While British Airways decided to leave Dar Es Salaam at the end of March 2013, Turkish flag carrier, Turkish Airlines, will increase its service to the largest city in Tanzania. From 30 May 2013 the airline will add two more weekly flights to its current five weekly frequencies between Istanbul and Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar Es Salaam. Turkish Airlines will operate the flights on board a Boeing 737-900ER.
Turkish Airlines, a Star Alliance member since 01 April 2008, is currently operating scheduled services to 184 international and 37 domestic airports, serving a total of 221 airports, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

TAP Portugal to increase flights to Mozambique
The national airline of Portugal, TAP Portugal, will increase operations between Lisbon and Maputo (Mozambique) during the Northern summer season 2013. From 05 June 2013 until 18 September 2013 the airline will add a 5th weekly flight between the two destinations.
TAP Portugal is a member of the Star Alliance, the world's first and largest global airline alliance, and is currently operating flights to 80 destinations in 36 countries across Europe, Africa, North America and South America.

Ethiopian Airlines revises Addis Ababa <> Milan (via Rome) service
Ethiopian Airlines, one of the fastest-growing carriers in the industry and flag carrier of Ethiopia, has revised its service between its main hub at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa and Milano Malpensa Airport in Milan (Italy) via Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport in Rome (Italy) on 10 Sept 2012. The airline is operating daily flights between Addis Ababa - Rome - Milan. Ethiopian Airlines previously operated this routing until 31 May 2012.

Star Alliance: New flight option to and from South America
Good news for South Africans and South Americans alike - the three South American carriers Avianca, TACA Airlines and Copa Airlines joined the Star Alliance, the world's first and largest global airline alliance. The Star Alliance, to which South African Airways has belonged for more than 10 years, now has 27 members offering more than 21500 daily flights to 1356 airports in 193 countries.
With Avianca, TACA Airlines and Copa Airlines now being part of the Star Alliance network, passengers from within and outside the region will be able to connect seamlessly through the Copa Airlines hubs in Panama City (Panama) and Bogota (Colombia) and the Avianca, TACA Airlines hubs in Bogota (Colombia), San Salvador (El Salvador), Lima (Peru) and San Jose (Costa Rica).
Avianca, the flag carrier of Columbia, and TACA Airlines, agreed to a strategic merger in October 2009, creating a combined network focusing on North, Central and South America, the Caribbean and cities in Europe. The two airlines are currently operating international flights to more than 100 destinations around the world. Panama's national airline, Copa Airlines, together with its partner airline Copa Airlines Colombia (formerly known as Aero Republica) is currently offering flights to 64 destinations in 29 countries.

South African Airways and TAP Portugal expanded their code share
South Africa's flag carrier South African Airways (SAA) and the Portuguese national carrier TAP Portugal expanded their current code-share service on international flights between Portugal and South Africa. Since 07 March 2012 new services are available in addition to the current code share services offered via London on SAA-operated routes between Johannesburg, Cape Town and London, and on TAP Portugal-operated routes between London and Lisbon.
Customers of South African Airways are benefiting from new connecting code share services beyond Lisbon to other Portuguese destinations within the TAP domestic network, including Porto, Faro and Funchal (Madeira). TAP Portugal customers are in return benefiting from connecting flights beyond Johannesburg to other South African cities in the SAA domestic network, such as Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London.

Ethiopian Airlines joins Star Alliance
Ethiopia's flag carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, has officialjy joined Star Alliance, the world's first and largest airline alliance. The airline will begin participating in the various Star Alliance fare products as of 01 January 2012. The Ethiopian Airlines' African routes will be added to the offer of the Star Alliance Africa Airpass, a special fare designed for those wishing to criss-cross the continent by air.
With the addition of Ethiopian Airlines, the Star Alliance network in Africa grows to cover major commercial and political cities of the continent particularly in East, Central and West Africa. In total, the 16 Star Alliance member carriers serving Africa offer more than 750 daily flights to over 110 destinations in 48 countries on the continent, with Addis Ababa, Cairo and Johannesburg serving as the main hubs.
On a global scale, with the addition of Ethiopian Airlines, the Star Alliance network now counts 28 airlines, offering a choice of more than 21,000 daily flights to 1,290 destinations in 189 countries.

Ethiopian Airlines signs code share agreement with Asiana Airlines
Ethiopia's flag carrier Ethiopian Airlines, one of Africa's fastest growing airlines, has signed a code share agreement with the award winning South Korean airline Asiana Airlines. The new partnership between the two Star Alliance members will provide passengers with more flight options and better connections between both Africa and Asia. The airlines will cooperate on code share flights between Seoul, Hong Kong and Addis Ababa. The four weekly code share flights have already commenced as of 29 August 2011.
Asiana Airlines is one of South Korea's two major airlines, along with Korean Air. Asiana has its domestic hub at Gimpo International Airport and its international hub at Incheon International Airport in Seoul. Asiana is a member of the Star Alliance and currently operates 14 domestic and 85 international passenger routes.

Aviation news from East Africa
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines operated its first flight to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, on 31 October 2010. Five flights a week will be offered to Kigali with an intermediate stopover in Entebbe (Uganda). The new service will be operated using Airbus A330-200 equipment, offering seats for 243 passengers.
KLM and Air France (they merged in 2004) is now serving 43 African destinations at a frequency of more than 200 flights a week.
A cooperation with Kenya Airways will also make it possible for KLM to offer a more extensive network with even more destinations and higher frequencies in East Africa. Operating from the its Nairobi hub, Kenya Airways offers flights to destinations including Ndola, Harare, Mombassa, Lusaka, Lilongwe, Bujumbura and Zanzibar. In cooperation with Kenya Airways, Air France also offers flights to destinations including Dzaoudzi and Moroni via Nairobi.
Kenya Airways, the flag carrier of the East African country, will launch a Nairobi <> Rome (Italy) service from December 2010. The airline is then operationg flights to the four European destinations Amsterdam, London, Paris and Rome. Kenya Airways currently flies to 50 destinations worldwide, 41 of them in Africa.
A move by local carriers to introduce and increase flights to the Kenyan coast will be a boost for the whole region. Low-cost airline Fly540 startet a Nairobi <> Diani service on 11 Nov 2010 and will add flights to Ukundu in December 2010. Flag carrier Kenya Airways will add flights to Malindi in December 2010. In the recent past KQ has already increased frequencies to Mombasa (ex Nairobi) from 42 to 59 every week.

German airline Air Berlin is now offering a weekly direct service between Berlin (Germany) and Mombasa (Kenya). The new flight service departs Berlin at 20:00 every Thursday, landing in Mombasa at 06:40am the next day.
