update (05 March 2019): South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that the sections in question (see tweet below) are not open to the public. SANParks is still assessing the work that has been conducted. [more info]
After the reopening of Lion's Head in Cape Town's Table Mountain National Park on 01 March 2019, South African National Parks (SANParks) has received concerns from their visitors - see tweet below - around the safety of some of the newly installed infrastructure. SANParks is now taking the necessary steps to rectify this situation. Until such time that safe passage can be guaranteed, the newly installed infrastructure will remain closed off and notices will remain in place.
update (01 March 2019): Lion's Head reopens today. The footpath on the north facing slope from the Kramat leading up to the spiral trail will remain closed for further rehabilitation as a result of the fire event in February 2019. (see map). South African National Parks (SANParks) has closed many illegal trails as a part of rehabilitation efforts and asks that visitors respect these closures and stay on the demarcated trail.
South African National Parks (SANParks) has informed the public of an extended closure of Lion's Head in Cape Town's Table Mountain National Park to address safety and ecological integrity concerns. This is a result of the fire on 27 to 29 January 2019 that damaged the infrastructure on the mountain, including footpath segments not included in the ongoing maintenance project (paths around the Kramat, Top Road entrance and Kloof Road entrance). Lion's Head is now expected to re-open for access on 01 March 2019; the re-opening was originally scheduled for the 15 February 2019. Please note that the closure of the mountain applies to all recreational activities not only hiking.
update (29 January 2019): The reopening of Lion's Head to the public has been pushed back due to the fires on 27/28 January 2019 that damaged the infrastructure on the mountain. The reopening was originally scheduled for the 15 February 2019. As of yet, South African National Parks (SANParks) is unable to determine a new date for the reopening of Lion's Head. We'll keep you posted!
The popular Lion's Head spiral hiking trail in Cape Town's Table Mountain National Park will be fully closed from 07 January 2019 until 15 February 2019 due to much needed maintenance. No access will be permitted to hikers or runners via the track entrance along Signal Hill Drive. This includes the restriction on access after sunset and before sunrise. Due to the maintenance in progress South African National Parks (SANParks) cannot guarantee the safe passage of visitors along the path way and hence the entire trail will be closed. Signal Hill will remain open to the public as a viewing point.
