Western Cape: Tweede Tol picnic & camping site in the Limietberg Nature Reserve temporarily closed!

CapeNature, the public agency responsible for biodiversity conservation in South Africa's Western Cape, has announced that the Tweede Tol picnic and camping site in the Limietberg Nature Reserve is closed until further notice. Located at the original tollgate of the historic Bainskloof Pass near Wellington, Tweede Tol picnic and camping site has long been a favourite getaway for nature lovers. Nestled along the crystal-clear Witte River, the site features 26 shaded campsites — including six private, self-contained units — and a scenic picnic area surrounded by mountains and river pools. Known for its tranquil atmosphere, refreshing swims, and access to popular hiking trails, Tweede Tol offers an authentic wilderness experience just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town.

Limietberg Nature Reserve
Set amid the rugged mountains and deep valleys of the Boland region, the Limietberg Nature Reserve is part of the Cape Floristic Region World Heritage Site. Covering more than 117,000 hectares, this pristine protected area is home to rich fynbos vegetation, cascading waterfalls, and diverse wildlife such as klipspringers, baboons, and a variety of bird species. With its scenic hiking routes, mountain streams, and historic sites including Bainskloof Pass, Limietberg Nature Reserve remains one of the Western Cape's most spectacular outdoor destinations — a true showcase of South Africa's natural and cultural heritage.

Western Cape: Limietberg Nature Reserve closed until further notice! [update]

update (29 February 2024): CapeNature has announced that Limietberg Nature Reserve will be closed till 04 March 2024 due to fires.

CapeNature, the public institution with the responsibility for biodiversity conservation in South Africa's Western Cape has announced that the Limietberg Nature Reserve is closed due to a fire until further notice. The Nature Reserve is located in the Du Toitskloof Mountains, near Paarl. It stretches from Franschhoek in the south towards Groot Drakenstein in the east and northwards as far as the Voëlvlei dam, covering an area of some 117 000 hectares.
Limietberg Nature Reserve is home to small antelope, baboon, caracal, leopard, endemic birds such as the Cape sugarbird and the protea canary, as well as the majestic black eagle. The reserve offers some great hiking trails. Visitors can also visit the many historical sites along the trails, including ancient rock art, a disused manganese mine and the graves of convicts who helped build the Bainskloof Pass.

Western Cape: CapeNature has closed some areas within its Nature Reserves due to the current adverse weather conditions!

CapeNature, the public institution with the responsibility for biodiversity conservation in South Africa's Western Cape, has informed the public that the current adverse weather conditions in the province have affected operations at some of its Nature Reserves such as Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve, Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, Limietberg Nature Reserve and the Cederberg Wilderness Area. These adverse weather conditions are expected to continue for the next few days, so that CapeNature took the decision to close certain areas within the Nature Reserve mentioned above as these are compromised due to the heavy rainfall. Western Cape: Limietberg Nature Reserve temporarily closed due to adverse weather conditions!

CapeNature, the public institution with the statutory responsibility for biodiversity conservation in South Africa's Western Cape, just announced that due to adverse weather expected over the next few days the Limietberg Nature Reserve, including all hiking trails, has been closed to the public from this afternoon (23 July 2019) until 24 July 2019 and will re-open on 25 July 2019.
Limietberg Nature Reserve is located in the Du Toitskloof Mountains near Paarl. The World Heritage Site stretches from Franschhoek in the south, eastwards towards Groot Drakenstein, and northwards as far as Voëlvlei Dam. Limietberg Nature Reserve is known for its beautiful hikes through steep kloofs and deep valleys.
