These 3 Cape Town restaurants made the World’s 100 Best list 2025

Cape Town has once again confirmed its status as South Africa’s culinary capital. In the newly released World’s 100 Best Restaurants 2025 list by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, three top restaurants from Cape Town have been honoured among the world’s finest. 1. La Colombe – Constantia (ranked #55)

Cape Town steakhouse ranked among the world’s best!

Time Out, the renowned global magazine for culture, entertainment, and events, recently surveyed its network of editors and international writers about their favourite spots for a steak in their city. Among the standout recommendations, Iron Steak and Bar in Cape Town earned the impressive title of the sixth best steak restaurant in the world. South Africa: Africa's first "Time Out Market" to open in Cape Town in November 2023!

The Time Out Group has annouced the opening date of the first "Time Out Market" in Africa. The "Time Out Market Cape Town" is set to open to the public on 17 November 2023 at 11:00 at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. "Time Out Market" is a food and cultural market that brings the best of the city together under one roof: its best chefs, drinks and cultural experiences. The "Time Out Market" in Cape Town will offer across 30 000 sq ft (2787m²) a curated mix of 13 home-grown culinary concepts spanning many cultural influences and flavours. In addition, it will also boast local wines, beers, cocktails, mocktails and soft drinks at three bars as well as art and cultural experiences from Capetonian and South African local talent.

Two South African burger restaurants are on the World’s Best Burger list!

Global travel website Big 7 Travel has released its list of the best burgers in the world for 2022. Based on a ranking system that considers editorial experience, critic reviews, customer feedback, location and accessibility, presentation, value for money and atmosphere, the list consists of 50 burger restaurants from locations from around the globe. Two burger joints from South Africa made it to Big 7 Travel's list - Smokin’ Joe’s in Durban was ranked 12th best burger (and Africa's best) while The Dogs Bollocks in Cape Town came in on rank 34. Congratulations!
Overall winner of the ranking is Royal Stacks in Melbourne, Australia, followed by Midcity Smashedburger from Portland in Oregon (USA) and Burger Creek in Auckland, New Zealand.

South Africa: Africa's first "Time Out Market" to open in Cape Town! [update]

update (27 August 2023): Time Out Market Cape Town has revealed further additions to its all-star culinary lineup of local chefs and restaurateurs. According to Time Out, Chef Peter Tempelhoff ‘s Ramenhead, Chefs Anwar Abdullatief and Yolani Abraham’s new concept Barakat, Matt Manning’s Culture Wine Bar, and Eugene Smith’s YARD pizza confirmed to join Time Out Market Cape Town.

The first Time Out Market in Africa is set to open in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2023. Time Out Market is the world’s first editorially curated food and cultural market, bringing a city’s best chefs, restaurateurs and unique cultural experiences together under one roof. The first Time Out Market opened in 2014 in a historic market hall in Lisbon (Portugal), quickly turning into the most popular destination in the city with 4m visitors a year. Since then, six Time Out Markets have been opened in Miami, New York, Boston, Chicago (USA), Montreal (Canada) and Dubai (UAE).


The new Time Out Market in Cape Town is expected to open towards the end of 2023 at the V&A Waterfront. It will have 14 kitchens, all run by different top chefs from Cape Town, and four bars with drinks co-curated by the city’s best bars. There’ll also be a stage for live performances. With approximately 750 seats, guests will be able to sit indoors or quayside.

This restaurant in Cape Town is one of "The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022"!

Cape Town restaurant FYN has been named one of "The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022" and "The Best Restaurant in Africa 2022". The restaurant, which has secured the 37th spot in the 2022 list, celebrates Japanese cooking technique while using local fish, poultry and meat from the best farms and fisheries in and around Cape Town. FYN was launched in 2018 by South African chef and restaurateur Peter Tempelhoff, who is supported by French general manager Jennifer HugĂ© and head chef Ashley Moss. The restaurant is located on the fifth floor of a 19th-century silk factory on 37 Parliament Street in Cape Town. Two other South African restaurants were also awarded: La Colombe in Constantia came in at number 56 in the top 100 and last year's "Best Restaurant in Africa, Wolfgat in Paternoster, at number 90. Congratulations!

Northern Cape: Restaurant Klein JAN wins La Liste's "World Hidden Gem 2022" award!

The 2022 La Liste selection of the world’s best 1000 restaurants has been announced in Paris on 29 November 2021 and a local South African restaurant has has been named one of the Restaurants worth going an extra mile for. Restaurant Klein JAN, owned South Africa’s very first Michelin-starred chef, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, is one of the seven international establishmehts to win the World Hidden Gem award. According to Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, the restaurant was inspired by a love of South Africa, heritage, and the concept of ‘home’. The menu at the restaurant is defined by local ingredients, culinary tradiations and sustainability and designed to tell the stories of the Northern Cape, past and present.
Restaurant Klein JAN was launched in 2021 is situated in South Africa’s largest private game reserve, Tswalu Kalahari Private Game Reserve. It is open to day visitors for a lunch service on select dates each month. Guests staying at the Game Reserve's Motse camp and Tarkuni homestead are invited to experience one meal at Restaurant Klein JAN during their stay.


Each year, La Liste provides a ranking of the 1,000 best restaurants in the world. Its method is based on an algorithm integrating and weighting more than 970 sources, including opinions from the international, national and regional press, ratings and rankings from recognized guidebooks as well as customer satisfaction from review websites. The La Liste Awards recognise chefs, restaurants and regions that are making waves in the industry through excellent cuisine, innovation, sustainability and authenticity.

South Africa: A restaurant in Paternoster earns a spot in World’s 50 Best!

A small restaurant with only 20 diners per sitting located on South Africa's West Coast has just been included in the prestigious list of "The World's 50 Best Restaurants". Wolfgat, which has secured the 50th spot in the 2021 list, is situated in a charming revamped 130 years old fisherman’s cottage in Paternoster in the Western Cape. The restaurant offers a unique dining experience showcasing a selection of indigenous ingredients specific to its coastal location. Wolfgat is owned by chef Kobus van der Merwe, who has been compared to Copenhagen chef RenĂ© Redzepi for his love of foraging and championing local produce. Kudos Kobus and congratulations to your team!

NB.: Wolfgat is not only the 50th best restaurant in the world, it has also been named "Best Restaurant in Africa"! In September 2021, "The World's 50 Best Restaurants" announced the runners-up list of restaurants in positions 51 to 100. Two South African restaurants made the list: La Colombe in Constantia at 81, and FYN in Cape Town's City Centre at 92. Congratulations!

The World's 50 Best Restaurants: Cape Town restaurant named Africa's best restaurant 2019!

Cape Town's "The Test Kitchen", with acclaimed chef Luke Dale-Roberts at the helm, has just been named Africa's best restaurant 2019 and the World's 44th best restaurant 2019 (2018: 50th) at the The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 awards. The fine dining eatery's food is based on popular global dishes with South African ingredients and twists. "The Test Kitchen" is located in The Old Biscuit Mill on 375 Albert Road in Woodstock.

Cape Town restaurant named Africa's best restaurant 2018!

Cape Town's "The Test Kitchen", with acclaimed chef Luke Dale-Roberts at the helm, has just been named Africa's best restaurant 2018 and the World's 50th best restaurant 2018 at the The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018 awards, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, held at Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, Spain. The fine dining eatery's food is based on popular global dishes with South African ingredients and twists. "The Test Kitchen" is located in The Old Biscuit Mill on 375 Albert Road in Woodstock.



The World's 50 Best Restaurants list is compiled from the votes of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, a group of 1,000 international restaurant industry experts and well-travelled gourmets. The Academy comprises 26 separate regions around the world, each of which has 40 members, including a chairperson.

Kruger National Park: SANParks appointed new restaurant operators!

South African National Parks (SANParks) just apponited new operators for some of the restaurants and take-aways in the Kruger National Park. The restaurants in the Lower Sabie Rest Camp, in the Olifants Rest Camp and in the Letaba Rest Camp will be operated by Mugg and Bean. All three restaurants will be fully operational form March 2014. Also from March 2014, Wimpy will run the restaurants at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp and at Satara Rest Camp.
The Selati restaurant in Kruger National Park's largest rest camp, the Skukuza Rest Camp, will be operated by Ciao! and is expected to start operations already in December 2013, while the main camp restaurant and take away in Skukuza will be serviced by Cattle Baron and Bistro. Operations will start in May 2014 because of extensive refurbishment.

Everyone loves burgers, right? A very good reason for the Expresso Show, a daily breakfast show on SABC 3 in South Africa, to named the Top 5 burger joints in the country. According to the show the following five are South Africa's best:



In the second half of the video clip, Zola, one of the show's cooks, cooks the so-called Expresso Breakfast Burger. Not bad aswell! Enjoy!

Swaziland got its first "Ocean Basket" seafood restaurant

Great news for all Swazis and travellers in Swaziland alike. Swaziland recently got its first Ocean Basket outlet. The branch of the South African seafood chain opened at The Gables Shopping Centre in the Swaziland's Ezulwini Valley. Ocean Basket, which was founded in Pretoria in 1995, is a very popluar South African chain of seafood restaurants. Its menu includes "freshest" seafood, as well as a good selection of wines.

Ezulwini Valley is located on the northwest of Swaziland. It contains a number of wildlife sanctuaries and features including the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. The Ezulwini Handicrafts Centre and Swazi National Museum in Lobamba, the historical capital of Swaziland, are also located in the Ezulwini Valley. The main highway through the Valley is the MR3 between Swaziland's capital Mbabane and Manzini.

Cape Town: Asoka Bar named "Best Bar in Africa & Middle East 2012"

The Asoka Bar in Cape Town, located on busy Kloof Street, was named "Best Bar in Africa & Middle East" in Drinks International's "The World’s 50 Best Bars 2012" ranking. The bar was ranked 50th in the overall ranking, which was won by the Artesian Bar at the Langham Hotel in London, England.
Asoka Bar is a lounge bar housed within a slender Victorian town house. The highlight, besides the drinks and the food, is the central courtyard dining area in which sits an olive tree (which is believed to be one of the oldest in Cape Town). The bar's  style is hard to describe as it is a fusion of Asian food, cosmopolitan drinks, various music styles, the setting in a old town house and Cape Town's diverse people. Main Meals at Asoka Bar are priced from R60 (Thai Green Curry) to R110 (Glazed Teriyaki Beef Fillet), Tapas are from R50 (veg. Spring Rolls) to R95 (Mezze Platter). Cocktails are ranging between R42 to R60.

Mapungubwe National Park now has a restaurant facility

Mapungubwe National Park, located in South Africa's north bordering Botswana and Zimbabwe, now has a restaurant facility. The restaurant is inside the Mapungubwe Interpretive Centre, which was voted World Building of the Year at the prestigious World Architecture Festival Awards 2009. The licensed restaurant currently operates from 07:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. and offers comprehensive breakfasts and light lunch menus. In the next few weeks a curio shop, basic supply store, tuck-shop at the Confluence, Bush Breakfasts and Braais (barbecues) are some of the additional services that should become available.
