Why international travellers in South Africa should carry their original passport at all times!

The Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA), a non-profit organization based in South Africa that serves as the leading voice for inbound tourism in the region, is asking all international travellers in South Africa to carry their original, valid passport at all times. The organisation has seen an increase in cases where tourists have encountered serious difficulties due to not carrying their original travel documents and has therefore compiled an essential guide on travel documentation requirements in South Africa.

Here’s what foreign tourists need to know:

The golden rule: original passport is key

Let's clear up a common misconception: a photocopy of a foreign passport is NOT sufficient identification when travelling within South Africa. The South African Department of Home Affairs is crystal clear: travellers must carry their original, valid passport at all times, as stipulated by the Immigration Act No 13 of 2002 (Section 41).

Why the original matters:

  • Proof of identity: A traveller’s passport is their official form of identification in South Africa.
  • Visa verification: The visa, which is endorsed in the traveller’s passport, proves they are permitted to be in the country.
  • Unexpected checks: Authorities can request to see a traveller’s passport at any time.

Crossing Borders within Southern Africa?

Planning a multi-country trip? Travellers need to ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay in each country, and that they have the necessary visas. Visa requirements vary depending on nationality, so always check with the relevant embassies or consulates before travel. [src.]

OR Tambo International Airport (JNB): Delays at Immigration and Emmigration due to implementation of the new Biometric Movement Control Systems!

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways (SAA), and South African regional airline Airlink have advised their passengers travelling through OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg to allow for additional processing times at immigration points for both departing and arriving flights. The South African Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and the Border Management Agency (BMA) are currently implementing the new Biometric Movement Control Systems (BMCS), which will extend the time required to process customers. As a result, wait times at Immigration and Emigration queues will increase, and may also affect international arrivals baggage collection.
Both airlines strongly recommend that passengers check in early and proceed through security with enough time for Immigration processes. We'll keep you posted!

The biggest cultural event in eSwatini is set to start on  27 August 2024, with the main day (Day 7) set to take place on Monday (02 September 2024). It will be on this day when the main ceremony occurs, with the dancing attended by His Majesty King Mswati III. 02 September 2024 will be a public holiday in eSwatini.

The Reed Dance ceremony, also known as "umhlanga", is a centuries old tradition where the eSwatini's unmarried and childless females present their newly cut reed to the Queen Mother to protect her residence. Tens of thousands of maidens from eSwatini, led by Swazi princesses, gather at the Queen Mother's royal village, the Ludzidzini Royal Residence in Lobamba, dressed in traditional attire; bright short beaded skirts with colourful sashes revealing their bare breasts to dance and sing and celebrate the unification of the Kingdom’s women. South Africa: OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg is experiencing delays!

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed that OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg is currently experiencing rotational delays. This is affecting operations for both international and domestic departures. Passengers are therefor urged to contact their respective airlines or agents for updated flight times.
According to Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), the state-owned provider of air traffic, navigation, training and associated services within South Africa, the delays are a result of unavailable Standard Instrument Departures and Standard Instrument Arrivals that serve operations for Runway 21. This means that generally such delays are experienced when the wind direction favours this particular Runway 21 especially during high peak periods, which was the case today (14 August 2024). The result of this requires ATNS to regulate the demand to ensure that available capacity is not exceeded and safety is prioritized at all times.
ATNS is working around the situation to ensure that delays can be minimised as best as possible to reduce the impact on the airlines and travelling passengers. Furthermore, ATNS is working hard to conclude the maintenance of the affected flight procedures to submit to the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) for validation and approval as soon as possible. We'll keep you posted!
