More Flights to Namibia: Discover Airlines expands Munich-Windhoek route

Travelling between Europe and Namibia will become even easier from April 2027.

Discover Airlines has announced that it will increase its direct flights between Munich and Windhoek from three to five weekly services. The Lufthansa Group leisure carrier will add new Monday and Thursday departures, offering travellers greater flexibility when planning holidays, self-drive adventures and safari itineraries in Namibia.

The route was only launched in April 2025 as Munich's first-ever direct connection to Namibia. Demand has clearly exceeded expectations, with Discover Airlines now committing to a year-round expansion of the service.

For Namibian tourism, the additional flights are good news. Germany remains one of Namibia's most important international source markets and improved air connectivity makes it easier for European visitors to reach the country without routing via Frankfurt, Johannesburg or other hubs.

The expansion will also strengthen Lufthansa Group's position in the Namibia market. From April 2027, the group will offer a combined 12 weekly flights to Windhoek from Frankfurt and Munich, providing travellers with more choice and convenient onward connections from across Europe and North America.

Together with Edelweiss Air's new nonstop service between Zurich and Windhoek that's 15 frequencies a week on widebody aircraft to Namibia from Europe and from the Lufthansa Group. 

For visitors planning a self-drive holiday, the increased frequency opens up more flexible itinerary options and could help improve seat availability during peak travel periods.

With demand for Namibia continuing to grow, the additional Munich flights are another vote of confidence in the country's appeal as one of Africa's leading adventure and wildlife destinations.

Lufthansa resumes its seasonal Munich <> Cape Town flights!

German flag carrier Lufthansa is set to resume its seasonal service between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town, South Africa. Effective 26 October 2024, the airline will operate daily return flights to the Mother City. In the previous year, Lufthansa offered five weekly rotations between the two destinations. The seasonal service will be operated until the end of March 2024.
Lufthansa’s new Allegris First and Business Class cabins will be available on flights between Munich  and Cape Town.

Germany: Discover Airlines launches a new service to Namibia!

German leisure airline Discover Airlines, owned by the Lufthansa Group, is set to launch a new service to Namibia. The airline will introduce a new year-round service between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich, Germany, and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek next year. Namibia's capital will be served three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Flights will commence on 01 April 2025. Discover Airlines' new service will be the only direct connection between Munich and Windhoek.

Germany: Lufthansa to launch a new nonstop service to South Africa! [udpate]

update (03 September 2024): Lufthana has introduced operations between Munich and Johannesburg today (03 September 2024). The new service was initially scheduled to commence on 03 June 2024, but Lufthansa moved the start date to September 2024 to accommodate the other new routes it launched this year.

German flag carrier, Lufthansa, is set to launch a new nonstop service to South Africa. The airline, which already operates return flights from Frankfurt to Johannesburg and from Frankfurt to Cape Town, will commence operations from Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich to OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg from 03 June 2024. Lufthansa will fly three times weekly between the two destinations on board an Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The last scheduled Lufthansa service from Munich to Johannesburg took place in 2005.

South African Airways temporarily cancels selected domestic flights & international service to Munich!

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways (SAA), has canceled selected domestic flights between Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT) as well as between Johannesburg (JNB) and Durban (DBN). In addition, the airline has also canceled selected services beween Johannesburg (JNB) and Munich (MUC) in Germany and will be reviewing further possible flight schedule amendments over the coming days. According to a media release by South African Airways (SAA), the cancellations are in line with SAA's usual policy of reviewing flights and consolidating services with low demand. Furthermore, during the current process of business rescue, these cancellations represent a responsible strategy to conserve cash and optimise the airline's position ahead of any further capital investment.

South African Airways (SAA) is working closely with its sister airline Mango to re-accommodate passengers on alternative domestic services operated by both airlines to minimise disruption. Passengers booked on flights between Johannesburg (JNB) and Munich (MUC) will get re-accommodated on SAA's services between Johannesburg (JNB) and Frankfurt (FRA) as well as London Heathrow (LHR). Some passengers travelling to Munich (MUC), and others travelling via Munich (MUC) to other destinations, will be re-accommodated for some of their journey on partner airlines in the Star Alliance to minimise delays.

Eurowings has launched a new service between Munich <> Windhoek!

German carrier Eurowings, a fully owned subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, has launched a new service between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek on 07 May 2018. The airline initially operates one weekly return flight to Namibia's capital on Mondays/Tuesdays and might increase the frequency to two weekly flights in the near future (July 2018?).

Eurowings to suspend flights between Munich <> Cape Town!

German carrier Eurowings, a fully owned subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, will not only suspend its service between Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town, but also between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich and Cape Town. The airline will terminate the service in October 2018. According to a Eurowings spokesperson, the arline will resume flights to Cape Town in the future, but has no immediate plans.

Eurowings to suspend flights between Cologne <> Windhoek!

German carrier Eurowings just confirmed on twitter (also see this tweet) that the airline will suspend its service between Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN), which serves the cities of Cologne and Bonn in Western Germany, and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek at the end of October 2018. The airline will instead launch flights between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich and Windhoek on 07 May 2018.

Condor launched seasonal non-stop service between Munich <> Windhoek!

German airline Condor has started its new non-stop service from Munich (MUC) to the Namibian capital Windhoek (WDH) on 06 July 2016. During the summer schedule of 2016 (until 26 Oct 2016), the airline will operate one weekly flight on Wednesdays (return flight on Thursdays) between the two destinations. Apart from the new flight from Munich Condor also offers non-stop flight connections every Monday and Friday from Frankfurt (FRA) to Windhoek.

Lufthansa: Seasonal daily flights between Munich <> Cape Town!

Europe's largest airline, German airline Lufthansa, has announced that it will increase its flights between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town from five non-stop weekly flights to a daily schedule. The service is valid from 25 October 2015 until 27 March 2016. The airline will operate an Boeing A340-600 between the two destinations.
Switzerland's leading leisure travel airline Edelweiss Air, owned by the Lufthansa Group, will for the fifth year running connect Cape Town's Cape Town International Airport (CPT) with Zurich Airport (ZRH) in Zurich non-stop twice a week during South Africa's high season (October 2015 until mid May 2016).

Germany: Condor to launch new flights to Namibia, Kenya & Tanzania!

German airline Condor (Condor Flugdienst) is set to introduce flights between Munich Airport (MUC) in Munich (Germany) and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek (Namibia), Munich and Moi International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa (Kenya) and between Munich and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) on the island of Zanzibar (Tanzania) with the beginning of the (northern) summmer season 2016. Condor will operate one flight per week between Munich and the three new destinations in Africa.

Ethiopian Airlines to launch flights to Munich (Germany)

update (24 July 2013): According to aviation specialists airlineroute.net, Ethiopian Airlines has canceled its planned service from Addis Ababa to Munich and then onwards to Stockholm in Sweden and from Stockholmstraight back to Addis Ababa. The airline will instead operate Addis Ababa <> Stockholm on a nonstop basis in both direction.

Ethiopia's flag carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, will launch a daily service to Munich in Germany. From 01 December 2013 the airline will operate flights from Addis Ababa to Munich and then onwards to Stockholm in Sweden before returning back to Ethiopia via Munich.
Ethiopian Airlines will discountinue its frequencies to Brussels in Belgium. From 01 December 2013 the existing Addis Ababa – Paris (Charles de Gaulle Airport) – Brussels service will change to Addis Ababa – Paris (Charles de Gaulle Airport).

Condor to launch direct flights from Munich (Germany) and Vienna (Austria) to Mombasa

update (08 Nov 2013): Condor launched its seasonal Mombasa service on 05 November 2013. The airline operates its flights to Kenya from Munich via Vienna (Austria) to Mombasa. 

German airline Condor (Condor Flugdienst) announced that it will launch direct flights from Munich (Germany) and Vienna (Austria) to Mombasa in Kenya during the upcoming (Northern) winter season 2013/14. The airline will operate one return flight per week between Germany's second largest airport in Munich and Mombasa from 24 December 2013 and one weekly return flight from Austria's capital Vienna to Mombasa from 25 December 2013.
Condor is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Thomas Cook, one of the world’s largest tour operators. The airline is currently flying over six million passengers to around 75 destinations in Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

Lufthansa: Cape Town flights to depart from Munich

Due to the recently introduced night flight ban in Frankfurt, Germany's flag carrier, Lufthansa, moved its seasonal connection to South Africa from Frankfurt to Munich. From 28 October 2012, Lufthansa passengers will therefore for the first time be able to reach the South African coastal city of Cape Town nonstop from Munich.
Lufthansa will be operating five flights per week with an Airbus A340-300 between the two destinations. The 221-seat aircraft will be configured with eight seats in first class, 48 in business class and 165 economy-class seats.
Passengers who are already booked on a Frankfurt <>  Cape Town flight will be rebooked at no charge and informed accordingly in the next few days. The departure times from Munich will change only slightly compared to those from Frankfurt.
Lufthansa will operate its flights to Cape Town on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturday and Sundays, departing Munich at 22:00, arriving in South Africa at 10:35.
The return service will depart Cape Town at 19:00, arriving in Munich at 05:35 the following day.
