Namibia: The greatest wildlife recovery story ever told (WWF)

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), an international non-governmental organisation working on issues regarding the conservation, research and restoration of the environment, currently celebrates Namibia's achievements in wildlife management and has published three short films, which are telling the greatest wildlife recovery story ever told. The three films are explaning why Namibia's communities are committed to protecting wildlife, why the nation adresses habitat conservation and protection of natural resources in its constitution and what the future of responsible tourism in Namibia looks like. Namibia receives WWF's "Gift to the Earth Award"!

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) has recognised Namibia for its outstanding conservation achievements. The global conservation organisation has, for the second time, honoured the country with the Gift to the Earth Award for its conservation successes. The prestigious award was received by President Hifikepunye Pohamba on behalf of Namibia during the official opening ceremony of the 10th Adventure Travel World Summit in Windhoek on 26 Oct 2013.


The Gift to the Earth is WWF's most prestigious Award for governments, companies or public sector institutions. More than 100 Gift to the Earth have been recognized since 1996, including more than 60 major commitments by governments throughout the world.

(Mobile) gaming for good: "WWF Rhino Raid" for iOS & Android

The World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) South Africa and Flint Sky Interactive have teamed up to develop a mobile game that delivers anti-poaching messaging and facts about rhinos. WWF Rhino Raid is an exciting sidescrolling runner that tells the story of Rad the Rhino and his quest to save his species by outwitting the poachers. The game, which is already available on iTunes and will come out for Android phones on 23 April 2013, costs US$1.99 (or equivalent). By buying the game, you are supporting WWF South Africa to save South Africa’s rhinos through the organisation's numerous rhino conservation projects and counter poaching initiatives.

Video: Black rhinos moved to new home by helicopter

A group of 19 critically endangered black rhinos have been moved from South Africa's Eastern Cape to a new range in the Limpopo province to encourage increased breeding and population growth. The location is the seventh new habitat established by the WWF's Black Rhino Range Expansion Project. Thx to WWF South Africa and greenrenaissance.co.za for the footage!

Video: The African rhino poaching crisis

To raise awareness of today's 2nd World Rhino Day (22 Sept 2011), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has produced the following video. Please spread the word and share the video on your facebook page, your blog or website.



South Africa has lost at least 287 rhinos in 2011, so far, including 16 or more critically endangered black rhinos. A majority of the poaching incidents have occurred in the world famous Kruger National Park, but privately owned rhinos have also been targeted. Law enforcement officials have made over 165 arrests so far during the year, and some convicted poachers have been sentenced to up to 12 years in prison.

Nearly 200 rhinos killed in the first six month of 2011 in South Africa

According to WWF International, South Africa lost 193 rhinos in the first six months of the year 2011, with 126 of them killed in Kruger National Park. South African authorities have made 123 arrests so far, with six convictions, for poaching in 2011, adding to last year’s 165 arrests and four convictions, the conservation group said. Swaziland, which borders Mozambique and South Africa, lost its first rhino to poaching in almost 20 years in June 2011.

22 September 2010 - "Make Noise for Rhinos Day"

WWF South Africa declared the 22 September 2010 as the "Make Noise for Rhinos Day" and therefor urged the public to take their vuvuzelas at at 1pm CET on the 22nd and to participate. The day is part of a campaign in September 2010 in which the WWF will be stepping up its support to security efforts in dangerous areas with high rates of poaching and will be seeking public support through awareness-raising events.


Untill today 188 rhino had been poached in South Africa in 2010 already; about 600 rhinos in Africa in total. It is time to act! More on panda.org...
