Durban Beach Update: 18 beaches open for swimming (30 September 2025)!

Durban – the vibrant coastal city of KwaZulu-Natal – remains one of South Africa’s most popular holiday destinations thanks to its golden sandy beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters, and year-round subtropical climate. To ensure beachgoers enjoy a safe and memorable seaside experience, the eThekwini Municipality continues to monitor beach water quality and provide regular safety updates.

As of 30 September 2025, a total of 18 beaches in Durban have been declared safe for swimming. Each has passed strict municipal water quality checks and is staffed with professional lifeguards daily between 06:00 and 18:30.

  • uMgababa
  • uShaka Beach
  • Addington
  • North Beach
  • Bay of Plenty
  • South Beach
  • Wedge Beach
  • Battery Beach
  • Brighton Beach
  • Pipeline Beach
  • Toti Main Beach
  • Westbrook
  • Anstey's Beach
  • Thekwini Beach
  • Laguna Beach
  • Country Club Beach
  • Doonside Beach

Whether you’re into swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, or long seaside walks, Durban's open beaches promise safe waters and a vibrant coastal atmosphere for both locals and international visitors.

Durban beaches temporarily closed (no swimming)
The following beaches in Durban are currently closed for swimming due to elevated water contamination levels:

  • Reunion Beach
  • Winklespruit
  • mDloti Main Beach
  • uMhlanga Main Beach
  • Bronze Beach

Although swimming and water sports are not allowed, these beaches remain great for sunbathing, jogging, or scenic walks. The eThekwini Municipality will reopen them once water quality improves.

Durban’s Public Swimming Pools

For those who prefer calmer waters or when certain beaches are closed, Durban offers 40 public swimming pools across the city.
