According to British travel magazine Time Out, Melville in Johannesburg is one of the 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2020. The shortlist of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world is based on the opinions of locals - the 38,000-plus city-dwellers from around the world who answered the annual Time Out Index survey - as well as Time Out's global network of editors and experts. Ranked 33rd, Melville is described as a "joyous, everyone-knows-everyone kind of place". The largely residential neighbourhood suburb is known for its coffee shops, restaurants and bars that spill on to the pavement of Melville's tree-fringed main road as well as for its commercial centrepiece, 27 Boxes, a 51-store shopping complex constructed from recycled shipping containers showcasing Artisan foods, local Fashion & curated design.
Time Out recommends Xai Xai Lounge on 7th Street for its distinctive Portuguese and Mozambican-inspired plates as well as Kwoffee Shop on the corner of 7th Street & 4th Avenue for its coffee.
