three additional flights Cape Town <> Durban
• 23 Dec 2011 - three additional flights Cape Town <> Johannesburg
• 23 Dec 2011 - three additional flights Cape Town <> Durban
• 27 Dec 2011 - six extra flights spread across Cape Town, Durban & Johannesburg routes

Velvet Sky to increase flight schedule

South Africa's latest budget airline, Velvet Sky, will increase its flight schedule for the summer season. From 04 November 2011 the airline will be offering additional flights on the Johannesburg <> Durban, Cape Town <> Johannesburg, Cape Town <> Durban, Cape Town <> Port Elizabeth, Durban <> Port Elizabeth routes.
Even more flights will be added on 05 November 2011 (Johannesburg > Durban, Johannesburg <> Cape Town), on 06 November 2011 (Cape Town <> Durban, Cape Town <> Port Elizabeth, Durban <> Port Elizabeth), on 02 December 2011 (Johannesburg <> Cape Town, Cape Town <> Durban, Cape Town <> Port Elizabeth, Port Elizabeth > Durban), on 06 December 2011 (Durban > Port Elizabeth) and on 09 December (Johannesburg <> Cape Town).

Velvet Sky to launch Johannesburg <> Polokwane service

South Africa's newest low-cost domestic airline, Velvet Sky, will launch a twice-daily Johannesburg <> Polokwane service from 30 September 2011.
The morning flight will depart from Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport 07:30am (arrival time in Plokwane 08:25am) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The return flight from Polokwane will depart at 09:05am (arrival time at OR Tambo International Airport 10:00am).
The evening flight will depart from Johannesburg at 17:20pm (arrival time in Plokwane 18:10pm) on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The return service will depart Polokwane at 18:35pm (arrival time at OR Tambo International Airport 19:25pm).

South Africa: New planes for Velvet Sky

South Africa's newest low-cost domestic airline, Velvet Sky, will add two Boeing B737-300 to its fleet to accommodate the increasing demand for its service on its two routes between Cape Town and Johannesburg, and Johannesburg and Durban.
The new aircraft will take to the skies at the end of August 2011.Velvet Sky has also added a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 aircraft from Global Aviation, which operates since 05 Aug 2011. Once the Boeings are operating, the DC-9 will service new routes, which are expected to open soon.

Velvet Sky increases frequencies

South Africa's latest budget airline Velvet Sky will increase frequencies on its existing routes from August 2011. With the introduction of a second Boeing 737 aircraft to its fleet the airline will be able to expand operations on its existing Johannesburg <> Cape Town and Johannesburg <> Durban routes.
Velvet Sky saw its inaugural flight take off from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Durban on 22 March 2011. The airline is currently operating a Boeing 737, which it sourced from international aircraft leasing company Aergo.

Velvet Sky to get three more planes within the next 12 month

Excalibur Aerospace (Pty) Ltd, a service provider to the aviation industry, just bought the majority stake of South Africa's latest low-cost airline airline Velvet Sky from steel and engineering group Macdonald Holdings for an undisclosed amount.
Macdonald Holdings chairperson Cecil Reddy was quoted saying that "Excalibur Aerospace will no doubt continue to grow the business through their service-oriented approach, expansion plans into Africa and commitment to providing affordable air travel to South African commuters".

Excalibur is now planning to introduce three additional aircraft to the Velvet Sky fleet within the next 12 months,  with the first being introduced by mid-August 2011.

update (05 April 2011): Velvet Sky to introduce flights between Cape Town and its home airport of Durban in June 2011. 

South Africa's new budget airline Velvet Sky, a subsidiary of South African steel company Macdonald Holdings, will start operating next week. Tickets will go on sale from the flyvelvetsky.com website from midday on 18 March 2011.
The airline’s inaugural flight will take off from OR Tambo on the Johannesburg to Durban route on Tuesday, 22 March 2011.



Velvet Sky is based at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport and will fly Boeing 737-300s (one now, two more in May & June 2011).
The airline will fly seven daily flights between King Shaka International Airport (Durban), Oliver Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) and Cape Town International Airport.
