Botswana: Francistown airport completed after 3 years of construction

The reconstruction and expansion of the Francistown Airport (IATA: FRW) in Botswana has finally been (almost) completed, so that the airport is now ready to operate.
Although the contractors will be around for at least the next 12 month, Botswana's Minister of Transport and Communications, Frank Ramsden, is very optimistic that the airport will have a smooth take-off. The construction work in Francistown started in July 2008 and was planned to be finised in time for the 2010 World Cup in neighbouring South Africa. Due to several reasons it was completed only last month.

The reconstruction and expansion of the airport included two new runways as well as the renovations of the current ones (approved to land a Boeing 737 or an aircraft of equivalent class), a new terminal building, which has been designed for the traffic forecast up to 2025, openings for car rentals, a restaurant, shops and a bank. The approved project cost was P562 million.
