Major tourist routes in Kenya's Mount Kenya National Park have been upgraded. The project has seen major improvement of access roads along Kalalu Farm to Sirimon Gate and Old Moses Camp, and Naromoru Gate to Met Station Road; a stretch of 27km. The Mt. Kenya roads project forms part of a 77km tourism roads project funded by the European Union (EU) and the Government of Kenya. The two other components of the roads project cover Tsavo East National Park and the Aberdare National Park. Works in Tsavo East National Park were already completed in 2015 while those in the Aberdare National Park will be completed in 2019.

Kenya: Lewa Wildlife Conservancy & Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve now part of World Heritage Site "Mount Kenya National Park"
The World Heritage Committee approved during its 37th Committee Session in Cambodia (16 June - 27 June 2013) to inscribe the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and the Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve as extensions of the Mount Kenya National Park, which got declared a World Heritage Site in 1997. The area added to the World Heritage Site lies within the traditional migrating route of the African elephant population of the Mount Kenya National Park and consists of a core of nearly 20,000 hectares as well as a buffer zone of almost 70,000 ha.

Kenya: Fires on Mt. Kenya finally put out

update (29 March 2012): Strong winds have rekindled raging fires on the Aberdare National Park complicating efforts by a team of officers to put it off. By Wednesday (28 March 2012), officials estimated that about 15,000 hectares of grassland at the park was destroyed by the fire, which started some two weeks ago. [more]
Good news from Mount Kenya National Park in Kenya. The fires that have been raging across the National Park for the last 9 days have been extinguished. There are currently no more active burning fires in the mountain accept for some logs that are still smoldering in rather isolated parts. Nevertheless roundabout 10% of of the mountain's forest has been destroyed by the fire. A second fire in the neighbouring Aberdare National Park has also largely been contained.
According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, the big mammal species like elephants, buffalos, bush bucks and the primates have been moved away from the fire. However, an unknown number of smaller invertebrates and reptiles like snakes were killed by the fire.
Kenya Wildlife Service officials said the fires on Mount Kenya were caused by "arsonists with ill intentions." It was previously said that the fires could have been set intentionally to help poachers escape after an attack. Shame of them!
