For the second year in a row, South African airline FlySafair has been named Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa in the 2022 Skytrax World Airline Awards. Fastjet (Zimbabwe) came in second in the ranking, followed by Jambojet, fly540 (both Kenya) and Lift, also from South Africa. FlySafair was also named eigth best airline in Africa, a category won by Ethiopian Airlines. South African Airways was awared third place in this ranking. Southern Africa’s largest independent airline measured by flight movements, Airlink, was named third best Regional Airline in Africa 2022, while the staff of South African Airways was voted second best in Africa 2022.
The Skytrax World Airline Awards 2022 are based on customer responses to an online survey which was operated from September 2021 to August 2022. Over 100 customer nationalities participated in the survey with 13.42 million eligible survey entries counted in the results. All survey entries were screened to identify IP and user information, with duplicate, suspect or ineligible entries deleted. Over 350 airlines are featured in the survey results.

FreshAir to commence flights between Johannesburg <> Victoria Falls in November 2012
update (12 Nov 2012): According to news reports, FreshAir has announced plans to resume operations from as early as December with another operator. 51% shareholder Nu-Aero (49% belong to 1time) is currently planning to find a new operator that will operate between Victoria Falls and OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on its behalf.

The new Zimbabwean registered low cost airline FreshAir, a joint venture between Nu.Com (Pvt) Ltd (Nu-Aero) from Zimbabwe and South African budget carrier 1time, announced that it will start operating flights between OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, on 02 November 2012. FreshAir will, as it stands, operate three weekly flights on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays between the two destinations. In favour of the new airline, 1time is terminating its current Johannesburg <> Livingstone (Zambia) flights and will subsequently replace it with flights between OR Tambo International Airport and Victoria Falls.

1time to suspend Johannesburg <> Mombasa (Kenya) service
Due to its current financial situation, South Africa's low cost carrier 1time will suspend operations between Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport and Mombasa in Kenya from 17 September 2012. The beleaguered airline launched the twice-weekly service between the two destinations only on 05 March 2012. If you are booked on a flight with 1time between Johannesburg <> Mombasa, it is advised to get hold of the airline as soon as possible.
1time applied for "Business Rescue", which is similar to the process of "Chapter 11" in the USA, on 21 August 2012. "Business Rescue" aims at assisting with the rehabilitation of a company in financial distress. It provides temporary moratorium from creditors under legal supervision in clearly defined terms. 1time hopes to be back on track within the next three month.

South Africa: Kulula receiving new Boeing 737-800s
South African low cost airline Kulula, a subsidiary of British Airways franchise Comair, received the first of seven new Boeing 737-800 passenger jets, and will receive another two later in 2012. The new Boeing 737-800s utilise 18% less fuel per seat than the aircraft the airline are replacing, thereby saving two million-litres of fuel per aircraft per year for the equivalent total seats.
By the end of 2012 the airline will operate eight aircraft, carrying about 2.8 million passengers. Kulula currently operates flights to Johannesburg, Lanseria (North Johannesburg), Durban, George, and Cape Town.
The airline has the youngest fleet in Southern Africa, with an average age of five years.

South Africa: SA National Taxi Council to launch low-cost airline "Santaco Express"
South Africa's news website news24.com is reporting that the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) will be launching a low-cost airline in September 2011 as one of many initiatives planned by the council to reform the taxi industry. The new budget airline will be named Santaco Express and will initially operate one or two flights a day between Lanseria in Gauteng to Bhisho in the Eastern Cape, and then on to Cape Town International Airport. The first official take off is planned for November 2011.
Flights with Santaco Express will be operated by Air Aquarius (AirQuarius Aviation?), which works with SA Express and SA Airlink. Air Aquarius (AirQuarius Aviation?) will also supply the 100-seater aircraft, crew and the necessary aviation licences. Santaco is expecting to take over the aviation operation from Air Aquarius within 18 to 24 months.

Zimbabwe: First Low Cost Airline to be launched in September

Fly Kumba will be launched in Harare this Friday with its maiden flight to Johannesburg, South Africa, scheduled for the second week of December. (10 Nov)
According to several newspaper reports Fly Kumba is scheduled to begin operations in September, and will fly both domestic and regional routes.

According to several newspaper reports Fly Kumba is scheduled to begin operations in September, and will fly both domestic and regional routes.Due to the fact that around three million Zimbabweans estimated to be living and working in South Africa, the main route for the airline will be Harare <> Johannesburg. Flights on other routes such as Harare <> Bulawayo, Harare <> Vic Falls, Johannesburg <> Vic Falls and Harare <> Kariba will also be introduced.
Fly Kumba Chief Executive Officer, Lloyd Muchaka said the airline's vision and mission was centered around ensuring that flying is affordable to everyone.
“We intend to become Zimbabwe's preferred low-cost airline, delivering the lowest air fares with the highest consumer value add offering world class service to price sensitive consumers…Fly Kumba intends to fulfill everyone's dream of flying based on a fare of below US$ 80, departure tax included in this price for a flight from Harare to Johannesburg,” said Muchaka in an interview.
