South Africa's newest low-cost airline, Lift, is set to launch operations on 10 December 2020. The airline's website will be open for online bookings from 10 November 2020. Lift, which will initially make use of Global Aviation's aircraft (three Airbus A320-200), maintenance facilities, cabin crew, pilots and its central flight control facility, will operate seven return flights a day between Cape Town, George and Johannesburg. The airline will offer fully flexible tickets and customers will be able to change their flight as many times as they want to without fees.
Lift is a partnership between established South African airline Global Aviation, which main strategy is to offer fully crewed, maintained and insured aircraft (ACMI) for established airlines, the founder of South African low-cost carrier Kulula, Gidon Novick, and former Uber executive Jonathan Ayache.

New French low-cost airline "Joon" to launch direct flights between Paris <> Cape Town!
The new French low-cost airline Joon, a subsidiary of France's flag carrier Air France, is set to launch direct flights to Cape Town in South Africa next year. Effective 01 April 2018 04 April 2018, the airline will operate three weekly flights on board an Airbus A340 between Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) in Paris and Cape Town International Airport (CPT).

South Africa: Low-cost airline FlySafair set to launch scheduled flights in October 2014
South African low-cost airline FlySafair has opened ticket sales between Cape Town and Johannesburg as well as between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. The first flight between Cape Town and Johannesburg is set for 16 October 2014, while flights between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth will commence on 30 October 2014. FlySafair will charge passengers a base rate which secures a seat on the flight, and allows travellers two pieces of free carry-on luggage (one bag and one personal item) weighing no more than 7kg in total. The airline operates Boeing 737-400's with a seating capacity of 165 passengers per aircraft.

Just days before the first flight, the High Court of South Africa granted an interim court order preventing the airline from starting operations, following an application by rival carriers.

Kenya's new low-cost airline Jambojet to launch operations on 01 April 2014
Great news for travellers in Kenya. Jambojet, a new domestic low-cost airline based in Kenya, will launch operations on 01 April 2014. The airline will initially link Nairobi with Mombasa, Eldoret and Kisumu on a daily basis. Jambojet is a fully-owned subsidary of Kenya Airways and will operate two Boeing B737-300, which are leased from Kenya's flag carrier. Tickets for flights with Jambojet will go on sale from 27 Feb 2014. When entering the market, tickets will be available from Kshs3,000 (US$35) one way.

South Africa: Low-cost carrier FlySafair launched ticket sales
(update 08 Oct 2013): FlySafair just announced via Twitter that contrary to their expectations, the court today granted an interim interdict against FlySafair, so that the airline won’t be starting operations immediately. The court ordered Comair to accommodate FlySafair passengers by honouring their ticket prices & dates of travel as agreed to with FlySafair.

Africa: Pan-continental low-cost carrier Fastjet launched operations
Africa's first pan-continental low-cost carrier, Fastjet, commenced commercial flight operations on 29 Nov 2012 at 06:00am local time with a first aircraft flying passengers from the airline's main hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam to Mwanza in Tanzania. According to the airline, the flight departed on-schedule and was "almost full to capacity". It was followed by a second service to Kilimanjaro International Airport later in the morning.
Fastjet will serve the twice daily routes with three Airbus A319s - two of which have entered service, while the third joins the fleet on 03 December 2012.
The new airline has applied for flying rights to Nairobi and Mombasa in Kenya, Entebbe in Uganda, Kigali in Rwanda as well as to Juba in South Sudan and will launch operations to the destinations in near future. Fastjet will therefore establish a second home base in Nairobi, Kenya, in the first quarter of 2013. Subsequent bases in the west African capitals of Accra (Ghana) and Luanda (Angola) will be added later in 2013.
One-way ticket prices for flights with Fastjet are currently starting at 32,000 Tanzanian Shillings (~US$20) excluding taxes and charges, but are expected to average around US$80.

South Africa: Low-cost airline 1time ditches Livingstone (Zambia) in favour of Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)
South Africa's budget airline 1time and Nu-Aero (Pvt) Ltd have formed a joint venture to operate Fresh Air, Zimbabwe’s first low-cost airline. The new airline will use two McDonnell Douglas MD 87s, configured with 132 and 157 seats, that are provided by 1time.
Fresh Air will initially start with flights between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) in September 2012. A second route in Zimbabwe is also in the planning. In favour of the new Johannesburg <> Victoria Falls (via Harare) service, 1time will cease its operations on the Johannesburg <> Livingstone route.

New low-cost African airline FastJet.com to launch flights in October 2012
update (09 Aug 2012): According to Wolfganghthome's Blog, "representatives of one section of shareholders [of Fly540] apparently put the brakes on any future developments vis a vis the planned rebranding, until questions on the present legal cases and the implications for the company have been resolved to their satisfaction."

Velvet Sky to get three more planes within the next 12 month
Excalibur Aerospace (Pty) Ltd, a service provider to the aviation industry, just bought the majority stake of South Africa's latest low-cost airline airline Velvet Sky from steel and engineering group Macdonald Holdings for an undisclosed amount.
Macdonald Holdings chairperson Cecil Reddy was quoted saying that "Excalibur Aerospace will no doubt continue to grow the business through their service-oriented approach, expansion plans into Africa and commitment to providing affordable air travel to South African commuters".
Velvet Sky saw its inaugural flight take off from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Durban on 22 March 2011. The airline is currently operating a Boeing 737, which it sourced from international aircraft leasing company Aergo.
Excalibur is now planning to introduce three additional aircraft to the Velvet Sky fleet within the next 12 months, with the first being introduced by mid-August 2011.

South Africa: Low-fare airline kulula maintains IOSA safety standard
Kulula, the low-cost airline subsidiary of British Airways franchise Comair, remains the only independent low-fare South African airline registered with IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit). The common global safety benchmark enforces rigorous airline safety standards.
Launched in 2003, the IOSA programme is the airline industry’s first globally accepted audit programme. IOSA provides a common set of audit standards that are centrally managed, continuously updated, and consistently implemented by experts and industry professionals.
Airlines that have undergone an IOSA audit and have cleared all findings enter the IOSA registry. Airlines listed on this registry meet the IOSA standards, which are based on eight areas of airline operational safety:
