Namibia: City of Windhoek renames streets and stadium!

The City of Windhoek has announced a series of official street name changes, effective Friday, 24 October 2025. According to a public notice issued on 20 October 2025, these updates are part of the municipality’s ongoing initiative to celebrate and preserve the legacy of distinguished Namibians who have made remarkable contributions to the country’s social, cultural, and developmental heritage.

In Khomasdal, Rolls Royce Street and Isabella Street will now be known as Reverend Frederick Joseph Street, while Street 1A and Street 1B in Auasblick will be renamed Immanuel Karuhumba Street.

In Olympia, Sydney Atkinson Street becomes Aaron Shihepo Street, and in Windhoek North, Sheffield Street will carry the new name Simataa Khama Street/Link.

In Katutura, Barug Street will be renamed Dr Fleming Aspara Street, and the Khomasdal Stadium will officially take on the new name Bobby Sissing Stadium.

The City of Windhoek confirmed that the physical installation of new street signs reflecting these changes will take place in the near future.

Namibia: Windhoek renames Feld Street in honour of Sir Seretse Khama!

The City of Windhoek has officially announced that Feld Street will be renamed in honour of Sir Seretse Khama, effective 09 October 2025. The street is located in the Ausspannplatz (Dr. António Agostinho Neto Square) area, a northern inner-city district just north of Windhoek’s central business district.

Sir Seretse Khama (1921–1980) was the founding President of Botswana and a highly respected African statesman. A member of the Bamangwato royal family, he studied in South Africa and the United Kingdom, where he married Ruth Williams, a union that sparked controversy in the late 1940s. After Botswana's independence in 1966, Khama became its first president, guiding the country from poverty to stability through democratic governance, economic management, and development of its diamond industry. His leadership set the foundation for Botswana's long-term peace and prosperity.

Namibia: Seven streets in Windhoek have been renamed!

The City of Windhoek has recently renamed seven streets in Windhoek, Namibia, to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities and Namibia. Several new streets were also named. According to the Namibian Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, the renaming of these streets serves as a testament to Namibia's challenging and painful history, as all honorees have contributed immensely to the attainment of the country’s independence.
The follwing streets in Windhoek have been renamed:

• Auasblick Extension 1: Eneas Peter Nanyemba Street has been renamed Jason Mutumbulua Street
• Dolam: Sin Street has been renamed Ulrich Paulino Street
• Windhoek North: Johann Albrecht Street has been renamed Gaob Dr. Justus //Garoeb Street
• Pionierspark: Jordan Street has been renamed Arch. Bonifatius Haushiku Street
• Goreangab Extension 5: Dam Beach Street has been renamed John Nankudhu Street
• Elisenheim Lifestyle Village: a street without a name has been named Bishop Hendrik Frederik Street
• Olympia: Hennie Laubscher Street has been renamed General Karel Ndjoba Street

The follwing new streets in Windhoek have been named:

• Auasblick Extension 1: Adv. Fanuel Kozonguizi Street
• Academia Extension 1: Nicodemus Kavikunua Street
• Rocky Crest Extension 4: Simon Sisingi Hiskia Street, Gaob Josophat Gawa-!Nab Street, Chief Kamatuara Kukuri Street, Frans Kambangula Street, Bryan O’linn Street, Karl Kazondunge Street, Festus Kamburona Street, and Jacob Marengo Street

Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls is planning to rename all its 86 streets!

Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) is planning to rename all its 86 streets and roads. According to Victoria Falls' town clerk Christopher Dube, a committee has been formed "to spearhead the streets renaming process" which is expected to end at the end of June 2016. The city council already decided to rename Livingstone Way to Robert Mugabe Way and Park Way to Joshua Nkomo Way in March 2015, but is still waiting for the government's approval. As of now, the old sign posts in Victoria Falls are still up. We'll keep you posted!

Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls to rename streets!

According to Bulawayo24.com, the city council of Victoria Falls has decided to rename Livingstone Way to Robert Mugabe Way and Park Way to Joshua Nkomo Way. The news website cites Victoria Falls' town clerk Christopher Dube saying that the matter would be finalised at the next full council meeting next month [April 2015] and that the proposal would be implemented after the meeting.

South Africa: Johannesburg to rename streets

The City of Johannesburg has announced that five streets in downtown Johannesburg as well as two streets in Alexandra and Orlando West will soon be named after well-known heroes of South Africa's struggle for liberation and to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the country's democratic transition. Dual signage containing both old and new names will be retained for a maximum of 12 months.

• Bree Street > Lilian Ngoyi Street
• Jeppe Street > Rahima Moosa Street
• President Street > Helen Joseph Street
• Noord Street > Sophie de Bruyn Street
• Lion Crescent > Japie Vilankulu Crescent (Alexandra)
• Thabeta Street > Hastings Ndlovu Street (Orlando West)

Namibia: Windhoek to rename streets

Travellers, it is time again to update your city maps of Windhoek! The municipality of Namibia's capital has approved the renaming of the following streets in the city:

• John Meinert Street will be named after António Agostinho Neto
• Bahnhof Street will be named after José Eduardo Dos Santos
• the pedestrian bridge across Arebusch river (Khomasda) will become Magdalena Stoffels bridge
• Storch Street will become Jackson Kaujeua Street

Cape Town renamed six streets

Travellers, update your Cape Town city maps. The city yesterday (21 March 2013, Human Rights Day) officially renamed six streets and one civic center after South African struggle icons and a South African poet.

• Coen Steytler Avenue is now Walter Sisulu Avenue
• Hendrik Verwoerd Drive is now  Uys Krige Drive
• Modderdam Road is now Robert Sobukwe Road
• Lansdowne Road (between Turfhall and Palmyra roads) is now Imam Haron Road
• Lansdowne road (between Wetton and Swartklip roads) is now Japhta K Masemola Road
• Lansdowne Road (between Swartklip and Baden Powell roads) is now Govan Mbeki Road
• Athlone Civic Centre is now Dulcie September Civic Centre

Update your city maps - new road names in Cape Town

update (23 Feb 2012): Residents of Cape Town have until the end of March to comment on the renaming of 27 streets, the City of Cape Town said on Thursday. [more info] 

Travellers coming to Cape Town should keep in mind that the City of Cape Town is currently in the process of re-naming various streets. Four of Cape Town's roads already got new names, while eight of the city's most widely used roads are in the queue to get re-named.

The four roads that already got a new name are

• Oswald Pirow Street > Chris Barnard Street
• Eastern Boulevard > Nelson Mandela Boulevard
• concourse between Artscape theatre and Civic Centre > Albert Luthuli concourse
• Western Boulevard > Helen Suzman Boulevard

The pedestrian section of Castle Street is to be renamed after Khoisan leader Krotoa.

The seven roads to be re-named are:
