Garden Route National Park: Storms River Mouth Suspension Bridge temporarily closed for weekday maintenance!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the iconic suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth Rest Camp in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park will be temporarily closed for essential maintenance from 01 to 15 September 2025.

• The cloure applies only on weekdays (Monday–Friday).
• The bridge will remain open on weekends (Saturdays & Sundays) during the maintenance period.

Although the suspension bridge will be inaccessible on weekdays, visitors can still enjoy the spectacular natural beauty and a wide range of activities at Storms River Mouth, including:

• Waterfall Trail & Otter Trail (Day Access)
• Loerie & Blue Duiker Trails
• Kayak & Lilo Adventures
• Birdwatching & Nature Photography
• Restaurant & Gift Shop

Mozambique: The Maputo–Katembe Bridge to close temporarily for maintenance!

The iconic Maputo–Katembe Bridge in Mozambique, connecting Maputo to its southern suburb Katembe, is set to undergo scheduled maintenance and infrastructure monitoring, according to reliable sources in Mozambique. The  longest suspension bridge on the African continent will be temporarily closed to all road traffic from 22:00 on 13 May 2025 until 04:00 on 14 May 2025 to facilitate the safe execution of the maintenance work.
The planned activities include the localized lifting of the deck slab as part of the support structure's maintenance. Additionally, technical teams have already started marking monitoring points as part of the ongoing infrastructure assessment.

Graskop Gorge Lift (Mpumalanga): The suspension bridge is now wheelchair accessible!

The Graskop Gorge Lift Company has announced that the 52-metre suspension bridge, which links the southern side of the gorge, where the Graskop Gorge Lift is situated, to the northern side, which houses the Big Swing (the world’s highest cable gorge swing!), can now be accessed with wheelchairs. The bridge was built around the edge of the Graskop Gorge as an alternative means of access to either side.

The Graskop Gorge lift in Mpumalanga is a viewing lift that takes visitors 51 metres down the face of the Graskop Gorge and into the forest below. It is located just outside of Graskop on the R533 towards Hazyview along the famous Panorama Route (on the opposite side of the gorge to the Big Swing).

update (14 November 2018): The tolls charged for vehicles to use the Maputo-Catembe bridge range between 160MZN (GBP2.00 | €2.30 | $2,60 | R37.50) for class 1 vehicles and 1,200MZN (GBP15.00 | €17.30 | $19.50 | R280.00) for class 4 vehicles.

According to Mozambique's Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Machatine, the Maputo-Catembe bridge (or Maputo-Katembe bridge or Maputo - Ka Tembe bridge), which connects Maputo with Catembe by crossing the Maputo Bay, will be officially inaugurated on 10 November 2018 [src.]. The official opening of Africa's largest suspension bridge has been postponed several times since December 2017.



The Maputo-Catembe bridge is about three kilometers long, has a width of 680 metres and stands 60 metres above sea level. It forms part of a larger infrastructure project that includes a set of access roads on both banks and other roads. One of the adjoining roads links the bridge with the Ponto de Ouro border post (Mozambique) and the Kosi Bay border post (South Africa), which cuts the driving time from Mozambique's border with KwaZulu-Natal to Maputo from six hours to 90 minutes.

update (13 Dec 2016): According to the Mozambican daily newspaper Noticas, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources of Mozambique, Carlos Bonete said 70% of the work on the Maputo-Katembe bridge, which will connect Maputo with Catembe by crossing the Maputo Bay, has been completed. Full completition of the bridge is still planed for the end of 2017.

The governments of Mozambique and China are currently building Africa's largest suspension bridge, as well as its link roads, in Mozambique. The construction of the brigde started in June 2014 and is expected to finished in December 2017. The two lane bridge, which will connect Maputo with Catembe by crossing the Maputo Bay, will be three kilometers long, will have a width of 680m and will stand 60m above sea level. Adjoining roads will link the bridge with the Ponto de Ouro border post (Mozambique) and the Kosi Bay border post (South Africa), so that the driving time from Mozambique's border with KwaZulu-Natal to Maputo will be cut by about four hours.
