TAAG Angola Airlines and LATAM Brasil codeshare expands travel options to Southern Africa

Travellers flying between Brazil and Southern Africa now have another option to consider, following a new codeshare agreement between TAAG Angola Airlines from Angola and Brazilian airline LATAM Brasil.

The partnership connects LATAM Brasil's domestic network with TAAG flights via São Paulo/Guarulhos (GRU). It covers 57 Brazilian destinations, including Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, Florianópolis and Foz do Iguaçu.

For travellers, the main advantage is the ability to book combined LATAM Brasil and TAAG itineraries, making it easier to travel from cities across Brazil towards Southern Africa via São Paulo and Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (NBJ) near Luanda or OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg.

Eligible connecting itineraries also offer benefits such as coordinated check-in, baggage handling and passenger assistance during connections. The combined tickets are already being offered through TAAG's sales channels.

An alternative route to Southern Africa

The agreement could be particularly useful for Brazilian travellers heading to Angola, Namibia, South Africa and potentially other Southern African destinations. Johannesburg, in particular, provides extensive onward connections across the region.

TAAG and LATAM have also indicated that the partnership could eventually be expanded to include LATAM's international network in South and North America, potentially creating even more routing options between the two continents.

For now, travellers planning a Brazil–Southern Africa trip should compare the new TAAG/LATAM options with existing routes, particularly when looking for a convenient single-ticket itinerary.

Flying from South Africa to Doha: What Airlink’s Qatar Airways partnership means for travellers

Airlink is expanding its partnership with Qatar Airways, giving travellers in South Africa a new way to book flights to Doha and onward destinations from 31 August 2026.

Under the expanded codeshare agreement, Airlink will place its 4Z flight code on Qatar Airways-operated services to Doha. The initial routes are:

• Johannesburg – Doha: twice daily
• Cape Town – Doha: 10 flights per week
• Durban – Doha: daily, via Maputo

The flights are operated by Qatar Airways using Airbus A350 aircraft.

For travellers, the main benefit is access to Qatar Airways' extensive international network via Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha. This creates additional options for connecting from South Africa to destinations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and beyond.

The partnership is an extension of the existing relationship between the two airlines. Qatar Airways already codeshares on Airlink's domestic and regional flights, while Qatar Airways acquired a 25% stake in Airlink in 2024.

Airlink and Qatar Airways also have a frequent-flyer partnership. Eligible Airlink Skybucks members can earn and redeem Skybucks, while Qatar Airways Privilege Club members can earn and redeem Avios on eligible flights operated by either airline.

More Qatar Airways destinations are expected to be added to the Airlink codeshare in the coming months.

The codeshare flights are available for travel from 31 August 2026 through Airlink's booking channels.

For travellers, the expansion is worth checking when comparing international flights from South Africa, particularly if Doha offers a convenient connection to your final destination.

New Southern African destinations via Airlink for Emirates and Air France passengers!

South Africa's privately-owned regional airline, Airlink, is set to strengthen its position as a key regional connector with expanded codeshare partnerships with global carriers Emirates and Air France. These enhancements will significantly improve travel options for international passengers accessing remote and regional destinations across Southern Africa.
Starting 01 August 2025, Emirates will expand its successful partnership with Airlink by placing its "EK" flight code on three additional Airlink-operated routes from Johannesburg:

• Johannesburg – Beira (Mozambique)
• Johannesburg – Livingstone (Zambia)
• Johannesburg – Ndola (Zambia)

This builds on a well-established codeshare agreement that already connects Emirates passengers to over 40 cities across Southern Africa, including key domestic destinations in South Africa as well as regional hubs in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and beyond.
The enhanced partnership allows travellers to benefit from single-ticket itineraries, seamless baggage transfers, and smoother connections between Emirates’ global network and Airlink’s Southern African footprint.

Air France is also planning to expand its codeshare agreement with Airlink, with new routes scheduled to go live from 26 October 2025. These additions will allow passengers arriving in Cape Town to connect effortlessly to sought-after safari and regional destinations, including:

• Cape Town – Hoedspruit (gateway to Kruger National Park)
• Cape Town – Skukuza (Kruger National Park)
• Cape Town – Upington (Northern Cape)
• Cape Town – Maun (Okavango Delta, Botswana)
• Cape Town – Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)

This strategic expansion follows Air France’s initial codeshare rollout with Airlink in late 2024, which connected Johannesburg and Cape Town to 14 domestic destinations in South Africa. Travellers on eligible codeshare flights can also earn Flying Blue miles, further enhancing the value of the partnership.

Angola: TAAG expands network in Europa through codeshare with Iberia!

The state-owned flag carrier of Angola, TAAG Angola Airlines, has expanded its network of destinations in Europe and domestic connections in Spain through its codeshare agreement with the flag carrier airline of Spain, Iberia. From now on, TAAG customers and passengers will be able to travel on a codeshare basis to London (United Kingdom), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Rome, Milan (Italy), Geneva, Zurich (Switzerland), Brussels (Belgium) and Porto (Portugal). Domestic destinations in Spain are also included, namely Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, Vigo, Malaga, Bilbao, Valencia and Seville.
Under the agreement between the two airlines, the Africa <> Europe route (Luanda/ Madrid/Luanda) is operated by TAAG, with the Europe <> Europe connections carried out by Iberia.

South African Airways and Scandinavian Airlines have terminated their codeshare agreement!

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways (SAA), and the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), have terminated their codeshare agreement with effect from 10 December 2020. South African Airways is providing assistance only to ticketed passengers holding a South African Airways' ticket in case the ticket was issued on/before 10 December 2020. Customers holding such ticket will be offered the value of the unused sectors (coupons) as a credit for future travel. The credit can be used within the next 24 months from 10 December 2020. The reissued/reroute request and all travel must be completed on/before 10 December 2022. Refunds are not be applicable.

Kenya: Kenya Airways and Safarilink have signed a one-way codeshare agreement!

Kenya's flag carrier, Kenya Airways, and Safarilink, a Kenyan regional airline based based at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, have signed a one-way codeshare agreement. The agreement allows passengers of Kenya Airways to combine their travel experience between respective international destinations and 18 destinations that Safarilink operates within Kenya and to Tanzania. The partnership will see Kenya Airways place its codeshare flight numbers on the Safarilink flights so that when customers from international destinations book online, they are able to book with connectivity to all Safarilink destinations.

South African Airways expands codeshare with Air Seychelles to New York!

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways, and the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles, Air Seychelles, have expanded their codeshare agreement to cover flights to New York effective 01 November 2019. Under the agreement, Air Seychelles will place its "HM" code on South African Airways daily services between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, providing travellers seamless connection on flights to and from the Seychelles. The codeshare agreement between the two airlines has been in existence since 2013.

Delta Air Lines & Kenya Airways to expand their codeshare agreement!

American airline Delta Air Lines and Kenya's flag carrier, Kenya Airways, are set to expand their codeshare partnership in Southern Africa and East Africa by four additional routes via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. Effective 01 September 2019, Delta Air Lines will place its code (DL) on return flights operated by Kenya Airways to Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Entebbe International Airport (EBB) in Entebbe (Uganda), Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka (Zambia) and Maputo International Airport (MPM) in Maputo (Mozambique).

South African Airways has signed a codeshare agreement with Gol - Linhas Aéreas (Brazil)!

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways, and Brazilian low-cost airline Gol - Linhas Aéreas have signed codeshare and frequent flyer agreements. Under the codeshare agreement, South African Airways is placing its "SA" code on 20 connecting flights in Brazil operated by Gol - Linhas Aéreas, including Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte and Florianópolis, among others. The codeshare is effective from since 04 July 2019.
Besides the codeshare agremment, the two airlines also signed a frequent flyer programme ("FFP") agreement, which offers members of each airline's programmes, Voyager from South African Airways and Smiles from Gol - Linhas Aéreas, the opportunity to accrue and redeem miles. Customers from Smiles can accrue and redeem miles on flights operated by South African Airways to Africa, Asia and Australia, and Voyager members can accrue and redeem Voyager miles on flights operated by Gol - Linhas Aéreas.

Kenya Airways & Alitalia have signed a codeshare agreement!

The flag carrier of Italy, Alitalia, and Kenya's national airline, Kenya Airways, have signed a broad codeshare agreement. Under the agreement, Alitalia will apply its "AZ" flight code on many services operated by Kenya Airways beyond Nairobi to Mombasa and Kisumu in Kenya, as well as to a further 19 African destinations, such as: Abidjan (Ivory Coast); Accra (Ghana); Addis Ababa (Ethiopia); Antananarivo (Madagascar); Brazzaville (Congo); Dar Es Salaam, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar (Tanzania); Douala (Cameroon); Johannesburg (South Africa); Kigali (Rwanda); Khartoum (Sudan); Kinshasa and Lubumbashi (Democratic Republic of Congo); Lagos (Nigeria); Maputo and Nampula (Mozambique); Moroni-Hahaya (Comoros); Seychelles. Alitalia is also widening its network in Africa, where the Italian airline now operates direct services to Johannesburg, Casablanca, Algier, Tunis and Cairo, by placing its "AZ" flight code on Kenya Airways' new service between Rome and Nairobi.
In return, Kenya Airways will expand its offer to Italy and Europe by placing its "KQ" flight code on Alitalia's services from Rome to 16 Italian domestic destinations (Brindisi, Bologna, Bari, Catania, Florence, Genoa, Lamezia Terme, Milan Malpensa, Naples, Palermo, Pisa, Reggio Calabria, Turin, Trieste, Venice and Verona) and to 9 international destinations (Athens, Barcelona, Casablanca, Geneva, Larnaca, Madrid, Malaga, Malta and Valencia).
The new codeshare flights are available for from 14 March 2019, for travels from 12 June 2019 when Kenya Airways will inaugurate its four-weekly service between Nairobi and Rome.

Mozambique: LAM - Mozambique Airlines & Fastjet (Mozambique) have signed a codeshare agreement! [update]

update (18 April 2019): The codeshare relationship between Fastjet (Mozambique) and LAM Mozambique Airlines will be initiated on the Maputo <> Beira & Maputo <> Quelimane routes effective 18 April 2019, soon to be followed by the Maputo <> Tete route.

Mozambique's national airline, LAM Mozambique Airlines (Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique - LAM), and Fastjet (Mozambique) have signed a codeshare agreement. Under the agreement the two airlines will sell seats on each other's flights between Maputo, Beira, Tete and Quelimane, using their respective airline codes. The codeshare relationship will be implemented first on the Maputo <> Beira route from 25 February 2019, thereafter, followed by the Maputo <> Tete and Maputo <> Quelimane routes during March 2019. The agreement is intended to strengthen the route networks of LAM and Fastjet (Mozambique), to facilitate commercial sales and to improve passenger convenience in flight schedules. It follows the relationship announced by the two carriers in March 2018.

Kenya Airways & Delta Air Lines have entered into a codeshare partnership! [update]

update (16 April 2019): Kenya Airways has reached an agreement with Delta Air Lines to activate its codeshare in the US and Canada. The arrangement will enable travelers to connect from New York, using the direct flight from Nairobi, to other cities within the US and Canada opening many more opportunities at more competitive fares.
The destinations available from New York are: Chicago O Hare – Illinois, Denver – Colorado, Orlando – Florida, Miami – Florida, Raleigh Durham - North Carolina, Phoenix – Arizona, Charlotte - North Carolina.
The following destinations will be added subject to government and regulatory approvals: Houston – Texas, Philadelphia – Pennsylvania, Columbus – Ohio, Kansas City – Missouri, Toronto – Ontario, Montreal – Quebec, Ottawa – Ontario, Edmonton – Alberta. 

Kenya's flag carrier, Kenya Airways, and American airline Delta Air Lines, both members of the SkyTeam alliance, have entered into a codeshare partnership on flights to and from Kenya Airways' hub at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. Under the codeshare partnership, Delta Air Lines places its code (DL) on Kenya Airways' flights from Amsterdam, Paris, London, and Accra to Nairobi, enhancing connectivity and providing customers with a one-stop seamless travel experience from the USA. In addition, Delta Air Lines also places its code (DL) on Kenya Airways' services to more than 10 key cities across Africa, including: Addis Ababa, Lilongwe, Maputo, Johannesburg and Djibouti City. The new agreement became effective on 11 August 2018.

KLM & Kulula have signed a codeshare agreement!

The flag carrier airline of the Netherlands, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and South African low-cost airline Kulula.com have signed a codeshare agreement to expand both airlines' network. Effective 29 May 2018, KLM will add a KL code to kulula.com's domestic route network in South Africa, enabling KLM's passengers from around the world connecting in Johannesburg and Cape Town to continue with a single ticket issue and a one-stop check-in and baggage transfer to:

• East London, Cape Town, Durban and George from Johannesburg
• Durban also from Cape Town

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways, and Angola's flag carrier, TAAG Angola Airlines, have signed a new codeshare agreement. Under the extended agreement, South African Airways will put its "SA" code on TAAG's direct services between Johannesburg <> Luanda and between Cape Town <> Luanda effective 15 January 2018. In return, TAAG Angola Airlines will put its "DT" code on South African Airways' direct services between Johannesburg <> Luanda. In the near future, South African Airways' flights between Johannesburg <> Harare, Johannesburg <> Lusaka, and Johannesburg <> Hong Kong will also become part of the codeshare agreement.
South African Airways and TAAG Angola Airlines formed an interline relationship in 1996 and expanded it into a commercial partnership in 2007.

Emirates and flydubai further expanded their partnership, now including Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar!

Dubai-based Emirates, the largest airline in the Middle East, and flydubai, a low-cost airline also based in Dubai, have expanded their existing codeshare agreement. The new, expanded network now includes 16 additional destinations to which Emirates' passengers will be able travel on a single ticket including Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRE) in northern Tanzania and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) onthe  island of Zanzibar.

Ethiopian Airlines & Azul Brazilian Airlines signed a codeshare agreement!

Ethiopia's flag carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, and Brazilian carrier Azul Brazilian Airlines have entered a codeshare agreement effective 01 October 2017. Under the new agreement, Ethiopian Airlines will put its "ET"-code on flights to seven destinations in Brazil operated by Azul Brazilian Airlines (São Paulo (Guarulhos) to Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Goiania, Porto Alegre, Cuiabá, Foz do Iguaçu and Florianopolis), while Azul Brazilian Airlines will reciprocally market Ethiopian Airlines' vast network throughout Africa and beyond.

South African Airways suspends Johannesburg <> Abu Dhabi & discontinues codeshare with Etihad Airways!

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways (SAA), will cease its operations between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates from 01 March 2016. According to the airline, the decision follows extensive analysis and efforts to make the route sustainable over a much shorter period than anticipated. South African Airways (SAA) will also discontinue the codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways, due to route network rationalisation.  SAA Acting CEO Musa Zwane said in report from the South African Government News Agency: "[...] the airline is confident that most routes previously served through this code share can be accommodated through SAA's other code share partners and within the Star Alliance." Etihad Airways is the second-largest airline of the United Arab Emirates.

South Africa: Qatar Airways & Comair sign codeshare agreement!

The state-owned flag carrier of Qatar, Qatar Airways, and South Africa-based Comair, which operates scheduled services on domestic routes as a British Airways franchisee and also as a low-cost carrier under its own kulula.com brand, have signed a codeshare agreement. Effective 23 February 2016, Qatar Airways will place its code on flights that have British Airways livery, operated by its franchise Comair, from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban, Harare, Victoria Falls, and Port Elizabeth. Qatar Airways will also place its code on flights operated by Comair from Cape Town to Durban and Port Elizabeth.

South African Airways & Jet Airways to expand codeshare partnership!

According to aviation specialists airlineroute.net, South African Airways (SAA) and the second largest Indian airline, Jet Airways, are set to expand their codeshare agreement. As from 13 August 2015, the partnership between the two airlines will include enhanced connection between India and South Africa via Abu Dhabi, as well as domestic flights in South Africa.
