Plettenberg Bay Shark Spotters resume operations after three-month suspension

The Plettenberg Bay Shark Spotters programme has resumed operations in Plettenberg Bay after being suspended since 01 July 2026 due to the expiry of its agreement with Bitou Municipality.

A new agreement was signed on 05 October 2026, allowing trained shark spotters to return to the beaches.

For now, the service is operating daily from 07:30 to 16:30 at Central Beach and The Wreck. Coverage is expected to expand to five beaches from November 2026 through April 2027. The five beaches previously covered by the Plett programme have included The Wreck, Robberg 1, Central Beach, The Wedge and Lookout Beach.

The programme provides an early-warning system by monitoring the water for sharks and alerting beach users when necessary. Its return is particularly relevant as the summer beach season approaches.

Visitors should nevertheless continue to follow lifeguard and Shark Spotters instructions and pay attention to warning flags and other safety signals. The service is an additional early-warning measure and does not mean that sharks are absent from the area.

For October, travellers should note that Shark Spotters coverage in Plettenberg Bay is limited to Central Beach and The Wreck.
