Why international travellers in South Africa should carry their original passport at all times!

The Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA), a non-profit organization based in South Africa that serves as the leading voice for inbound tourism in the region, is asking all international travellers in South Africa to carry their original, valid passport at all times. The organisation has seen an increase in cases where tourists have encountered serious difficulties due to not carrying their original travel documents and has therefore compiled an essential guide on travel documentation requirements in South Africa.

Here’s what foreign tourists need to know:

The golden rule: original passport is key

Let's clear up a common misconception: a photocopy of a foreign passport is NOT sufficient identification when travelling within South Africa. The South African Department of Home Affairs is crystal clear: travellers must carry their original, valid passport at all times, as stipulated by the Immigration Act No 13 of 2002 (Section 41).

Why the original matters:

  • Proof of identity: A traveller’s passport is their official form of identification in South Africa.
  • Visa verification: The visa, which is endorsed in the traveller’s passport, proves they are permitted to be in the country.
  • Unexpected checks: Authorities can request to see a traveller’s passport at any time.

Crossing Borders within Southern Africa?

Planning a multi-country trip? Travellers need to ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay in each country, and that they have the necessary visas. Visa requirements vary depending on nationality, so always check with the relevant embassies or consulates before travel. [src.]

Uganda to change visa requirements from June 2011

The East African country of Uganda has changed its entry requirement regarding the passport validity. With effect from June 2011 passports must be valid for at least one year from the proposed date of entry. Single entry visa are valid for three months from the date of issue and cost eg £25 (£65 for six-month multiple entry visa) for UK nationals (in the UK) or US$50 when purchased at the point of entry in Uganda.

Tourbrief.com: "Emergency travel documents will no longer be accepted for entry into SA" True?

I just got a very interesting newsletter from tourbrief.com, a website "designed by tourism professionals for tourism professionals". In the newsletter tourbrief is saying that according to TASA (Tour & Safari Association) travellers with "Emergency travel documents are no longer accepted for entry into SA".
"TASA has provided an update on new travel documentation requirements issued by the SA High Commission.
  • Transit visas have been reintroduced for nationals from countries not exempt from visa requirements.
  • Emergency travel documents will no longer be accepted for entry into SA.
  • Travellers travelling to SA have to do so on their national passport, and should have at least two pages blank for entry and departure stamps."
I called SA Tourism and the Embassy in Germany already and both could not confirm the info given by tourbrief.com. I emailed both tourbrief.com and TASA as well. Has anyone of you heard about it?

UPDATE (09 June 2010): I just got an email from tourbrief.com - it seems that the new regulation only applies to some countries. It has something to do with the form of the emergency travel documents. I'll keep you posted once I got more info! Thx to Esther from tourbrief!

UPDATE (09 June 2010): From Tourbrief.com - Following queries, TASA has clarified with the SA High Commission that the restriction on travel with emergency travel documents applies to Namibia.
