Airlink to increase flights between Johannesburg <> Mthatha!

South African regional carrier Airlink will re-introduce its midday flight between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and Mthatha Airport (UTT) in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape on 7 March 2019. The additional midday flights will be operated Mondays to Fridays and will depart from Johannesburg at 12:00 and arrive in Mthatha at 13:15. The return flight will depart from Mthatha at 13:35 and arrive in Johannesburg at 14:50. The service will operated on board an Embraer 135 regional jet.
Airlink resumed services between
OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg  and Mthatha Airport (UTT) in Mthatha on 19 February 2019 after the Mthatha Airport's brief suspension by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) in January 2019.

Ethiopian Mozambique Airlines (EMA) launched flights between Maputo <> Vilankulo!

According to various sources, Ethiopian Mozambique Airlines (EMA), a subsidiary of Ethiopian Airlines in Mozambique, has launched scheduled flights between Maputo International Airport (MPM) in Maputo and Vilankulo Airport (VNX) in Vilankulo (or Vilanculos) in Mozambique's coastal Inhambane Province on 03 March 2019. The airline operates two weekly flights on Sundays and Tuesdays between the two destinations. Vilankulo (or Vilanculos) is the gateway to the famous Bazaruto Archipelago, a group of six islands in Mozambique known for its sandy beaches, coral reefs, and opportunities for surfing and fishing.

Lion's Head (Cape Town): The newly installed infrastructure will remain closed off! [update]

update (05 March 2019): South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that the sections in question (see tweet below) are not open to the public. SANParks is still assessing the work that has been conducted. [more info]

After the reopening of Lion's Head in Cape Town's Table Mountain National Park on 01 March 2019, South African National Parks (SANParks) has received concerns from their visitors - see tweet below -  around the safety of some of the newly installed infrastructure. SANParks is now taking the necessary steps to rectify this situation. Until such time that safe passage can be guaranteed, the newly installed infrastructure will remain closed off and notices will remain in place.


Air Seychelles to commence daily flights between Seychelles <> Johannesburg!

The national airline of the Republic of Seychelles, Air Seychelles, is set to commence daily services between Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) in Victoria on the island of Mahé and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 03 June 2019. The additional frequency will be operated on Mondays by the airline's two class Airbus A320 aircraft featuring 16 business and 120 economy class seats.

Zimbabwe: National Railways of Zimbabwe has increased fares on its inter-city passenger trains!

National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), the parastatal railway of Zimbabwe, has increased passenger fares on its inter-city passenger trains, which connect Bulawayo <> Victoria Falls, Bulawayo <> Harare, Mutare <> Harare (all daily) as well as Bulawayo <> Chiredzi and Bulawayo <> Chikwalakwala (all weekly). According to NRZ Public Relations Manager, Mr Nyasha Maravanyika, the increase is due to rising operational expenses. The increase affects all the three classes with effect from 25 February 2019.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Shops at main rest camps to close during the day at the end of March 2019 due to stocktaking!

According to South African National Parks' (SANParks), stocktacking will commence at the shops in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park's main rest camps in March 2019. The operating hours of the shops at Mata-Mata Rest Camp, Nossob Rest Camp and Twee Rivieren Rest Camp will therefore change between 25 March 2019 and 27 March 2019.
  • Mata-Mata Rest Camp: Shop will be open from 07:30 - 09:00 and again from 16:00 - 19:30 on 25 March 2019
  • Nossob Rest Camp: Shop will be open from 07:30 - 09:00 and again from 16:00 - 19:30 on 26 March 2019
  • Twee Rivieren Rest Camp: Shop will be open from 07:30 - 09:00 and again from 16:00 - 19:30 on 27 March 2019
The shops will be closed from 09:00 until 16:00 on the respective dates.

Kruger National Park: The R536 road between Hazyview and Kruger National Park is partially closed due to flooding! [update]

update (01 March 2019): The R536 road has been re-opened, but is rather "muddy".

update (01 March 2019): Guests travelling to/from Kruger National Park should avoid using Phabeni Gate and Paul Kruger Gate until further notice. South African National Parks (SANParks) advises visitors to Kruger National Park to enter/exit the Park via Numbi Gate or Malelane Gate.

update (01 March 2019): The R536 road between Hazyview and Tshabalala Village is temporarily closed due to an overflowing bridge in the Tshabalala area (outside Phabeni Gate).

South African National Parks (SANParks) just informed the public via twitter and facebook that the R536 road between Hazyview and Mkhuhlu is currently closed due an overflow caused by the ongoing rain. This affects routes to Kruger National Park's Paul Kruger Gate and Phabeni Gate. SANParks advises travellers to use alternative routes. The section of the R536 road will remain closed until further notice. We'll keep you posted!
