Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Nossob Rest Camp swimming pool temporarily closed for upgrades

Travellers planning a stay at Nossob Rest Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park should note that the camp’s swimming pool will be temporarily closed for essential upgrades from Monday, 11 May 2026.

According to South African National Parks (SANParks), the closure is expected to last for approximately three weeks while improvement works are carried out at the popular rest camp facility.

The upgrades are aimed at enhancing the overall visitor experience and ensuring improved amenities for future guests staying in this remote and iconic wilderness destination along South Africa’s border with Botswana.

Nossob Rest Camp remains open to visitors during this period, with accommodation, game drives and other facilities continuing to operate as normal. Travellers visiting the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park during the cooler winter season are advised to plan accordingly, especially families and guests who typically make use of the swimming pool during midday breaks between safari activities.

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is one of Southern Africa’s premier wildlife destinations, renowned for its dramatic red dunes, predator sightings and exceptional desert-adapted wildlife experiences.

Upgrades coming to Nossob Rest Camp in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: What visitors should know

Travellers planning a Kalahari safari should note that South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed scheduled upgrade and maintenance work at Nossob Rest Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The project forms part of ongoing investment to improve infrastructure and visitor comfort in one of Southern Africa’s most iconic wilderness destinations.

Work is expected to begin around 25 February 2026 and continue for approximately four months. Planned improvements include upgrades to campsite ablution facilities, premium campsites, and riverfront units, ensuring better long-term standards for future guests.

Importantly, all existing bookings remain valid, and accommodation availability will not be affected during the upgrade period. Visitors staying at Nossob Rest Camp during these months should, however, expect construction activity, maintenance vehicles, and occasional noise, which park management aims to keep to a minimum.

These enhancements are part of SANParks’ broader strategy to maintain high-quality facilities while protecting the exceptional wilderness experience that makes the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park such a sought-after safari destination.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Upgrade projects announced for Nossob Rest Camp!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that a series of upgrading projects will soon be carried out at Nossob Rest Camp, one of the most popular camps in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The improvements are scheduled to begin on 12 September 2025 and are designed to enhance both visitor comfort and overall camp facilities.
The swimming pool at Nossob Rest Camp will receive upgrades to its fence and shade structures, but guests can rest assured that the pool will remain open during the work. Additional projects include the installation of wooden latte panels between units 1 - 4 for improved privacy, new information nodes at the bird hide for a more interactive wildlife-viewing experience, and the introduction of portable potty dumping facilities at the camping site ablution block - a welcome addition for self-drive campers.

Situated deep in the heart of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Nossob Rest Camp is famous for its remote setting and outstanding wildlife encounters. The camp lies on the banks of the usually dry Nossob Riverbed and is particularly popular with visitors eager to spot predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. Birdwatchers will also find Nossob Rest Camp a delight, with the nearby bird hide offering excellent opportunities to observe raptors and smaller desert-adapted species.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Nossob Rest Camp switches to 24-hour solar power!

The South African National Parks (SANParks) management of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has announced that the Nossob Rest Camp now also has 24-hour electricity supply. SANParks switched from generator power for 17 hours per day to solar power for 24 hours per day. In October 2024, the Mata-Mata Rest Camp switched to 24-hour solar power.

Situated along the Nossob Riverbed, the Nossob Rest Camp is approximately 160 km north of Twee Rivieren Rest Camp, the southern entrance gate to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The camp has a shop, a fuel station and a swimming pool. While the Nossob Rest Camp itself is accessible by 2WD vehicles, many roads and trails are better suited for 4x4 vehicles, especially after rain.

The camp is surrounded by tree savannah and is famous for spectacular predator sightings. Nossob Rest Camp has a reception, swimming pool, predator information centre, shop and fuel facilities. A generator provides electricity for 16.5 hrs per day. No phone reception is available at the Rest Camp. Nossob Rest Camp is 3,5 hour drive from Twee Rivieren Rest Camp, the largest rest camp and administrative headquarters of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Roads north of Nossob Rest Camp unaccessible for normal sedan vehicles until further notice!

The Management of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has announced that the roads north of Nossob Rest Camp are curently unaccessible for normal sedan vehicles until further notice. This is due to a significant amount of rain Nossob Rest Camp and the surrounding area received overnight (18mm at Nossob Rest Camp). We'll keep you posted!

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: No power supply at two rest camps for three days at the end of August 2023!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that Twee Rivieren Rest Camp and Nossob Rest Camp in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park will be without power for some time at the end of August 2023. This is due to the yearly maintenance of the transformers at Twee Rivieren Rest Camp and the mini substations ("minisubs") at Nossob Rest Camp. The maintenance will take place from 28 August 2023 to 31 August 2023 between 07:30 and 17:00. All related services will be affected as follows:

• 29 August 2023: Power Shut down at Nossob Rest Camp
• 30 August 2023: Power Shut down at Twee Rivieren Rest Camp
• 31 August 2023: Reception at Twee Rivieren Rest Camp will be affected

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: WiFi at Nossob Rest Camp temporarily not available! [update]

Nossob Rest Camp is situated within the dry riverbed of the Nossob River. The camp is surrounded by tree savannah and is famous for spectacular predator sightings. Facilities include a reception, chalets, camping, swimming pool, shop and a predator information centre. Fuel is also available. Electricity (240v, 15amp) is available daily from 05:00 to 23:00.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Park shops to close during the day at the end of March 2022!

According to a posting by Regional Communications Manager: Arid Parks at South African National Parks (SANParks), Genevieve Maasdorp, in the SANParks - Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park facebook group, financial year end stocktaking needs to be performed at all shops in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The operating hours of the shops at Mata-Mata Rest Camp, Nossob Rest Camp and Twee Rivieren Rest Camp will therefore change between 28 March 2022 and 31 March 2022.

• Mata-Mata Rest Camp: Shop will be open from 07:30 - 09:00 and again from 15:00 - 19:00 on 28 March 2022
• Nossob Rest Camp: Shop will be open from 07:30 - 09:00 and again from 15:00 - 19:00 on 29 March 2022
• Twee Rivieren Rest Camp: Shop will be open from 15:00 - 19:00 on 31 March 2022

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Shop facility at Nossob Rest Camp to close for essential maintenance work!

The shop facility at Nossob Rest Camp in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park will undergo essential maintenance work for the duration of August 2019 to November 2019. As of 05 August 2019, the shop will be relocated to one of the residential units in Nossob Rest Camp. The Rest Camp's reception will provide visitors of the location and directions to get there upon arrival. During the maintenance, only the most essential items will be available for purchase at the shop. The management of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park will try to provide card facilities at the shop. However this can not be guaranteed due to possible disruption of communications. The work that needs to be conducted at the existing shop facility will be conducted between 08:00 and 16:00. Please note that the shops located at Twee Rivieren Rest Camp and Mata Mata Rest Camp will not be affected.
Further note that the remaining four units (numbers 11 - 14) at Kalahari Tented Camp in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park will also be renovated and completed between August 2019 and November 2019. Work will also be conducted between 08:00 and 16:00 daily.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Shops at main rest camps to close during the day at the end of March 2019 due to stocktaking!

According to South African National Parks' (SANParks), stocktacking will commence at the shops in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park's main rest camps in March 2019. The operating hours of the shops at Mata-Mata Rest Camp, Nossob Rest Camp and Twee Rivieren Rest Camp will therefore change between 25 March 2019 and 27 March 2019.

• Mata-Mata Rest Camp: Shop will be open from 07:30 - 09:00 and again from 16:00 - 19:30 on 25 March 2019
• Nossob Rest Camp: Shop will be open from 07:30 - 09:00 and again from 16:00 - 19:30 on 26 March 2019
• Twee Rivieren Rest Camp: Shop will be open from 07:30 - 09:00 and again from 16:00 - 19:30 on 27 March 2019
  

The shops will be closed from 09:00 until 16:00 on the respective dates.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: "Nossob Still Cam" in Nossob Rest Camp to be replaced in March 2019! [update]

update (01 April 2019): The "Nossob Still Cam" in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is still out of order!

The "Nossob Still Cam", a webcam located in the Nossob Rest Camp in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa's Northern Cape, is currently out of order. According to South African National Parks (SANParks) Regional Communications Manager (Arid Parks), Genevieve Maasdorp, a new webcam will be installed during March 2019. We'll keep posted.
