The flag carrier airline of the United Kingdon, British Airways, is set to increase capacity on its London to Johannesburg route. The airline will introduce a second daily Airbus A380 service between Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, South Africa, during the Northern summer 2025 season. From 01 June 2025 the second daily Airbus A380 service will replace the Boeing 777-300ER currently operating on this route (BA56/BA57).
The additional Airbus A380 flights will provide 215 more seats between London and Johannesburg - 173 more economy seats, 15 more in premium economy, 21 more in business class and six more in first class than the Boeing 777-300ER. The schedules for the daily flights remain unchanged.

Australia: Qantas starts Airbus A380 flights to South Africa!
The flag carrier of Australia, Qantas, has operated the first Airbus A380 flight between Australia and South Africa on 30 September 2024. The A380 will fly up to six times per week between Sydney Airport (SYC) in Sydney and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and will see a near-doubling of capacity, with an extra 130,000 seats between Australia and Africa every year.
The Qantas Airbus A380 has capacity for 485 passengers across four cabins, with the introduction of the Superjumbo seeing a return of First Class on the route for the first time since 2018. Qantas First features 14 individual suites arranged in an exclusive 1-1-1 configuration and convert into a 212-centimetre bed. The upgauge will also more than double the number of Premium Economy seats available between the cities.
Qantas also intends to relaunch direct flights from Perth to Johannesburg from mid-2025, subject to meeting border agency requirements.

Emirates to deploy an A380 on Dubai <> Johannesburg route!
The largest airline in the Middle East, Emirates, will operate an Airbus A380-800 on one of its four daily flights (EK761/762) between Dubai International Airport (DXB) in Dubai and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, effective 01 February 2017. The airline currently operates all four daily flights on board a Boeing 777-300ER.

British Airways features Cape Town in its latest A380 video
The flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom, British Airways, operates an Airbus A380 between London and Johannesburg since February 2014. To celebrate the new service to South Africa on board the world's largest passenger carrier, the airline features Cape Town in its latest Airbus A380 promotional video. In the video you can see an Airbus A380 flying right over the city's iconic Table Mountain, Boulders Beach and the world famous Cape Winelands.

Emirates to re-introduce its A380 service to Johannesburg during Dec 2013/Jan 2014
The largest airline in the Middle East, Emirates, will re-introduce its Airbus A380 service between its main hub at Dubai International Airport (DXB) in Dubai and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg from 24 Dec 2013 - 03 Jan 2014 and from 08 Jan 2014 - 28 Jan 2014. The Airbus A380 replaces the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft the airline is usually operating between the two destinations. Emirates will also operate an extra Boeing 777-300ER service (2-class configuration) between Dubai and Johannesburg on 04 Jan 2014.

British Airways brings the Airbus A380 to South Africa
The flag carrier of the United Kingdom, British Airways, announced that it will bring the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, to South Africa. From 12 Feb 2013 the airline will initially operate three A380 services a week to Johannesburg. This will increase from 10 March 2014 to six flights per week. These flights will be part of British Airways' normal schedule to Johannesburg. Tickets are already on sale! Awesome!
British Airways’ A380s will accommodate 469 customers across four cabins. Customers in First will be seated at the front of the main deck. The cabin will offer 14 seats and is evolved from the current First class with 30 per cent more personal space and 60 per cent more personal stowage.

Emirates cancels planned A380 service to Johannesburg
update (06 Sept 2012): In the meantime, Emirates has confirmed that the planned re-commencement of A380 services between Dubai and Johannesburg has not been canceled, but postponed until April 2013.

Emirates becomes by far London Heathrow’s largest A380 operator
Effective from 25 March 2012, Emirates will become by far London Heathrow’s largest A380 operator. The airline, based in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, will from March 2012 offer four daily flights to London in the UK with the world's largest passenger airliner.
The deployment means four of Emirates’ five daily Heathrow flights will be served by the A380 – twice as many as any other carrier.
The Emirates’ A380 offers 14 flat-bed First Class Private Suites with electrically operated doors and 76 fully-flat mini-pods in Business Class - all with aisle access - on the upper deck. Downstairs, there are 427 comfortable contoured seats in Economy Class, spread across four separate cabins.
Passengers on Emirates' A380 flights have a choice of over 1200 channels of films, television programmes, music and games. A personal satellite phone is furthermore fitted to each seat, which also carries a seat-back sms and email service, along with seat to seat calling and a personal picture viewing facility.

The third A380 service into Heathrow is another major investment for Emirates in the UK, where it operates 105 weekly flights via six gateways; London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Emirates A380 makes inaugural landing in Johannesburg
Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport welcomed its first scheduled Emirates A380 service on 01 October 2011.
Johannesburg is the first destination for the double-decker in Africa and the sixteenth destination on the Emirates A380 network.
Over the last year, Emirates has carried more than 900,000 passengers across its three South African gateways – Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. In the first eight months of 2011, the airline also carried more than 37,500 tonnes of high value cargo on its South African routes, with exports up 26 percent from the same period in 2010.
No matter what class they travel in, passengers on board the Emirates A380 will enjoy the highest levels of comfort in the air, including the airline’s multi award-winning ice entertainment system, which features 1,200 channels of movies, television, music and games. Customers in First Class and Business Class can also enjoy an exclusive Onboard Lounge at 40,000 feet, while First Class passengers can freshen up in one of two Onboard Shower Spas.
Emirates is the largest operator of the environmentally friendly double-decker aircraft, flying the A380 to London Heathrow (double-daily), Manchester, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Toronto, Seoul, Bangkok, Beijing, Shanghai, Jeddah, New York, Hong Kong, Sydney and Auckland.

Lufthansa names Airbus A380 “Johannesburg”
In a festive ceremony held at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport, Germany's flag carrier Lufthansa named one their Airbus A380s "Johannesburg". Following the naming ceremony, the aircraft departed for a scenic flight to the Western Cape, performing a low overflight of Cape Town and the Table Mountain.
Johannesburg became Lufthansa's third A380 destination in September 2010, right after Tokyo and Beijing. Meanwhile, New York, San Francisco and Miami have been added as further destinations served by Lufthansa's new flagship. As of 30 October, when the winter timetable goes into effect, Lufthansa will operate a daily A380 service on its Frankfurt-Singapore route as well, bringing the number of A380 destinations to seven.

Video shows lightning striking Emirates A380 jet
It is not that uncommon that aircrafts are being hit by lightning during flights. It is actually estimated that most commercial planes are hit by lightning at least once a year. In fact, planes can cause lightning to form when flying through storm clouds. But it is not that common that jets are getting filmed while being struck by lightning bolts.
The Emirates A380 captured in the video was being hit by a series of lightning during its flight from Dubai to London just when the plane was prepared to land at Heathrow International Airport. The plane landed safely a few minutes later, none of the 500 passeners on board the fligth were hurt and the plane was not damaged.

Emirates to launch Airbus A380 to Johannesburg
Emirates announced that Johannesburg, the industrial and economic capital of South Africa, will be the next destination slated for its flagship A380 aircraft. The daily A380 service will start 1 October 2011.
The airline’s first scheduled A380 service to Africa will operate daily as EK 761, departing Dubai at 04:40 (local time) and arriving at OR Tambo International Airport at 10:50 (local). The return flight, EK762, departs Johannesburg at 14:10 (local) and arrives in Dubai at 00:10 (local) the following day.
The 489-seat Emirates A380 offers 14 Private First Class Suites, 76 lie-flat beds in Business Class and 399 seats in Economy Class. First Class passengers have access to two Onboard Shower Spas, while all premium passengers on the upper deck can socialise at 40,000 feet in the Onboard Lounge. Beverages and bar snacks are served once the aircraft reaches cruising altitude - all the way until descent.

Check this great footage made in air from the cockpit of a Boeing 747. The pilots filmed an Airbus A380 passing under their Boeing 747 - just 300m away. It was filmed above the South China Sea and the pilots of the Boeing got informed by a Hong Kong air traffic controller that the A380 would come very close! That is why they took out the cam and filmed it - wow!

Lufthansa: daily Airbus A380 flights between Frankfurt & Johannesburg
German flag carrier Lufthansa introduced daily flights with the Airbus A380 between Frankfurt and Johannesburg on 15 Feb 2011. The daily connection increased the airline's capacity between Germany and South Africa by almost 1100 seats per week. Since the introduction of the Airbus A380 to South Africa in 2010, Lufthansa has increased its capacity already by 3850 seats per week.

Lufthansa soon offering five frequencies on FRA <> JNB route
Germany's flag carrier Lufthansa will introduce an additional A380 flight on 20 Nov 2010 to the well-frequented Frankfurt (FRA) - Johannesburg (JNB) route. Lufthansa is than offering five frequencies a week on this route.
The Airbus A380 has 526 seats in the best and most modern service classes offered by Lufthansa. The completely revamped First Class, with eight generous seats on the upper deck, promotes a sense of individuality. Business Class, with 98 seats on the upper deck, and Economy Class, with 420 seats on the main deck, provide unprecedented comfort and an impressive feeling of space.
From October 2010 until end of March 2011, a further daily non-stop flight between Frankfurt (FRA) and Cape Town (CPT) has been added to the airline’s timetable.
The Airbus A380 has 526 seats in the best and most modern service classes offered by Lufthansa. The completely revamped First Class, with eight generous seats on the upper deck, promotes a sense of individuality. Business Class, with 98 seats on the upper deck, and Economy Class, with 420 seats on the main deck, provide unprecedented comfort and an impressive feeling of space.

Qantas cancelling Sydney <> Johannesburg flights
Qantas has currently suspended all scheduled A380 services and will not resume flying their A380 fleet until they are completely confident that it is safe to do so and they receive clearance from the manufacturers and their regulators (also see the news regarding the emergency landing at Changi Airport in Singapore). According to Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce the airline's six Airbus jets will remain out of action for at least the next 72 (from today) hours [src.].
