2010 World Cup ticket sales update

FIFA Secretary-General Jerome Valcke just told the media that the number of seats at the World Cup has jumped by 100,000 to more than three million. Due to revised seating plans and allocations the additional 100,000 seats became available.
The
percentage of seats sold will probably be slightly higher than at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. FIFA is currently expecting to sell 97% of all tickets which is pretty close to the best World Cup ever in terms of ticketing which is the 1994 one in the US.

"Time for Africa" by Freshlyground & Shakira is the official 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem!

A song by Capetonian band Freshlygound and Columbian singer Shakira was chosen by FIFA as the official 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem. The song "Time for Africa" is expected to be released across the world next week and will be available for download beginning 26 April 2010. The video for "Time for Africa" will be available in standard definition as well as in 3D. According to several news reports the artists will perform the song at the World Cup 2010 kick-off concert in Soweto on 10 June 2010, and at the tournament's opening ceremony on June 11 2010 and right before the 11 July 2010 final.

Football for Hope Festival, 04 - 10 July 2010, Alexandra, Johannesburg

While the best football teams in the world are facing each other in the 2010 World Cup™ in South Africa, the "Football for Hope Festival" is taking place in Johannesburg's Alexandra township. 32 international teams, representing local organisations that use football for positive social change in the areas of anti-discrimination and social integration, children's rights and education, health promotion, peacebuilding etc., will compete in a fast-paced tournament to be crowned Football for Hope world champions on 10 July 2010.


To highlight the social dimension of football all matches will be played in mixed teams (boys & girls aged 15 - 18) and without any referees. Any disagreement between the teams on the pitch will be ressolved through direct dialogue.
All teams taking part in the festival were not only chosen because of their football skills, but because of their contribution to social change in their field of work in their home countries. In the tournament 13 African teams from all over the continent are meeting 8 teams from North & South America, 6 European teams, 2 Asian teams, 2 teams for Oceania and 1 team from the Middle East. Become a 2010 World Cup volunteer! - SouthAfrica.info

The application process for the 2010 Fifa World Cup volunteer programme is now open.

A total of 15 000 volunteers are required and will be selected from South Africa, the continent and the rest of the world to assist in making sure the event is run smoothly.

"The volunteer programme is an excellent way to get involved in South Africa and Africa's once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of hosting the world's biggest sporting event," Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan said in Johannesburg this week. [more on SouthAfrica.info]

Confederations Cup: Free tickets from FIFA

Sport24.co.za is reporting that FIFA has decided give dish out free tickets for the Confederations Cup in an attempt to fill the thousands of empty seats in the stadiums.
Sport24 is quoting FIFA spokesperson Nicolas Maingot saying that tickets for football fans will be given to institutions which have been very supportive of the event. The spokesperson didn'nt mention the amount of tickets, but they be for some of the remaining group matches.

Except for the opening match South Africa vs. Iraq at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg all other matches have been nowhere near capacity.
