Rwanda introduces a new visa regime!

Rwanda's Directorate of Immigration and Emigration has updated the country's existing visa regime. As of today, citizens of countries members to the African Union, the Commonwealth and La Francophonie get visa upon arrival and are waived visa fees for a stay of 30 days.
Citizens of the East African Community (EAC) member states - Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan - get a pass/entry visa to stay for a period of six month in Rwanda. 

Citizens of Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, Cote d'Ivoire, DR Congo, The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, Haiti, Mauritius, Philippines, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Sao Tome and Principe, Singapore and Qatar are granted 90 day visa free of charge.

Ethiopia has launched e-visa service to all international visitors!

Ethiopia's Immigration and Nationality Affairs Main Department in collaboration with the national airline of Ethiopia, Ethiopian Airlines, has launched an e-visa service for all international visitors to Ethiopia effective 01 June 2018. The new e-visa is processed and issued online on a single webpage where applicants apply, pay and secure their entry visa online. Once the application is approved, applicants will receive an email authorizing them to travel to Ethiopia and they will get their passport stamped with the visa upon arrival at Bole International Airport (ADD) in the country's capital Addis Ababa.

Zimbabwe revises visa regime to boost tourism!

update (16 February 2018): According to the usually very good informed Victoria Falls Guide, the following countries have been added into Zimbabwe's Category B visa section:

Albania, Armenia, Bahrain, Bhutan, Bulgaria, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ethiopia, French Guiana, Guam, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Norfolk Islands, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Reunion, Romania, San Marino, Senegal, Venezuela, Yugoslavia*
*Yugoslavia does not exist anymore. 


The Government of Zimbabwe has introduced a revised visa regime with immediate effect as part of its efforts to improve travel facilitation and unlock the potential of the tourism industry in Zimbabwe. The new visa regime sees 29 countries being moved from Category C (visa before arrival in Zimbabwe) to Category B (visa on arrival in Zimbabwe). These countries include Ethiopia, India, Mexico, Panama and Romania, among others. The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority will make a full list of the 29 countries available soon. We'll keep you posted!

Rwanda to introduce a new visa regime on 01 January 2018!

Rwanda is set to establish a new visa regime on 01 January 2018. The new regulations include the introduction of 30-day visa on arrival for travellers from across the world. Rwanda already has such a system in place for all African countries and a number of countries outside the continent.
Nationals of Australia, Germany, Israel, New Zealand, Sweden, United Kingdom, and United States of America will be issued with entry visa valid for a period up to 30 days and pay for a visa ($30) upon arrival without prior application. [src.]
The new visa regime also adresses areas like visa reciprocity for specific countries whose citizens get free visas with 90 days validity, visa waiver for particular diplomatic and service passport holders and specific 90 day visa on arrival for travelers from the COMESA (The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) region. It also allows Rwandans living abroad with dual nationality to use national IDs to enter Rwanda as well as foreign residents to use their resident IDs for entry.

Zimbabwe scraps visas for SADC countries!

Zimbabwe has, with immediate effect, scrapped visas for all member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). SADC citizens have been moved to Category A of Zimbabwe's visa regime, which refers to countries whose nationals are exempt from visa requirements. 45 countries currently fall under Category A. Nationals of countries in Category B (89) can obtain their visas at the port of entry (on arrival), while nationals of Category C (83) are required to apply for visas prior to travelling to Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe also moved 37 countries, including China*, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Algeria, Turkey and Cuba, from Category C to Category B.
 
*Chinese nationals travelling as a group cleared by tour operators and travel agencies in the People's Republic of China qualify for Category B.

Malawi to introduce a new "visa regime" in October 2015!

update (22 Sept 2015): The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has updated its Malawi travel advice. According to the FCO, it has so far not been advised of the process or requirements of the new visa regime in Malawi which is supposed to come in effect on 01 October 2015. Given the possibility of arrangements being implemented at short notice the FCO advises those visiting Malawi to bring cash in US dollars to cover any possible entry requirements.

update (15 July 2015): According to the latest foreign travel advice Malawi by the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), the Malawian government has announced that it intends to introduce a visa regime for visitors from any country requiring visas for Malawian Citizens visiting their country of citizenship from 01 October 2015.

update (13 July 2015): According to Ulendo Safaris, a tour operator and travel service provider from Malawi, airport immigration in Malawi have started charging the USD75 "entry fee" for visitors on 11 July 2015.

Malawi's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released an update regarding the introduction of an "entry fee" for visitors from any country requiring visas for Malawian Citizens visiting their country of citizenship. 
The Ministry has confirmed this would be the introduction of a new "visa regime" rather than simply an "entry fee". The implementation of the new "visa regime" in Malawi has been postponed from 01 July 2015 to 01 October 2015. The visa will be available on entry on payment of US Dollars in cash. An electronic payment system is, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, currently at an advanced stage. Holders of long term permits will be treated as returning residents and will therefore be exempt from the new visa regime. We will keep you posted!

The visa costs will be as follows:

  • Transit valid 7 days – USD50/person
  • Single entry valid 3 months – USD75/person
  • Multi entry valid 6 months – USD150/person
  • Multi entry valid 12 months – USD250/person
