South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the the Sendelingsdrift Pontoon at the Sendelingsdrift border post in the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is temporarily closed from 21 September 2026 due to high water levels.
The crossing will remain closed until water levels have receded and safety inspections have been completed. Travellers should therefore check the status before planning to enter the park via Sendelingsdrift.
The Sendelingsdrift Pontoon crosses the Orange (Gariep) River between South Africa and Namibia, providing a convenient cross-border route for travellers combining the Richtersveld with southern Namibia. It also avoids the lengthy detour around the river.
Alternative route from Namibia
Visitors travelling from Namibia can still reach the park via the Oranjemund–Alexander Bay border route:
Rosh Pinah > Oranjemund > Alexander Bay > Sanddrift > Sendelingsdrift
The final approximately 95 km between Alexander Bay and Sendelingsdrift is gravel and can be heavily corrugated. A high-clearance vehicle or 4x4 is strongly recommended, particularly for this section and for travel within |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.
Travellers should also ensure that all required vehicle and cross-border documentation is in order and allow plenty of time for the journey. This is a remote area with limited services.
