South African Airways (SAA) unveils new domestic and regional routes amid expansion plans!

South African Airways (SAA) has announced the launch of several new domestic and regional routes as part of its strategic growth plan. Speaking at Africa’s Travel Indaba in Durban, SAA’s Interim Chief Commercial Officer, Tebogo Tsimane, revealed the airline’s plans to strengthen its network and reestablish its position as a key player in the Southern African aviation market.

New domestic routes:

• Johannesburg to George: Set to commence in April 2026.
• Johannesburg to East London: Launch date to be confirmed.
• Cape Town to Durban : Launch date to be confirmed.

New regional routes:

• Johannesburg to Gaborone, Botswana: Service launching in October 2025.
• Cape Town to Mauritius: Seasonal service beginning November 2025.

International expansion plans:

In line with its broader global strategy, SAA has also confirmed plans to resume intercontinental flights in 2026. The airline intends to introduce new routes from South Africa to Mumbai, India, and Guangzhou, China, with connections via Southeast Asia.

Ethiopian Airlines to launch flights between Addis Ababa <> Bangalore (Bengaluru)!

Ethiopia's flag carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, is set to launch scheduled flights between Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa and Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bangalore (Bengaluru), India. Effective 27 October 2019, the airline will operate four weekly direct flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays to the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. Currently, Ethiopian Airlines operates passenger flights to two destinations in India, namely Mumbai and Delhi.

Air India to resume flights between Mumbai <> Nairobi! [update]

update (12 October 2019): According to TourismUpdate, Air India will resume its service between Mumbai and Nairobi on 19 November 2019.

update (03 September 2019): According to RoutesOnline, Air India will resume its service between Mumbai and Nairobi on 27 November 2019.

Air India, the national carrier of India, is set to resume direct flights between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, Kenya. Effective 27 September 2019 ("World Tourism Day"), the airline will operate four weekly return flights on board a Boeing B787 Dreamliner to Kenya's capital. Air India used to operate directly between India and Kenya but later abandoned its operations.

Air Tanzania to launch direct flights between Dar es Salaam <> Johannesburg! [update]

update (14 May 2019): Effective 16 July 2019, Air Tanzania will operate an Airbus A220-300 between Dar es Salaam <> Johannesburg.

The flag carrier airline of Tanzania, Air Tanzania, will launch direct flights between Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg. Effective 28 June 2019, the airline will operate four weekly return flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays to South Africa. Air Tanzania will also launch a new service between Dar es Salaam and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai, India. Effective 17 July 2019, the airline will operate three weekly return flights to Mumbai.Air Tanzania's Boeing B787 Dreamliner, configured with 22 seats in business class and 240 in economy class, will service both routes.

Rwandair to launch flights to China!

The flag carrier of Rwanda, Rwandair, will extend its service between Kigali International Airport (KGL) in Kigali and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai (India) to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) in Guangzhou (China). Effective 18 June 2019, the airline will operate four weekly frequencies on board an A330-200 aircraft. Although Rwandair has 5th freedom traffic rights on the Mumbai <> Guangzhou sector, reservation is currently not available.

Air Tanzania to launch flights between Dar es Salaam <> Mumbai! [update]

update (19 July 2019): Air Tanzania has finally launched its first long haul destination on 17 July 2019 and now serves Mumbai in India three times a week!

The flag carrier airline of Tanzania, Air Tanzania, is set to introduce its first cross-continent flight outside Africa in September 2018. According to the online edition of the Daily News, a government-owned newspaper from Tanzania, the airline is planning to operate three weekly flights between Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai, India. Air Tanzania will commence the new service once the airline's brand new Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner arrives in Tanzania anytime from August 2018.

RwandAir: Flights to Harare and Mumbai will start in April 2017!

The flag carrier airline of Rwanda, Rwandair, has confirmed the launch dates for its new services to Harare (Zimbabwe) and Mumbai (India). Flights between Kigali International Airport (KGL) in Kigali and Harare International Airport (HRE) in Harare will commence on 01 April 2017 and flights between Kigali and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai on 03 April 2017. The flights to Harare which will be tagged to the existing Lusaka (Zambia) route will be operated daily while the Mumbai flights will be operated non-stop four times per week respectively.

Rwandair to introduce direct flights between Kigali <> Mumbai!

The flag carrier airline of Rwanda, Rwandair, is set to introduce direct flights between Kigali International Airport (KGL) in Kigali and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai, India, on 17 April 2017. The airline will operate flights from Kigali to Mumbai every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and from Mumbai to Kigali every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Kenya Airways & Jet Airways expand their existing codeshare agreement!

Kenya's flag carrier, Kenya Airways, and India's second largest airline, Jet Airways, have expanded their existing codeshare agreement on 15 November 2016. Under the expanded agreement, Kenya Airways places its flight code (KQ) on Jet Airways' domestic flights between Mumbai (BOM), New Delhi (DEL), Ahmedabad (AMD) and Hyderabad (HYD).
The existing codeshare agreement continues to include Jet Airways' code (9W) on Kenya Airways' double daily flights on the Mumbai – Nairobi route, allowing Jet Airways' guests to connect to other onward destinations in Africa.

RwandAir to launch direct flights between Kigali <> Mumbai!

South African Airways & Jet Airways to expand codeshare partnership!

According to aviation specialists airlineroute.net, South African Airways (SAA) and the second largest Indian airline, Jet Airways, are set to expand their codeshare agreement. As from 13 August 2015, the partnership between the two airlines will include enhanced connection between India and South Africa via Abu Dhabi, as well as domestic flights in South Africa.

South African Airways cancels direct flights Johannesburg <> Mumbai (India)

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways (SAA), will from 01 April 2015 redirect its flights to all destinations in India via Abu Dhabi through its new direct service with onward code-share agreement connections with Etihad Airways and Jet Airways into the sub-continent. New destinations in India include Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Madras/Chennai among others. South African Airways will operate its last direct Johannesburg <> Mumbai service on 28 March 2015. Passengers booked on flights departing after the end date of the direct service will be accommodated on the reconfigured network.

South Africa Airways expands codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways!

According to aviation specialists airlineroute.net, South African Airways (SAA) is set to expand its codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways. South Africa's flag carrier will add its code "SA" to nine new routes operated by Etihad Airways from 01 Feb 2015 (7 routes) and from 06 Feb 2015 (2 routes). Earlier in January 2015 (21 Jan 2015), the SAA already started to display its code on Etihad Airways' flights between Abu Dhabi's Abu Dhabi International Airport and Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea.

South African Airways & Jet Airways to enter into a code share agreement

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways, and the second largest Indian airline, Jet Airways, will enter into a code share agreement . The agreement comes into effect from 18 April 2013 and will allow the airlines to book its passengers on its partner carriers and provide seamless transport to multiple destinations where it has no presence.
Under the arrangement South African Airways will codeshare on Jet Airways’ domestic operations between Mumbai and Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram, while Jet Airways will codeshare on South African Airways’ flights between Mumbai and Johannesburg and beyond to Cape Town and Durban.
Jet Airways suspended its South African operations in June 2012.

Kenya Airways not to increase flights between Nairobi & Delhi (India)

Kenya's flag carrier, Kenya Airways, has revised its Winter 2013/14 schedule for the Nairobi (NBO) <> New Delhi (DEL) route. The airline is not increasing the number of flights, as previously planned, to four weekly flights and will instead remain at three weekly flights between the two destinations.
Kenya Airways launched nonstop flights to the Indian capital New Delhi, the airlines second destination in India after Mumbai, on 15 May 2012. Kenya Airways is operating a Boeing 767-300 on the route.

South African Airways: More flights during summer season

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways, will increase the number of flights as well as additional capacity on popular holiday routes during the summer season.
From 03 October 2012, the airline will be offering non-stop daily flights to Mumbai in India. South African Airways will be operating an Airbus A320-200 with 36 business and 186 economy-class seats on the route.
Effective 13 Sept 2012, the airline will add three flights to its daily Johannesburg-Nairobi schedule, bringing flights to 10 a week.
Between 06 October 2012 and 13 March 2013, South Africa's flag carrier will increase the number of international flights between São Paulo in Brazil and Johannesburg from currently 10 flights per week to 11 flights per week.
Between mid-December 2012 and mid-January 2013 South African Airways will deploy a wide-body aircraft on the Johannesburg <> Mauritius route and the Johannesburg <> Cape Town route to cater for an increase in demand by holiday travellers.

Kenya Airways to increase flights to Dubai, India & Europe

Kenya's flag carrier Kenya Airways has introduced a new direct flight to Dubai which will operate three times a week with late evening departures from Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to capture the late connecting traffic arriving into the airport. This is in addition to the daily Dubai service that the airline operates. The airline will now operate 10 non-stop flights to Dubai.
Kenya Airways has also increased the number of flights to Mumbai (India) from daily to 10 flights a week and will operate 3 weekly fligths to Delhi (India).
Effective July 2012, flights to London will increase to 10 flights per week on-board a 322 seater Boeing 777-200. Kenya Airways' flights to Paris will increase to 6 weekly flights during the July – August peak period and the daily Amsterdam capacity will be upgraded to Boeing 777-200.
