United Airlines to become first airline to fly nonstop between Washington D.C. <> Cape Town!

United Airlines, one of the major American airlines, is set to become the first airline to provide nonstop roundtrip service between Washington D.C. and Cape Town in South Africa. The U.S. Department of Transportation granted the airline three weekly direct flights between Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington D.C. and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town, which will commence on 17 (18?) November 2022 (subject to approval by the South Africa Government). Tickets are already on sale. United Airlines' new flights will connect Cape Town to 55 U.S. cities, representing more than 92% of the U.S. travel demand. The new flights will also allow customers to connect in Cape Town to other points in South Africa, and to other countries in the southern region of the African continent with United Airlines' South African based partner Airlink and their Cape Town hub. 


United Airlines will fly a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on the new route between Washington D.C. and Cape Town, which features 48 lie-flat business class seats, 21 United Premium Plus® seats and 188 economy seats.
United Airlines started seasonal service from New York/Newark to Cape Townin 2019 and expanded to year-round service in 2022. United Airlines has more flights to South Africa than any other North American airline.

United Airlines to launch non-stop flights between Washington D.C. <> Cape Town! [update #2]

update (18 July 2022): The US Department of Transport and the South African Government have agreed to increase the number of flights between the US and South Africa from 21 to 23 weekly flights. This allows both Delta Air Lines and United Airlines to operate flights to Cape Town. The airlines previously had applied for thrice-weekly flights to the Mother City. Delta and United now have extra flights for their winter season –  but they must both launch their flights within 90 days of 17 November 2022.

update (19 May 2022): United Airlines and its competitor Delta Air Lines are both planning to launch direct flights to Cape Town. United Airlines is set to launch flights from Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington D.C., while Delta wants to fly from Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in Atlanta to the Mother City. According to the US-South Africa Air Transport Agreement, there is only one last remaining flight frequency between the US and South Africa allowed, so both airlines are currently battling with the authorities for the availabe slot. Subject to approval by the US Department of Transportation, the airline is set to operate a three weekly year-round service between Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington D.C. and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town from 17 November 2022. United Airlines' proposed flight will depart Washington D.C. at 18:30 on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and arrive in Cape Town the following day at 16:15. On the return, the proposed flight will depart Cape Town at 21:00 on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundasy and arrive in  Washington D.C. the following day at 06:00. Flights will be operated on board a 257 seat Boeing 787-9. We'll keep you posted!

South African Airways to streamline service to Washington, D.C.!

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways, will adjust its service between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and Dulles International Airport IAD) in Washington, D.C.. As of 05 September 2019, the airline will operate all flights to and from Washington, D.C. via Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra (Ghana). The routing via Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) in Dakar (Senegal) will be terminated. South African Airways will also increase the service via Accra from the current five to seven weekly fligths. The flights will be operated on board a mix of Airbus A330-200 and Airbus A330-300 aircraft. South African Airways' last flight via Dakar will be operated on 01 September 2019.

South African Airways increased flights between Washington, D.C. (USA) <> Accra (Ghana)!

South Africa's flag carrier, South African Airways, has increased its nonstop service between Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington, D.C. and Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra, Ghana, and onwards to OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, South Africa, to five days weekly. The airline's increase of flights on the route will also serve to support the partnership with Ghanaian airline company Africa World Airlines by offering seamless connections between Accra and additional destinations in West Africa including Lagos Abuja (Nigeria), Monrovia (Liberia) and Freetown (Sierra Leone).
South African Airways offers the only nonstop flight between
Washington, D.C. and Ghana and offers travellers convenient connections to and from over 100 cities across the U.S. and Canada through its Star Alliance partner, United Airlines via Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington, D.C.. In addition, South African Airways will continue to operate flights between Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington, D.C. and Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) in Dakar, Senegal and onwards to Johannesburg, two days per week.

South African Airways and Porter Airlines (Canada) signed new interline agreement

Great news for all travellers who are looking to travel between Canada and Africa. Canada-based Porter Airlines and South African Airways (SAA) announced a new interline agreement, which allows travellers to purchase tickets and access easy connections between 12 Porter Airlines' Canadian destinations and South African Airways’s 44 African destinations via Washington, DC (Dulles). The agreement took effect on 17 September 2012, with tickets between the two airlines now available for purchase.
South African Airways offers non-stop service from Washington, DC (Dulles) to Dakar, Senegal, with a continuation to Johannesburg in South AfricaPorter Airlines' service between Washington, DC (Dulles) and Toronto's City Airport opens up 12 destinations in Canada for SAA’s passengers including Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Thunder Bay, Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Windsor, St. John’s, Halifax and Moncton.

Ethiopian Airlines to operate daily flights with the Dreamliner to Washington D.C.

update (20 Sept 2012): Ethiopian Airlines has again revised its planned Addis Ababa <> Washington D.C. schedule. First flight is now scheduled on 23 Sept 2012, followed by 25 Sept 2012 and 29 Sept 2012. From 01 Oct 2012, the airline operates 787 aircraft on daily basis.

update (18 Sept 2012): Ethiopian Airlines is postponing planned Boeing 787 Dreamliner operation between Addis Ababa and Washington D.C. (USA) from 20 Sept 2012 to 01 Oct 2012.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IATA: IAD) in Washington D.C. (USA) will be Ethiopian Airlines' debut Boeing 787 Dreamliner destination. From 20 Sept 2012 the Ethiopian flag carrier will be operating daily flights between its main hub at Bole International Airport (IATA: ADD) in Addis Ababa and Washington D.C..
Ethiopian Airlines will take delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner on 14 August 2012 in Seattle, Washington (USA). Two days later, on 16 August 2012, the Dreamliner will make its first touchdown at Bole International Airport (IATA: ADD) in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). The airline is the first airline from Africa, Europe, Americas and Middle East to take delivery of the Dreamliner.
