Rwanda to suspend visa fees for citizens of member states of the Commonwealth, the Francophonie & the African Union!

The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, announced in a speech about Rwanda's transformation over the past 25 years at the International School for Government at King’s College in London, that the East African country is "soon considering exempting citizens of the Commonwealth, as well as the African Union and the Francophonie, from paying visa fees when entering Rwanda" [src.]. Rwanda is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations (53 member states) since 2009 and a member of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (54 full member states) since 1970. As a member of the United Nations since 1962, Rwanda is also a member of the African Union (55 member states) since it was founded in 2002. We'll keep you posted!

Johannesburg: The Apartheid Museum hosts a six-month exhibition on how the UN helped end apartheid!

Brand South Africa and the United Nations (UN) in South Africa are currently hosting a six months exhibition (19 October 2017 - 31 April 2018) titled "The Role of the United Nations in the Struggle for Freedom in South Africa" at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. The exhibition highlights the contributions made by the United Nations in assisting South Africa to fight against apartheid and achieve its liberation.

The Apartheid Museum is situated next to Gold Reef City on the corner of Northern Park Way and Gold Reef Road in Ormonde in Johannesburg. The museum is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. The admission fee is ZAR85.00 for adults and ZAR70.00 for pensioners, university students, children.

Victoria Falls: Official destination video for the UNWTO General Assembly (24-29 Aug 2013)

The 20th session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) general assembly will be held in Livingstone (Zambia) and Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) from from 24 - 29 August 2013. Video producer and photographer Tony Barnett filmed and edited the offical destination video, a joint production for the Zambian Tourism Board and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, for the event.



The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. The General Assembly is the supreme organ of the Organization. Its ordinary sessions, held every two years, are attended by delegates of the Full and Associate Members, as well as representatives from the Business Council. It is the most important meeting of senior tourism officials and high-level representatives of the private sector from all over the world.

Today is World Humanitarian Day (19 Aug 2011)

In an effort to raise public awareness of humanitarian assistance, the UN General Assembly has designated 19 August as World Humanitarian Day. The day honours those, who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and those, who continue to bring assistance and relief to millions. It also seeks to draw attention to humanitarian needs worldwide and to explain what humanitarian aid work entails.

Today is Human Rights Day (10 Dec 2010)

Held annually on the 10 December, Human Rights Day is one of the most important high points in the calendar of the United Nations. The day is traditionally marked by high-level political conferences, meetings, by cultural events and exhibitions dealing with human rights issues. The Nobel Peace Prize, for example, is awarded every year in Oslo, Norway, on 10 December.
This year's Human Rights Day is dedicated to Human Rights defenders who act to end discrimination.



The date (10 Dec) was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights. The formal establishment of the Human Rights Day occurred on 04 Dec 1950.

In South Africa, Human Rights Day is celebrated on 21 March, in remembrance of the Sharpeville massacre. The Sharpeville massacre, named after the township of Sharpeville in what is now Gauteng, occurred on 21 March 1960, when South African police opened fire on a crowd of black protesters, killing 69 people.

World Humanitarian Day 2010 (19 August)

19 August was declared the "World Humanitarian Day 2010" in 2008 in remembrance of Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Iraq Sérgio Vieira de Mello and 21 of his colleagues, who got killed following the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad on 19 August 2003. 



The designation of 19 August as World Humanitarian Day is the outcome of the relentless efforts of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Foundation and its aim dedicated to continue his (del Mello) unfinished mission of encouraging dialogue between communities and relieving the plight of victims of humanitarian crises.
