Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, the second flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is set to return to South Africa. The airline has announced that it will resume operations between Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) in Abu Dhabi and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg on 03 March 2022. The airline will operate three weekly flights on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The news comes after the UAE lifted restrictions on flights arriving from 12 African nations, including South Africa, on 29 January 2022 that were put in place after the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

Passengers arriving from Johannesburg to Abu Dhabi will be required to present a negative PCR test result obtained within 48 hours of their departure, as well as a negative rapid PCR test taken within six hours of departure. They will also need to take another PCR test upon arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH).
