Kenya Airways currently operates seven weekly flights between Nairobi and Cape Town that go via Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone (Zambia). The airline will also introduce four additional flights per week to Mauritius from 07 June 2018.
In the months of July and August, Kenya Airways will have two additional night flights to Amsterdam (The Netherlands), per week and two other extra day flights to Paris in France. There will be three additional night flights to Accra (Ghana) and Freetown (Sierra Leone) effective August 2018. South African Airways announces price cuts
Global jet fuel prices are currently decreasing and South African Airways has therefore announced certain price cuts.
Flights from Johannesburg to various African destinations, such as Bujumbura (Burundi) and Kigali (Rwanda), Point Noire (Congo), Libreville (Gabon) and Cotonou (Benin), will experience average reductions of USD15 per segment (approximately R249 per round trip). Total long haul return ticket costs will be cut by USD7 per segment (approximately R116 per round trip) and domestic return flights by USD5 per segment (approximately R83 per round trip).
According to South African Airways, the decreases more than compensate for the European Union carbon emissions tax of between €1 and €2 (between roughly R10 and R21) which the airline will implement next month.
The carbon emissions tax is opposed by airlines and governments around the world because it has been unilaterally imposed by the European Union despite proposals by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for a fair and equitable approach to be agreed under the auspices of the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Today is World AIDS Day - "Getting to Zero"
World AIDS Day, observed 01 December each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Every World Aids Day has a certain theme - this year's one is about "Getting to Zero". Backed by the United Nations, the "Getting to Zero" campaign will run until 2015.
The idea of the World Aids Day was conceived in August 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, who were both working as information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Bunn and Netter took their idea to the Director of the Global Programme on AIDS (now known as UNAIDS) Dr. Jonathan Mann. He liked the concept, approved it, and agreed with the recommendation that the first observance of World AIDS Day should be 01 Dec 1988.

Europe: Ash cloud forces airlines to change flight schedules
update II (25 May 2011): According to Eurocontrol, the ash clouds appear to be dissipating quickly due to reduced activity from Iceland's Grimsvƶtn volcano. Air traffic is therefore expected to be back to normal on 26 May 2011.
update (25 May 2011): According to Eurocontrol, European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, the ash cloud was not expected to affect many of the trans-Atlantic flights because it was mostly north of the usual routes and was not reaching above 35,000 feet. Airliners crossing the Atlantic usually cruise at altitudes above 37,000 feet, where the thin air density reduces fuel burn. Some trans-Atlantic services may suffer “minor delays” though as they have to take longer routes to avoid Iceland.
Travellers should however be aware of the situation in Europe which may result in sudden closure of destination airports in Europe, causing flights to be diverted or not leaving in the first place. Please contact your airlines to confirm the status of your flights.
Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) confirmed that flights between South Africa and Europe have not been affected by the ash cloud caused by the Grimsvƶtn volcano in Iceland so far.
Ash from a massive plume of smoke from an eruption of Iceland's most active volcano, the Grimsvƶtn, will spread south to parts of Europe during the week.
Airlines, such as British Airways and KLM, already began cancelling flights to, from and in Britain late on Monday (23 May 2011) because of the ash cloud in its airspace, although experts expected no repeat of travel chaos from the eruption of the vulcano Eyjafjallajƶkull about a year ago. The ash cloud has also swept over western Norway and Denmark, stalling air traffic in parts of Norway and causing delays in Copenhagen, Denmark. More countries will follow and even transatlantic flights are likely to be affected. The UK Civil Aviation Authority said in the meantime that Grimsvƶtn's ash cloud could affect British-bound transatlantic flights on Thursday or Friday, depending on wind direction. We keep you posted!

EU: New air passenger compensation rights
Airline passengers who are delayed by more than three hours should get the same compensation as if their flights have been cancelled, European judges have ruled. The regulation provides that, in the event of cancellation of a flight, passengers are entitled to flat-rate compensation of between EUR 250 and EUR 600.
Airlines will be required not to cancel a flight unless it fits strict criteria set down in the new law.
The ruling stated: “Passengers on a flight which is cancelled at short notice have a right to compensation, even when they are re-routed by the airline on another flight, if they lose three hours or more in relation to the duration originally planned."
The judges said that a technical problem with an aircraft could not be regarded as an "extraordinary circumstance", unless the problem stemmed from events which "by their nature or origin are not inherent in the normal exercise of the activity of the air carrier concerned and are beyond its actual control".
