Namibia's Ministry of Works and Transport has officially opened the rehabilitated 31-kilometre section of Trunk Road 1/7 (B2) between Karibib and Usakos, including the roads through Karibib town. The section lies on the main route between Windhoek and Swakopmund.
The former 6.4-metre road is now 13.4 metres wide, with wider lanes, surfaced shoulders and improved overtaking opportunities. The project also includes strengthened bridges, upgraded drainage and better pedestrian infrastructure in Karibib.
What this means for travellers
For self-drive visitors heading to the coast, or to Erongo destinations such as Spitzkoppe, this stretch should now be safer and more comfortable to drive. The extra width and the surfaced shoulders matter most where holiday traffic, tour vehicles and heavy trucks share the same road.
Karibib and Usakos are both practical stops for fuel, a meal or a break. The improved town roads and pedestrian facilities should make a stop in Karibib a little easier.
The rehabilitation covers only these 31 kilometres, and a better road does not remove the usual risks on Namibian roads. Travellers should still avoid driving at dusk and at night, watch for wildlife and livestock, and keep their distance from trucks. Conditions on other parts of the route can differ, so check the latest road situation before setting off.
