Durban, the vibrant coastal gem of KwaZulu-Natal, continues to shine as one of South Africa’s most popular seaside destinations. With its golden beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters, and year-round subtropical sunshine, the city draws thousands of visitors seeking the perfect coastal getaway. To keep every beach visit safe and enjoyable, the eThekwini Municipality consistently monitors beach water quality and issues regular safety updates.

A total of 22 Durban beaches have passed the city’s latest stringent water quality tests and are officially safe for swimming. Each beach is patrolled daily by professional lifeguards from 06:00 to 18:30, ensuring a safe seaside experience for both locals and visitors.

While water activities are not permitted, it remains a beautiful spot for sunbathing, beach walks, and photography. The eThekwini Municipality will reopen the beach once water quality meets safe swimming standards again.
Durban’s Public Swimming Pools
When beach conditions change or if you prefer a controlled environment, Durban offers an impressive network of 40 public swimming pools across the metro. They’re ideal for families, fitness swimmers, or anyone looking for a refreshing dip away from the surf.
Durban truly lives up to its reputation as South Africa’s playground by the sea — combining tropical charm, top-notch facilities, and a deep commitment to beach safety.
