Namibia: FlyNamibia launches flights to Botswana! [update #2]

update (14 June 2024): FlyNamibia has announced that from 03 July 2024 flights to Katima Mulilo will move from Eros Airport (ERS) to Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH). Selected flights between Windhoek and Maun will operate on the route Windhoek - Maun - Katima Mulilo - Windhoek. Direct flights to Katima Mulilo will resume on specific dates starting in November 2024.

update (08 May 2024): FlyNamibia will operate flights between Windhoek and Maun from 03 July 2024 until 31 October 2024.

Namibian domestic and regional carrier FlyNamibia is set to launch flights to Botswana. The airline will operate three weekly direct flights on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays between Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek and Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun. Flights will depart Windhoek at 10:15 and arrive in Maun at 11:15, while the return flights will depart Maun at 12:15 and arrive in Windhoek at 13:15. FlyNamibia's new route to Botswana will commence on 03 July 2024.

Maun Airport (MUB) is is situated in Maun in Botswana's North West District. The airport is the second busiest airport in the country in terms of passenger traffic and the main gateway to the famous Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve and other parts of the North West District.

Ethiopian Airlines introduces a new triangular route connecting Ethiopia, Zambia and Botswana!

The flag carrier of Ethiopia and Africa's largest airline in terms of passengers carried, Ethiopian Airlines, is set to introduce a new triangular route connecting Addis Ababa with two destinations in Zambia and Botswana. Effective 10 June 2024, the airline will operate three weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays between Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport (NDL) in Ndola, Zambia, and Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun, Botswana. Ethiopian Airlines will use a 160-seat Boeing 737 MAX on the new route. Flights will depart Addis Ababa at 08:30 and arrive in Maun at 12:40. The connecting flight will depart at 13:30 and will arrive in Zambia's commercial capital at 15:30. The final leg of the triangular route will start in Ndola at 16:20 and arrive in Addis Ababa at 21:25.
Ndola is Zambia's ommercial capital city. The capital of Copperbelt Province lies just 10 kilometres from the border with DR Congo and about 320 kilometres north of Lusaka. Maun is Botswana's tourism capital. The city lies on the southern fringes of the Okavango Delta and is known as the gateway to the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Zimbabwe: Fastjet has suspeneded its only service to Botswana!

Zimbabwe’s low-cost airline, Fastjet, has suspended its only service to Botswana. The airline stopped operating flights betweem Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) in Victoria Falls and Maun International Airport (MUB) in Maun, the tourism capital of Botswana. According to Fastjet, the route has proven not to have sustainable growth was therefor terminated. However, charter and ad hoc flights to Maun will be operated in the peak season. Namibia: FlyNamibia has three new regional destinations on the cards for 2024!

The Managing Director of FlyNamibia, Andre Compion, announced in Jon Howell's AviaDev Insight Africa podcast that FlyNamibia has three new regional destinations on the cards for 2024. According to Mr Compion, as from April 2024 the airline will be servicing Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun, Botswana, and Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, out of Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek. He further announced that FlyNamibia is also in the final phase of introducing flights to Luanda in Angola in 2025.

CemAir to launch flights between Johannesburg <> Maun!

South African domestic and regional carrier CemAir is set to launch a new service to Botswana. The airline will operate daily non-stop flights between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and Maun International Airport (MUB) in Maun from 01 May 2023. Flights will depart Johannesburg at 12:15 and arrive in Maun at 14:00, while the return flights will depart Maun at 14:30 and arrive in Johannesburg at 16:05.

Botswana: Refurbished Maun International Airport (MUB) in Maun officially opened!

The President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, has officially opened the refurbished Maun International Airport (MUB) in Maun on 20 January 2023. The upgrade of the airport included the modernisation of the terminal building, which can now accommodate and process 270 passengers per hour, as well as a runway extension to 3.7km to accommodate aircraft equivalent to Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.

Maun International Airport (MUB) is located in the city of Maun in Botswana's North-West District. In 2021, the airport recorded a total of 116,345 passengers and the number increased to a total of 200,929 between January and October 2022. Maun is known as the gateway to the Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve.

Fastjet (Zimbabwe) to launch flights between Victoria Falls <> Maun!

Low-cost carrier Fastjet (Zimbabwe) is set to launch scheduled passenger flights between Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) in Victoria Falls and Maun International Airport (MUB) in Maun, Botswana. Effective 30 June 2022, the airline will operate four weekly direct flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays using an Embraer ERJ145 aircraft. The new Maun service sees Fastjet (Zimbabwe) operating scheduled flights into Botswana for the first time and bringing to three the international destinations that fastjet has connected Victoria Falls to, after OR Tambo International Airprt (JNB) in Johannesburg (South Africa) and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP), located 27 km north east of Nelspruit in Mpumalanga (South Africa).

Airlink to resume direct flights between Cape Town <> Maun!

South African privately-owned regional carrier Airlink has announced that it will be re-introducing flights between Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town and Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun in Botswana. Effective 01 May 2021, the airline will offer two-weekly direct return flights to Botswana's "tourism capital" on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Flights will depart Cape Town at 10:20 and will arrive in Maun at 12:55, while the return flights will depart Maun at 13:15 and will arrive in Cape Town at 16:05.

South Africa: Airlink is set to resume flights to Botswana!

South African privately-owned regional carrier Airlink is set to resume flights to Botswana. Following the relaxation of international travel restrictions in the country, the airline will re-introduce scheduled flights between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE) in Gaborone from 16 November 2020. Flights to Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun and Kasane International Airport (BBK) in Kasane are planned to resume on 30 November 2020. We'll keep you posted!

Botswana set to to open borders for private charter flights!

Botswana's Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism announced on 26 October 2020 that the country will permit private charter flights into Botswana again from 01 November 2020. The private charter flights will be allowed to land at two ports of entry namely, Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun and Kasane International Airport (BBK) in Kasane. Both airports are located in the North-West District of Botswana.
The Government of Botswana is finalising the required legislative framework to facilitate such air travel which will include protocols for compliance.

Botswana: Mack Air to launch scheduled services between Maun <> Windhoek!

Mack Air, a private air charter airline based in Maun (Botswana), is set to launch scheduled flights between Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek. Effective April 2020, the airline will operate three weekly return flights to Namibia's capital on board a Cessna Grand Caravan C208 EX with a capacity of 10 passengers. Bookings will open on 01 December 2019. According to the State Of The Nation Address by Botswana's President Mokgweetsi Masisi (18 November 2019), the airline has not only been licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) to carry out scheduled services between Maun and Windhoek but also between Kasane and Victoria Falls. Air Botswana to improve its domestic connectivity and to expand its regional network!

Botswana's flag carrier, Air Botswana, is set to improve its domestic connectivity and to expand its regional network.  Domestically, the airline will introduce a connection between Francistown and Kasane which will shortly be followed by a new service between Francistown and Maun. Regionally, Air Botswana will recommence direct operations between Gaborone and Cape Town. Later in 2019, the airline will also re-introduce scheduled flights between Kasane and Johannesburg. Air Botswana will also recommence flights from Gaborone to Harare and Lusaka. This will be a triangular operation starting off from Gaborone to Harare and onwards to Lusaka. All new routes will all be implemented in the first quarter of the 2019/20 financial year.

Botswana: Free wifi at international airports!

update (20 June 2018): The free wifi service at Botswana's four international airports is limited to 60 minutes!

The Botswana Investment Trade Centre (BITC) and Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) have introduced free wifi at Botswana's four international airports, namely Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE) in Gaborone, Kasane International Airport (BBK) in Kasane, Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun and Francistown International Airport (FRW) in Francistown. To access the service while at one of the airports, you have to select the "Go Botswana" network on your mobile device and fill-in a brief questionaire on the landing page.

Airlink enhances its service between Cape Town <> Maun and Cape Town <> Victoria Falls!

South African carrier Airlink will from 04 June 2018, enhance its service between Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town and Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun, and on 02 July 2018, its service between Cape Town and Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) in Victoria Falls, utilizing 83 seater Avro RJ regional jet aircraft, including business class.

Maun: Nhabe Museum to reopen!

The Nhabe Museum in Maun, Botswana, is set to reopen in August 2017. The upgrade of the community museum was funded by a much-needed 1-million pula cash injection from the European Union and included the construction of a new auditorium, new office(s) as well as five studios for locals artists. The Nhabe Museum is located on Sir Seretse Khama Street close to Maun International Airport.

Airlink to increase flights to various destinations in Southern Africa in 2017!

South African carrier Airlink is set to increase the number of flights to various destinations in Southern Africa in the next couple of month.

• Effective 06 February 2017, Airlink will introduce a third daily flight operating midmorning between Cape Town and Windhoek. The midmorning flights will depart daily from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) at 10h00 arriving at Windhoek's Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) at 12:05. The return flight will depart from Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) at 15:00 arriving at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) at 17:05.
• Airlink will during 2017 increase the frequency of its flights between Nelspruit and Vilanculos, Mozambique. The airline currently offers flights on Thursdays and Sundays.
  Flights will depart Nelspruit at 11:45 and will arrive in Vilanculos at 12:55.
• On 26 March 2017, additional flights on Tuesdays and Fridays will be added. 
• On 4 July 2017, additional flights on Mondays and Saturdays will be added.
• On 7 August 2017 flights on Wednesdays will be added, so that the service will be daily.
• Effective 26 March 2017, Airlink will increase the frequency of its flights between Nelspruit and Livingstone to a daily service. Additional flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays. Flights depart Nelspruit at 11:35 and will arrive in Livingstone at 13:10.
• Effective 13 April 2017, Airlink will increase flight frequency between Johannesburg and Vilanculos, Mozambique, offering a daily service. The additional flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays. The direct Johannesburg <> Vilanculos flights depart Johannesburg at 11:30 and arrive in Vilanculos at 13:10. 
• Effective 6 June 2017, Airlink will increase flight frequency between Cape Town and Maun, Botswana, offering a daily service. The additional flights will operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Flights depart Cape Town at 10:35 and will arrive in Maun at 13:05.
