Proflight Zambia to launch larger jet service on Lusaka–Kasama route, boosting Northern Circuit tourism!

Proflight Zambia is set to make history by introducing scheduled flights with a 50-seat Bombardier CRJ-200 jet on the Lusaka–Kasama route, the first time an aircraft of this size will operate regularly at Kasama Airport (KAA) in Zambia’s Northern Province.

The enhanced service begins end-September 2025, with CRJ-200 jets operating on Tuesday flights and expanding to include Thursday flights from November 2025. Sunday flights will continue to use the smaller Jetstream 41 aircraft. The new jet service will significantly boost passenger capacity, cut travel time, and improve comfort on this increasingly popular route.

Known for its speed and reliability, the Bombardier CRJ-200 cruises at 860 km/h, making the journey between Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka and Kasama Airport (KAA) in Kasama just 1 hour 30 minutes. The deployment reflects Proflight Zambia’s ongoing commitment to strengthening domestic air connectivity and supporting the development of Zambia’s Northern Circuit, one of the country’s most scenic and culturally rich regions.

Kasama serves as the gateway to Kalambo Falls, one of Africa’s tallest waterfalls, and the culturally significant Chishimba Falls. Visitors can also explore the hot springs, traditional villages, and even connect onwards to Lake Tanganyika, making Northern Zambia a must-visit for both adventure travellers and cultural enthusiasts.

In addition to the Kasama upgrade, Proflight Zambia will expand its Mansa service, adding a Tuesday flight from end-September 2025 and a Thursday flight from November 2025. This brings the Lusaka–Mansa route to daily service except Sundays, offering even greater connectivity for business and leisure travellers to the Luapula Province.

Zambia: Proflight Zambia increases flights between Lusaka <> Kasama!

Zambian privately owned regional carrier Proflight Zambia is set to increase domestic flights between Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka and Kasama Airport (KAA) in Kasama in the Northern Province ahead of the Ukusefya Pa Ng’wena festival in August 2024.
The expanded schedule includes direct flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, with flights departing Lusaka at 07:45 and arriving in Kasama at 09:20. Return flights depart from Kasama at 09:50, arriving in Lusaka at 11:25. Connections from Ndola are offered each morning departing Ndola 06:30 and arriving Kasama at 09:20, return flights depart Kasama at 09:50hrs arriving in Ndola at 12:45.

The Ukusefya Pa Ng’wena festival is an annual traditional ceremony of the Bemba people. Held in August, the festival celebrates the rich heritage of the Bemba people at Ng’wena village. Visitors can look forward to experiencing traditional dance performances, captivating storytelling, and authentic Bemba cuisine.

Zambia: Zambia Airways to launch direct flights to Kasama!

The national airline of the Republic of Zambia, Zambia Airways, is set to launch direct flights to the city of Kasama in Zambia's Northern Province. The airline will operate one weekly service on Mondays between Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka and Kasama Airport (KAA) in Kasama. Flights will commence on 01 April 2024. Kasama is located in the Northern Province of Zambia. The city is the gateway to the Shiwa Ng’andu Estate, the Kapishya Hot Springs, and Lake Tanganyika, the deepest lake in Africa as well as to the significant Mpulungu Port and the Kalambo Falls, the second-highest drop waterfall in Africa.
Zambian privately owned carrier Proflight Zambia will also launch a two-weekly service to Kasama on 19 March 2024.

Zambia: Proflight Zambia to resume flights to Kasama in the Northern Province!

Zambian scheduled airline Proflight Zambia is set to resume flights to Kasama in Zambia's Northern Province following completion of runway and terminal infrastructure upgrades at the city’s airport.
The service will operate twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday, directly from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka to Kasama Airport (KAA) in Kasama on Tuesday, departing at 08:00 and arriving at 09:30. Additionally, there will be a flight via Mansa on Thursday, departing from Lusaka at 08:00 and arriving in Kasama at 10:25. Direct flights from Kasama to Lusaka  on Thursday will depart at 10:50, arriving at 12:30, and flights via Mansa from Kasama to Lusaka on Tuesday will depart at 09:55, arriving in Lusaka at 12:20.
Proflight Zambia will commence scheduled flights on 19 March,2024, using its 29-seat twin-turbo prop Jetstream 41 aircraft. The airline previously operated the Kasama route using a 12-seat Caravan aircraft for six years until 2017 when the airport was closed for construction work.

Proflight Zambia new service to Kasama is the only scheduled air access to the region and offers easy access for leisure travellers interested in exploring the Northern waterfalls, Shiwa Ng’andu, Kapishya Hot Springs, and Lake Tanganyika, the deepest lake in Africa as well as to the significant Mpulungu Port and the Kalambo Falls, the second-highest drop waterfall in Africa.

Zambia: TAZARA temporarily suspends operations between New Kapiri-Mposhi and Kasama! [update]

update (25 February 2022): TAZARA has announced that the repair work of the Chambeshi Railway Bridge in Zambia will finally start in March 2022. The repairs are expected to be completed in four months' time, so that train operations across the Chambeshi Railway Bridge can resume in July 2022. We'll keep you posted!

update (18 February 2022): According to an update on TAZARA's Facebook page, funds have already been provided by the Government of Zambia for the repair of the Chambeshi Rail Bridge. However, the tender process is yet to be completed, particularly with regard to the terms of engagement of the contractor, who has already been selected and is geared to move on site. We'll keep you posted!

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has announced that train movements between New Kapiri-Mposhi and Kasama in Zambia are temporarily disrupted to allow for repairs on the Chambeshi Rail Bridge, which suffered major damages from a goods train accident that occurred on 13 May 2021. The section of the track between Chambeshi Station and Kasama Station, a stretch of 83 km, has been closed to passenger trains. TAZARA's passenger trains in Zambia are currently only running between Kasama and Nakonde until further notice. However TAZARA's cargo wagons are being propelled across the Chambeshi Rail Bridge without locomotives, a measure that will guarantee uninterrupted deliveries of cargo to and from Kapiri-Mposhi. According to Head Public Relations, Conrad Simuchile, TAZARA is anticipating to resume normal operations within 12 weeks. We'll keep you posted!

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is a bi-national railway, jointly owned by the Government of Tanzania and the Government of Zambia on an equal share-holding basis. The 1,860 km-rail runs from Tanzania and East Africa’s major seaport of Dar es Salaam into the heart of Zambia's Central Province, terminating at New Kapiri-Mposhi, where it is further linked by road and rail to Zambia's capital city, Lusaka (about 200 km), Zambia's mining nerve centre, the Copperbelt province (about 100 km) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Zambia: Proflight Zambia puts its flights to Kasama on hold!

Zambian airline Proflight Zambia puts its flights to Kasama Airport (KAA) in Kasama, located in Zambia's Northern Province, on hold pending modifications to the larger aircraft it plans to deploy on the route. The airline had assigned a larger 29-seat Jetstream 41 aircraft to its Kasama routes from 01 January 2019 in the expectation that the Kasama Airport's runway would be tarred, but delays to that process mean the landing strip remains gravelled and unsuitable for that aircraft. Proflight Zambia expects its flights from Lusaka and Ndola to Kasama to be suspended for January until April 2019.

Zambia: Proflight Zambia launched a new direct service between Ndola <> Kasama!

Proflight Zambia, the operator of the largest fleet of aircraft in Zambia, launched a new direct service between Ndola and Kasama today (17 January 2017). The new direct flight avoids travellers have to stay overnight in Lusaka when flying between the two locations. Instead, the airline has introduced a four-times-a-week circuit on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, alternating between Lusaka > Ndola > Kasama > Lusaka and Lusaka > Kasama > Ndola > Lusaka . The direct flight will depart Ndola at 12:45 on Tuesdays and Fridays, arriving in Kasama at 14:25. The flight will depart Kasama on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:35, arriving in Ndola at 12:15.

Ndola is the third largest city in Zambia and the industrial and commercial center of the Copperbelt, the country's copper-mining region. Kasama is the capital of the Northern Province of Zambia, situated on the central-southern African plateau at an elevation of about 1400 m.

Zambia: Proflight Zambia to launch for new domestic routes!

Proflight Zambia, the operator of the largest fleet of aircraft in Zambia, is set to launch four new domestic routes in Zambia. The airline will relaunch its direct Ndola <> Solwezi route in January 2017, along with Ndola <> Kasama flights. A Lusaka <> Kalabo service will begin on 15 March 2017, and a direct Mfuwe <> Lower Zambezi service between 15 June 2017 and 31 October 2017.

The Lusaka <> Kalabo route will be operated on a twice-weekly basis on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, leaving Lusaka at 08:15hrs and arriving in Kalabo at 10:45hrs. The return flight leaves Kalabo at 11:05hrs, arriving in Lusaka at 12:15hrs.
The Ndola <> Solwezi flight will depart Ndola at 08:30hrs on Tuesdays and Fridays, arriving Solwezi at 09:30hrs. On Thursdays, the flight will depart Ndola at 13:35hrs, arriving Solwezi at 14:35hrs. The return flight departs Solwezi at 09:55hrs on Tuesdays and Fridays, arriving Ndola at 10:55hrs. On Thursdays, the flight will depart Solwezi at 15:00hrs arriving Ndola at 16:00hrs.  
Ndola <> Kasama flights will operate on Tuesdays and Fridays, leaving Ndola at 12:45hrs and arriving in Kasama at 14:25hrs. The return flight leaves Kasama on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:35 arriving Ndola at 12:15hrs.
