What travellers need to know

The eThekwini Municipality classifies beach water quality as excellent when E. coli levels are below 130, acceptable between 130 and 500, and poor above 500.

Although all 23 beaches in Durban are currently listed as open, several recorded results in the acceptable category. Thekwini Beach, Laguna Beach and Reunion Beach had readings of 487, 377 and 408 respectively.

Water quality can change between sampling rounds, so travellers should check the latest results before swimming.
