Durban beach update: 22 beaches open for swimming (20 October 2025)! [update]

update (27 October 2025): On 21 October 2025, the eThekwini Municipality added Reunion beach to the list of beaches currently closed for swimming due to elevated water contamination levels.

Durban in KwaZulu-Natal remains one of South Africa’s top seaside destinations. Famous for its golden beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters, and year-round subtropical sunshine, Durban attracts thousands of visitors seeking the ultimate coastal escape. To ensure every beach experience is safe and enjoyable, the eThekwini Municipality continuously monitors water quality and issues regular safety updates.

Beaches open for swimming (as of 20 October 2025)
A total of 22 Durban beaches have passed the latest rigorous water quality tests and are officially safe for swimming. Daily lifeguard patrols from 06:00 to 18:30 ensure a secure environment for swimmers, surfers, and families alike.

Whether you enjoy swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, or a leisurely walk along Durban's famous promenade, these beaches promise clean waters, vibrant energy, and an authentic coastal experience.

Beaches temporarily closed
Currently, Anstey’s Beach is closed for swimming due to elevated water contamination levels. While water activities are restricted, it remains perfect for sunbathing, beach walks, and photography. The eThekwini Municipality will reopen the beach once water quality meets safe swimming standards.

Durban’s public swimming pools

For those seeking an alternative to the ocean or when beach conditions change, Durban offers 40 public swimming pools across the metro. Perfect for families, fitness enthusiasts, or anyone looking for a refreshing dip in a controlled environment.
