The River Road (R11–R12) in the Richtersveld section of the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park is temporarily closed to all traffic because of rising water levels and flooding from the adjacent river.
South African National Parks (SANParks) says visitors should not attempt to use the River Road (R11–R12) and should follow alternative routes where available. Park safety officials are monitoring the situation, and the road will only reopen once conditions are considered safe. No reopening date has been announced.
The River Road (R11–R12) is an internal route in the remote Richtersveld section, including the area between De Hoop and Richtersberg. |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park's roads are largely unpaved and can be challenging even under normal conditions, with SANParks recommending suitable 4x4 or high-clearance vehicles for the area.
Travellers staying at or travelling towards remote camps should therefore check current road conditions with SANParks before setting out and should not rely solely on GPS navigation for an alternative route.
The closure applies to the River Road (R11–R12); it does not mean that the entire Richtersveld section of the park is closed.
Travellers should not attempt to cross flooded sections of the road. The closure will remain in place until SANParks determines that the route is safe to reopen.
