Eastern Cape "Free Access Week" 2025: Enjoy free entry to select provincial nature reserves!

The Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency (ECPTA) has officially announced the dates for its popular "Free Access Week" for 2025. From 04 – 12 October 2025, day visitors can enjoy free entry to a selection of the most beautiful nature reserves and game reserves in the Eastern Cape.
This annual initiative is designed to encourage locals and travellers to connect with nature, experience the province’s incredible biodiversity, and promote eco-tourism.

Participating ECPTA-managed nature reserves in the Eastern Cape:

  • Great Fish River Nature Reserve
  • Thomas Baines Nature Reserve
  • Waters Meeting Nature Reserve
  • Tsolwana Game Reserve / Commando Drift Nature Reserve
  • Mpofu / Fort Fordyce Nature Reserve
  • Oviston Nature Reserve
  • East London Coast Nature Reserve
  • Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve
  • Dwesa Nature Reserve
  • Silaka Nature Reserve
  • Mkhambathi Nature Reserve
  • Hluleka Nature Reserve
  • Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve

Important to note:

  • Free Access Week only applies to day visitor gate entry fees.
  • Accommodation, overnight stays, and paid activities remain charged at standard rates.

Eastern Cape: The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) has announced the dates for the "Free Access Week 2024"!

The Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency (ECPTA), mandated to develop and manage protected areas and promote and facilitate the development of tourism in South Africa's Eastern Cape, has announced the dates of the annual "Free Access Week" in the Eastern Cape. From 23 September 2024 until 30 September 2024 the ECPTA is offering free (day) access for South Africans to select Provincial Nature Reserve in the province. The following Nature Reserves are taking part in the "Free Access Week 2024":

  • Oviston Nature Reserve
  • East London Coast Nature Reserve
  • Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve
  • Dwesa Nature Reserve
  • Great Fish River Nature Reserve
  • Thomas Baines Nature Reserve
  • Waters Meeting Nature Reserve
  • Tsolwana Game Reserve/Commando Drift Nature Reserve
  • Mpofu Fort Fordyce Nature Reserve
  • Silaka Nature Reserve
  • Mkambati Nature Reserve
  • Hluleka Nature Reserve

Eastern Cape: The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) has announced the dates for the "Free Access Week 2023"!

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) has announced the dates for the "Free Access Week 2023". Entrance will be waived for day visitors to twelve Nature Resorts in the Eastern Cape from 30 September 2023 to 09 October 2023. The free access promotion does not extend to accommodation and overnight visitors will have to pay for their accommodation. Day visitors will also be exempted from paying the conservation fees for the duration of this promotion. The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) is offering free access to the following Nature Reserves in the Eastern Cape:

  • Great Fish River Nature Reserve
  • Thomas Baines Nature Reserve
  • Waters Meeting Nature Reserve
  • Tsolwana Game Reserve/Commando Drift Nature Reserve
  • Mpofu Fort Fordyce Nature Reserve
  • Oviston Nature Reserve
  • East London Coast Nature Reserve
  • Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve
  • Dwesa Nature Reserve
  • Silaka Nature Reserve
  • Mkambati Nature Reserve
  • Hluleka Nature Reserve

Eastern Cape Tourism has announced the dates of the annual "FREE access" week! [update]

update (19 October 2020): Eastern Cape Tourism has released a list of Provincial Nature Reserves taking part in the  "FREE access" initiative. The following Reserves will offer free access:

  • Commando Drift Provincial Nature Reserve
  • East London Coast Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Mpofu - Fort Fordyce Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Mkhambathi Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Oviston Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Thomas Baines Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Waters Meeting Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Dwesa Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Great Fish River Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Hluleka Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Ongeluksnek Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Silaka Provincial Nature Reserve
  • Tsolwana Provincial Nature Reserve

Eastern Cape Tourism announced on Facebook and Twitter that all 16 provincial Nature Reserves in the Eastern Cape managed by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) are offering free access for one week (Monday to Sunday) at the end of October 2020. The "FREE access" initiative starts on 26 October 2020 and ends on 01 November 2020.
