Kenya: Airspace closure on 24 & 26 July 2015!

update (24 July 2015): Kenya Airways has released an update regarding the airspace closure.



Kenya's airspace will be closed few hours on 24 July 2015 and on 26 July 2015 due to the visit of the President of The United States Barack Obama to Kenya. Kenya Airways expects some disruptions to its flight schedule during this time and has rescheduled some flights departing from or arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi during the airspace closure time. Please contact Kenya Airways in case a flight you are booked on is affected.

The airspace closure times are:
  • 24 July 2015: 07:45pm to 08:35pm
  • 26 July 2015: 05:05pm to 05:45pm

President Obama's schedule in South Africa & Tanzania (28 June 2013 - 02 July 2013)

The President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, and his family will be visiting west, southern and east Africa from 26 June 2013 to 02 July 2013. After a two-day-visit in Senegal, the Obamas will be in South Africa from Friday, 28 June 2013, until Monday, 01 July 2013 and in Tanzania from 01 July until 02 July 2013. Busy times ahead in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Dar Es Salaam... Anyway - according to the official briefing by Ben Rhodes, Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications and Speech-writing in the White House, the Obamas will have the following schedule in South Africa and in Tanzania:

Friday, 28 June 2013
Saturday, 29 June 2013 (Pretoria & Johannesburg)
  • bilateral meeting with South Africa's President Jacob Zuma, followed by a press conference (Pretoria)
  • Obama will host a town hall meeting at the University of Johannesburg in Soweto
  • Obama will meet the Chairwoman of the African Union, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma
  • The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, will have tea with Thobeka Madiba-Zuma, wife of President Zuma
  • Mrs. Michelle Obama will meet high school kids at the Sci Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg (Corner of Miriam Makeba & President Street)
  • Obamas will be at the offical dinner hosted by President Zuma
Sunday, 30 June 2013 (Cape Town)
Monday, 01 July 2013 (Dar Es Salaam)
  • flight to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
  • Obama will have a bilateral meeting with the President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete, followed by a joint press conference
  • Obama will speak to a group of business leaders and CEOs from the United States and across Africa
  • Michelle Obama will have tea with Mrs. Salma Kikwete, the wife of the President of Tanzania
  • Michelle Obama will visit the memorial to the embassy bombing at the US embassy (686 Old Bagamoyo Road, Msasani). 
  • Michelle Obama will attend a performance by the Baba wa Watoto troupe, which serves underprivileged boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 18 years old.
    Obamas will attend an official dinner hosted by the President of Tanzania
Tuesday, 02 July 2013 (Dar Es Salaam)
  • Obama will be going to the US embassy (686 Old Bagamoyo Road, Msasani) and will also be laying a wreath at the sight of the memorial to the embassy bombings.
  • Obama will visit the Ubungo power plant and held a speech there
  • Michelle Obama will participate in an African First Ladies' Summit (Investing in Women Strengthening Africa) in Kivukoni which is going to be hosted by the George W. Bush Institute, including Laura Bush. At the summit, first ladies from across the continent (Zuma's wife Nompumelelo Zuma will be there #justsaying) will gather to focus on the important role that first ladies play in promoting women's education, health and economic empowerment.
