South Africa: 210 rhinos killed by poachers so far in 2012

South Africa's Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and South African National Parks (SANParks) have published the current number of rhinos poached in South Africa since the beginning of 2012. According to their official statistics, a total of 210 rhinos got illegally killed in South Africa this year so far. About a month ago, the number of rhinos killed by poachers stood at 159. The Kruger National Park alone has lost a disturbing total of 127 (95) rhinos since January 2012. Encouragingly, the number of arrests continues to rise, with the arrests for 2012 now totaling 128 (90 arrests).

  • North-West Province - 19 rhinos poached
  • Eastern Cape - 3 rhinos poached
  • Free State - 0 rhinos poached
  • KwaZulu Natal - 22 rhinos poached
  • Western Cape - 1 rhinos poached
  • Northern Cap - 0 rhinos poached
