Video: Kevin Richardson playing football with lions
Kevin Richardson, also known as the "lion whisperer", recently shot a commercial video for Van Gils, a Dutch fashion company. As Van Gils is the official tailor of the KNVB (Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond/Royal Dutch Football Association), Kevin is not only talking about his passion for lions and their uncertain future in the spot, he is also playing football/soccer with them. Johannesburg to host the "Barclays Premier League Live" fan park on 29 & 30 March 2014
Johannesburg will be hosting a two-day English Premier League fan park on 29 & 30 March 2014 at Zoo Lake Sports Club. A total of five matches will be broadcast live on a 100m square screen (the biggest in South Africa). Admission will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with the site opening at 12:00 CAT. "Barclays Premier League Live" will host 12,000 fans each day. Visitors to the event can also take part in free coaching sessions, test their football skills against various English Premier League heroes in the Skill Zone, and get up close to the famous English Premier League trophy. Former Bafana Bafana stars Mark Fish and Lucas Radebe will be there, as well as former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler and ex-Chelsea and France captain Marcel Desailly. English Premier League sponsors and partners Barclays, EA Sports, Nike and Topps will have event stands, as will a number of clubs, including Cardiff City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland.

2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN): Tickets go on sale on 29 Nov 2013
South Africa hosts the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) from 11 January 2014 to 01 February 2014. Tickets for the event, which will be available at Shoprite, Checkers and all Computicket outlets countrywide, go on sale on 29 November 2013 and will cost as little as R40 - up to a maximum of R200. According to Local Organising Committee (LOC) CEO Mvuzo Mbebe, the tickets will be sold in three discount phases, varying from up 20% discount for the 1st Phase (29 Nov 2013 - 05 Jan 2014), and up 15% and 10% for 2nd (06 Jan - 18 Jan 2014) and 3rd phases (19 Jan 2014 - 22 Jan 2014), respectively.

Soccer: South Africa to play Spain in Johannesburg (19 Nov 2013)
Awesome news for all soccer/football fans in South Africa. The current world and European football champions, Spain, will come to South Africa to play a friendly international match against bafana bafana, South Africa's national team. The kick off will be on 19 November 2013 at 21.00 hours at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
The FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City and The Calabash, is the largest stadium in Africa with a capacity of about 95,000 seats. It is located in Nasrec, next to Soweto, west of Johannesburg.

South Africa to host the 2014 African Nations Championship (11 Jan - 01 Feb 2014)
South Africa is hosting the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) from 11 January 2014 to 01 February 2014. The annual CHAN finals feature African national teams made up entirely of players from the domestic leagues of the different countries. Manchester City FC to tour South Africa in July 2013
Great news for football/soccer fans in South Africa. English Premier League club Manchester City FC will tour the country in July 2013 and will be playing matches in Pretoria and Durban as part of the Nelson Mandela Football Invitational. The club will face SuperSport United FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on 14 July (15:00) and AmaZulu FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 18 July 2013 (20:00).
Manchester City FC are set to arrive in Durban on 11 July 2013, where they will begin their training ahead of the two matches.
Tickets for the two matches, priced between R150, R250 and R350, will go on sale at Computicket from 25 June 2013.

Manchester United will be touring South Africa in July 2012. The Red Devils announced that they will begin their pre-season with will a training camp and friendly matches in Durban and Cape Town. Manchester United will play against AmaZulu FC at the 54,000-capacity Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 18 July 2012 (Mandela Day), followed by a fixture against Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town on 21 July 2012.
This will be United’s third visit to South Africa after playing in the Southern African nation in 2006 and 2008. After the tour of South Africa, Manchester United will continue their pre-season preparations with trips to China and Norway.
Tickets for the two matches in Durban and Cape Town will be available from Computicket outlets only.

South Africa: 2013 African Cup of Nations host cities announced
South Africa's Department of Sports and Recreation just announced that the host cities for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations* (Afcon) will be Port Elizabeth/Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality (Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium), Rustenburg (Royal Bafokeng), Durban/eThekwini (Moses Mabhida Stadium) and Nelspruit/Mbombela (Mbombela Stadium). The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2013 Afcon will be played at Johannesburg's Soccer City, also known as FNB Stadium.
The cities of Polokwane, Kimberley, Bloemfontein/Mangaung and Cape Town will host the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The 2013 Afcon will begin on 19 January 2013 and end on 10 February 2013, with 16 teams set to participate. The official draw for the AFCON 2013 finals will take place on 26 October 2012.

South Africa: 2013 Africa Cup of Nations hosting cities to be named on 20 April 2012
update (20 Apr 2012): The Cabinet of the South African government has delayed the decision to announce the country's host cities for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations* until 03 May 2012.
South Africa will host the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations*, but the host cities in South Africa are still not named. Johannesburg, Cape Town, Polokwane, Rustenburg and Nelspruit (Mbombela) as well as Bloemfontein/Mangaung, Port Elizabeth/Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality and Durban/eThekwini are waiting to get confirmed as the hosting cities. It is also still unconfirmed how many cities will eventually stage matches, but, according to reports in the South African media, it seems that seven cities will host matches.
The original plan was to name the hosting cities on 04 April 2012, but after a meeting of the South African Football Association (Safa) National Executive Committee over the last weekend it became public that the announcement of the host cities for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations will only be made on 20 April 2012.
The 16-team tournament will take place from mid-January to mid-February 2013. The winners of the tournament will be representing Africa at the 2013 Fifa Confederations Cup (15–30 June 2013), a prelude to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, in Brazil. We'll keep you posted!

What a great idea - a football that produces "real" energy!
Jessica Lin, Jessica Matthews, Julia Silverman and Hemali Thakkar met in an engineering class at Harvard University back in 2008. All four of them had spent time in different places in Africa and all of them saw kids playing and enjoing football whereever they went. Talking about their experiences Jessica, Jessica, Lin and Hemali somehow got the idea that is must be possible to translate the "positive" energy of football into "real" energy people in the world’s most impoverished areas could actually use to power light in their homes, a fridge, a phone and more. Thats how the idea of the "sOccket", a football with an internal generator, was born.

The ball’s mechanism is similar to those found in shake-to-charge flashlights. When the sOccket rolls, a magnetic slug slides back and forth inside an inductive coil in the ball, generating power that is stored in a capacitor.
After 15 minutes of play, the sOccket ball is currently providing enough energy for 3 hours of LED light, a clean, efficient alternative to kerosene lamps. Kudos, girls! Great project!

The project
The schools we work with are mainly for the poorer children in the local community and they have a love for sports and are very keen and eager to learn. As sports lessons are run in conjunction with ‘life orientation classes’ to encourage self-esteem and leadership along with communication skills, this particular project is not a full time sports coaching project, but part time. However if you use your own initiative to generate sports activity when and where you can or even after school, then we are sure that you will gain so much from this experience, just seeing those happy faces on those enthusiastic children will make it all so worthwhile!
Sports in South Africa are becoming compulsory. Unfortunately many children don't receive a proper sports education at their school, which is why your help is needed. You'll also provide essential education for the school teachers, who'll learn from you and be able to carry on with your coaching assignments once you've left, ensuring some continuity for the children.
You can coach a variety of sports, such as cricket, football, netball and rugby. Although facilities are basic, there is still a lot that you can do. The average class size is between 15 and 40. As this is not a full time sports project and will therefore not fill up your entire timetable, you will have the opportunity to teach other subjects during the day, such as conversational English or any other subjects you may be interested in. If you would rather coach sports full time then we also have another very exciting option for you based in Knysna. nb. the "Sports coaching volunteering" project is not involved with the "Rainbow Chiefs" in the video.

2010 World Cup: Fifth & final ticket sales phase to begin on the 15 April 2010
The fifth and final ticket sales phase of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will start on Thursday, 15 April 2010. A total of 500,000 tickets for 63 matches (including all Host Cities and all knock-out matches except the final) will be made available. About 2.2 Million tickets have been sold so far; 240,000 tickets (85% of which went to South African residents) were sold in the fourth sales phase, which ended on the 07 April 2010.

- 11 ticketing centres across the nine host cities. The centres are open seven days a week from 09:00am until 18:00 local time;
- Approx. 600 FNB branches in South Africa, open five days a week from 09:00am on 15 April 2010; the process is new: you can order tickets, make payment and get ticket confirmation immediately; the actual tickets need to be collected at the FIFA ticketing centres or Shoprite/Checkers sales points;
- The official tournament website www.FIFA.com, starting from 18.00 on 15 April 2010;

South Africa's Dreamfields Project
"My name is Zukisa. My friends call me 'The Wall' – nothing can pass me, even Ronaldo" ... a team of young footballers who call themselves the A-Stars feature in a commercial filmed by Justin Bonello of BBC TV programme "Cooked" in aid of the Dreamfields Project, which uses football for community development in South Africa.
According to Bonello, he was driving back to Cape Town after filming in Somerset West one afternoon last year when something he saw provided a moment of inspiration.
"There were these impromptu soccer matches taking place on the side of the N2," Bonello writes on the Dreamfields Project blog. "I started thinking: 'Would I want my son to play soccer here?' And the answer was no.
"We then started looking for a charity we could partner with."
Bonello got in touch with Dreamfields, shared his vision for a short film – and the crew from Cooked in Africa Films was soon headed for Nyanga township where, under the direction of Corne van Rooyen, they began filming the A-Stars boys.
The result was stunning – and the judges of the M-Net Vuka! Awards agreed. The Vuka! Awards were set up to encourage film companies and ad agencies to make TV commercials for causes close to their hearts. The Dreamfields commercial made it through to the finals of the 2009 competition.
"We decided to put together a positive story with real kids," says Bonello. "We produced it in six hours, with no budget, and made the finals with some of the big boys. Brilliant!"
The Dreamfields Project, brainchild of journalist John Perlman, is using the excitement generated by the 2010 Fifa World Cup to bring soccer fields and equipment – as well as business skills and new social partnerships – to disadvantaged communities across South Africa.
The project, which has already attracted some heavyweight corporate backing, raises money to upgrade existing sports facilities in townships and rural areas, and to build new fields in at least 32 regional soccer centres by the end of 2010.
The organisation also supplies communities with "Dream Bags", each containing 11 footballs and 15 full sets of kit, and works with the government and other organisations to bring coaching and sports management skills programmes to communities.

15 - 22 March 2010 in Durban: Deloitte Street Child World Cup
In March 2010, street children from around the world will be welcomed in Durban, South Africa to compete in the first ever Deloitte Street Child World Cup. Children from nine countries will come together and find their voices through the global language of the game they love. Teams will work with international coaches to express themselves on the football pitch and with specially trained artists who will enable them to tell their stories.
