Airlink launches Lanseria–Harare flights from November 2026

Travellers heading to Zimbabwe will soon have another way to reach Harare. From 15 November 2026, South African regional airline Airlink will introduce a new scheduled service between Lanseria International Airport (HLA), northwest of Johannesburg, and Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE) in Harare.

The route is particularly significant because it will be the first-ever scheduled airline service between Lanseria and Zimbabwe's capital, giving passengers an alternative to departing from the busier O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB).

Flight schedule

Airlink will operate the route three times a week using a 98-seat Embraer E190 aircraft, featuring 6 Business Class and 92 Economy Class seats

• Monday, Thursday, Saturday: Lanseria 07:00 > 08:40 Harare
• Wednesday, Friday, Sunday: Harare 17:45 > 19:25 Lanseria

The Embraer E190 offers a comfortable cabin layout with no middle seats, meaning every passenger enjoys either a window or aisle seat.

Why this new route matters

Johannesburg–Harare is one of Southern Africa's busiest international air routes, carrying substantial business, family and leisure travel throughout the year.

Until now, scheduled flights between the two cities have operated exclusively from O.R. Tambo International Airport. The addition of Lanseria gives travellers more flexibility when choosing departure airports and could prove particularly useful for those based closer to Johannesburg's western suburbs.

For visitors exploring Zimbabwe, Harare is often the starting point for journeys to destinations such as Mana Pools National Park, Eastern Highlands, Lake Kariba or the Great Zimbabwe ruins, while many travellers also continue onwards to Victoria Falls by domestic flight or road.

Tickets for the new Lanseria–Harare service are already on sale, with the inaugural flight scheduled for 15 November 2026.

South Africa: FlySafair grows domestic network with new routes!

South Africa’s leading low-cost carrier, FlySafair, has announced another network expansion that will make domestic air travel even more convenient. Starting on 01 November 2025, the airline will launch two new direct services from Lanseria International Airport (HLA) in Johannesburg to the Eastern Cape. Travellers from Gauteng will soon be able to fly directly to King Phalo Airport (ELS) in East London with six weekly flights, as well as to Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport (PLZ) in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) with seven weekly flights. These new connections are designed to enhance regional accessibility and provide more affordable travel options for both business and leisure passengers.

The expansion does not stop there. From 02 October 2025, FlySafair will also begin operating flights between Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town and Eastgate Airport (HDS) in Hoedspruit, Limpopo. This new route, which will run three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, opens up seamless access to the Greater Kruger National Park and one of South Africa’s most iconic safari destinations. In addition, the airline will increase its service between Cape Town and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) in Mbombela to daily flights from 01 October 2025, giving travellers even more flexibility when planning trips to the Lowveld and surrounding private game reserves.

With these latest additions, FlySafair is reinforcing its position as one of South Africa’s most connected low-cost airlines, offering passengers greater convenience, improved regional connectivity and easier access to both coastal cities and world-class safari destinations.

South Africa: FlySafair to introduce a new daily service between Johannesburg <> George!

South African regional low cost-carrier FlySafair is set to introduce scheduled daily flights between Lanseria International Airport (HLA) in Johannesburg and George Airport (GRJ) in George, often referred to as the "Capital of the Garden Route". Effective 14 March 2025, the airline will operate daily return flights to the second largest city in the Western Cape.
Flights will depart Lanseria International Airport at 10:00 and arrive in George at 12:20. The return flights will depart George at 12:55 and arrive at Lanseria International Airport at 14:55.

Lanseria International Airport (HLA) is a privately owned airport located north of Randburg and Sandton to the northwest of Johannesburg. It serves as a convenient alternative to the larger O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), catering primarily to domestic flights and a few regional destinations.

South Africa: Kulula returns to Lanseria International Airport (HLA)!

South African low-cost airline Kulula[.com] has announced that it will restart its operations at Lanseria International Airport (HLA) from 01 April 2021. The airline will fly between Lanseria and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town, and Lanseria and King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban. Similar to the re-introduction of its other routes, Kulula[.com] will commence with a limited schedule, adding additional frequencies over the next couple of months. South Africa: FlySafair to launch a new service between Durban and Lanseria (Johannesburg)!

South African low-cost airline FlySafair has announced plans to launch scheduled domestic services between King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban and Lanseria International Airport (HLA) in Johannesburg. The airline will initially operate two daily return flights from 01 June 2020. Ten days later, from 11 June 2020, FlySafair is planning to increase the number of flights between Durban and Johannesburg (Lanseria) to four daily return flights. Privately owned Lanseria International Airport (HLA) is located north of Randburg and Sandton to the north west of Johannesburg.

Johannesburg: Lanseria International Airport switched the drop off and pick up zone around!

Privately owned Lanseria International Airport (HLA) in Johannesburg has switched the drop off and pick up zone around. The entrance to the drop-off and pick up zone has moved to what is used to be the exit. The exit is now by the bridge of what used to be the entrance. This change was necessitated by the need to alleviate congestion and provide all passengers and airport users with a friendly convenient zone. No buses are allowed to drop off and pick up in the main zone. The buses now have a dedicated pick-up and drop off zone of their own by Gate 3.

Mango to launch flights between Lanseria International Airport and Zanzibar!

Mango, the state-owned South African low-cost airline and subsidiary of South African Airways, is set to launch a new service between Lanseria International Airport (HLA) in Johannesburg and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) on the island of Zanzibar. Effective 29 June 2019, the airline will operate one weekly return flight on board a Boeing Next Generation 737-800 on Saturdays from Lanseria to Zanzibar. Fligths will depart Lanseria at 09:50 and arrive on Zanzibar at 14:15. The return flight will depart Zanzibar at 15:05 and will arrive at Lanseria International Airport (HLA) at 18:05. This is in addition to Mango's flights currently being operated from O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), also located in Johannesburg. The new service between Lanseria and Zanzibar will more than likely be scheduled according to seasonality depending on the uptake by travellers.

Mango to launch flights between Lanseria International Airport and Port Elizabeth!

Mango, the state-owned South African low-cost airline and subsidiary of South African Airways, is set to launch a new service between Lanseria International Airport (HLA) in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth International Airport (PLZ) in Port Elizabeth. Effective 11 July 2019, the airline will operate twice daily return flights to Port Elizabeth. Flights will depart Lanseria International Airport (HLA) at 08:45 (JE575) and 15:45 (JE591) and will arrive in Port Elizabeth at 10:20 (JE575) and 17:25 (JE591) respectively. The return flights will depart Port Elizabeth at 10:55 (JE576) and 18:00 (JE592) and will arrive at Lanseria International Airport (HLA) at 12:35 (JE576) and 19:50 (JE592) respectively.

FlySafair to commence flights to & from Lanseria International Airport!

South African low-cost carrier FlySafair has announced that they will beginn operating flights to and from Lanseria International Airport (HLA) in Johannesburg from August 2016. Flights to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town will commence on 01 August 2016, while flights to George Airport (GRJ) in George will start on 05 August 2016. FlySafair will operate two flights per day (three from 30 Oct 2016) between Lanseria International Airport and Cape Town and one daily flight between Lanseria International Airport and George.

Mango to launch flights between Lanseria <> Durban!

South African low-cost airline Mango is set to introduce flights between Lanseria International Airport (HLA) in Gauteng and King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban on 15 October 2015. The airline will operate two flights per day between the two destinations. Flights from Lanseria to Durban will depart at 08:55 and at 18:20, while flights from Durban to Lanseria will depart at 07:50 and at 16:30 respectively.
Mango also announced that it will add an early morning flight to its service to Cape Town from 15 October 2015, bringing the total number of flights between Lanseria and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to four.

Johannesburg: Lanseria International Airport launches uncapped WiFi!

Lanseria International Airport (HLA), located north of Randburg and Sandton to the north west of Johannesburg, has partnered with South African Internet service provider, MWEB, to offer uncapped WiFi to its visitors. The service, which is available for all smartphone mobile devices, laptops and tablets through MWEB WiFi zones, covers about 97% of the airport. Lanseria's WiFi is free for the first 30 minutes, but travellers have to pay R10 an hour after that.

South Africa: New domestic airline "FlyGoAir" to launch service in November 2012

update (07 Feb 2013): FlyGoAir has not commenced operations so far, except for its inaugural flight in December 2012.

Little is known about FlyGoAir, a new South African carrier that will commence service in November 2012. It is known though, that the airline, which will have its main hub at Lanseria International Airport in Johannesburg, is planning to operate flights on routes that are currently not served by other domestic airlines in South Africa. FlyGoAir's first route will therefore be between Lanseria International Airport and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA). The airline will start operating flights between the two destinations on 26 Nov 2012; one-way flights will be ZAR999pp, inclusive of all taxes. FlyGoAir will, according to news reports, also extend its network to Polokwane and Pietermaritzburg in January 2013. Later in 2013, the carrier is planning to operate flights from Lanseria International Airport to Bloemfontein and George as well as from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) to Cape Town.

Air Botswana to launch flights to new destinations in Southern Africa

The flag carrier of Botswana, Air Botswana, has announced that it will add various new destinations in Southern and East Africa to its network. From 28 Oct 2012 the airline will be operating flights between Gaborone and Cape Town and Lanseria (Johannesburg) in South Africa, between Gaborone and  Lilongwe and Blantyre in Malawi and between Gaborone and Nairobi in Kenya, as well as between Maun and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. The service between Gaborone and Harare (Zimbabwe) will be increased from currently 3 weekly fligths to 4 weekly flights.

Johannesburg: Lanseria International Airport to get a new runway

Johannesburg's Lanseria International Airport is constantly growing and will therefore see the construction of a new runway at a cost of R150-million to improve the airport’s capacity. The construction of the new 45-m-wide and 3-km-long runway will start in the second quarter of 2012. Also planned is the extension of the domestic departure lounge, with a new pier to accommodate increasing passenger numbers. A multi-storey parkade, close to the main terminal building, is also under consideration. Lanseria's car park has already been extended on a number of occasions to cater for the growing demand.

Comair Limited, operator of British Airways in South Africa and kulula.com, is using Lanseria International Airport since a couple of years already and used to have a five-year exclusivity agreement with the airport. Mango, another South African budget arline, commenced flights ex Lanseria in June 2011, while 1time, the third South African budget airline, started using the airport only on 05 March 2012.

South Africa: 1time now operating flights ex Lanseria International Airport (Johannesburg)

update (29 May 2012): South African budget airline 1time has announced that it will be withdrawing all of its flights to and from Lanseria International Airport with effect from 2 June 2012. According to IOL news, the airline wants to consolidate all their local and regional flights from OR Tambo International Airport and concentrate on their African projects that are currently underway. Pending seasonal demand, and commercial viability of the airport, 1time may look at reviewing their Lanseria services in the future.

South African budget airline 1time is now operating flights fom Lanseria International Airport in Gauteng. 1time's maiden flight from the airport took off on 05 March 2012. The airline will operate daily flights between Lanseria <> Cape Town & Lanseria <> Durban. – with arrivals and departures each morning and afternoon/evening.

South African Airways & Mango sign codeshare agreement

South African Airways and its low-cost-partner, Mango, have signed a codeshare agreement for flights between Johannesburg's Lanseria International Airport and Cape Town, so that SAA passengers can now book codeshare flights operated by Mango between the two destinations.
Mango is currently operating an average of three weekly return flights between Lanseria and Cape Town.
South African Airways and Mango already sigend a codeshare agreement for flights between Cape Town and Durban in late 2010.
All of Mango's fleet is leased from and serviced as well as maintained by South African Airways.

Comair to launch Gaborone & Maputo flights ex Lanseria (Johannesburg)

Comair Limited,  operator of British Airways in South Africa and kulula.com, will start operation scheduled flights from Johannesburg's Lanseria Airport to Maputo in Mozambique and Gaborone in Botswana from 01 September 2011. British Airways will initially be offering eight return flights per week between Lanseria and Maputo and seven return flights per week to and from Gaborone with additional flights to both destinations being added before the end of the 2011.

British Airways routes from Lanseria to Gaborone and Maputo postponed

Comair Limited, operator of British Airways in South Africa and kulula.com, confirmed that the imminent commencement of its flights from Lanseria (Johannesburg) to Maputo in Mozambique and to Gaborone in Botswana on 30 May 2011 has been postponed, pending the finalisation of commercial terms with Lanseria International Airport, and a commitment from Lanseria to commence the building of a new runway and upgrade of the airport infrastructure.
Comair is now set to commence operations on the Maputo and Gaborone routes from 01 September 2011, and bookings for these new destinations are currently open for sale.
Customers that have already booked and paid for their flights on these routes are being contacted and have been provided with the option for a full refund, or to change their flights to a date on or after 01 September 2011.
