South Africa's national tourism board, South African Tourism, has unveiled a the new campaign "Don’t Travel Now So You Can Travel Later" to promote social/physical distancing and self-isolation to help curb the spread of the coronavirus. The campaign's two 90-second videos are both showing beautiful scenes of empty tourist attractions, places and streets in South Africa combined with a touching message of positivity for the future. Kudos South African Tourism!

South African Tourism released nine videos about South Africa's nine provinces!

South African Tourism has released nine two-minute video about the nine provinces of South Africa on Youtube. Each video portrays one of the provinces and highlights the major tourist attractions and main characteristics of the provinces. Unfortunately, South African Tourism did not provide any further information about the videos. Anyway, switch the videos to full screen, put your headphones on, sit back and enjoy the beauty of South Africa.

South African Tourism's (UK) brand new "Meet Your South Africa" tourism campaign puts the focus on the South Africa's outstanding professional tour guides and lets them portray the country. Switch the videos in the playlist below to full screen, put your head set on, press play and enjoy 12 great videos about 12 of South Africa's best tour guides.

New mobile phone app: "Madiba's journey"!

South African Tourism and the Nelson Mandela Foundation launched the "Madiba-inspired tourist attractions" map, which encourages tourists from around the world and South Africa to travel the country and walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela, in 2014. The map has now been developed into a GPS-enabled mobile phone app to further enhance visitors’ experiences in South Africa. The app uses location-based services and features tourist sites as well as general places of interest, including Mandela's post-presidential office at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Johannesburg, the Nelson Mandela Statue at Union Buildings in Pretoria, Nobel Square at the V&A Waterfront, Robben Island and Pollsmoor Prison (all in Cape Town) and Qunu in the Eastern Cape, where Madbia was laid to rest.

The app "Madiba's journey" is now available for download in English from the Apple iTunes store (iOS devices) and the Google Play store (Android devices). It will soon be available in other languages, including Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Dutch, French, German, Italian, simple Mandarin and Portuguese.

South African Tourism has released a new brand video named "Reconsider South Africa" on youtube. How do you like it?

Free: A Guide to Vegetarian, Vegan and Jain Dining in South Africa (100 pages)

South African Tourism, in association with the South African Chefs Association (SACA), published A Guide to Vegetarian, Vegan and Jain Dining in South Africa back in 2012 to encourage the tourism industry in South Africa to cater better for non meat-eating tourists. I just stumbled on the book on issuu and I must tell you that it is not only an interesting and inspiring read for the tourism industry, but also for everyone interested in cooking and dining. Foodies, listen up! Enjoy 100 pages full of non-meat recipes including vegetarian versions of South Africa classics like Bobotie, Malva Pudding and Bunny Chow!

South African Tourism: South Africa's nine provinces in one video (18 min)

South African Tourism has released new promotional videos: an 18-minute video about all nine provinces of South Africa, as well as single videos about the provinces, namely the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape, the Northern Cape, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu Natal. I couldn't find the video about the Free State on youtube, though. We will add the video as soon as it appears on the video-sharing website and let you know!

South Africa: 12 "Through the Lens" short films

Back in February 2013 we told you about South African Tourism's & National Geographic Channels' "Through the Lens" campaign, which follows the journey of 3 award-winning National Geographic to 3 iconic South African destinations: Cape Town, Durban and the Drakensberg. It took us, for some reasons, some weeks to find out that the three vignettes are actually part of a series of short videos which already started in 2008. Anyway, in meantime the "Through the Lens" campaign consists of 12 one-minute videos. Here we go:

South Africa's tourism body, South African Tourism, has released six new promotional videos about South Africa. Each of the one-minute videos is covering a different aspect of the country's rich touristic diversity: wildlife, lap of luxury, scenic beauty, roots & culture, culture & lifestyle as well as deep blue. Video: Neil Perry's fine-dining safari across South Africa

As part of a promotional campaign by South African Tourism, Australian chef and television presenter Neil Perry recently went on a so-called fine-dining safari across South Africa. He criss-crossed the country and visited Benny Masekwameng, Executive Chef at Southern Sun's MondoVino Restaurant in Johannesburg, prepared a traditional potjie at the Phinda Mountain Lodge in Zululand, had some outstanding wines at the Grande Provence estate in Franschoek, a chicken and prawn curry at the Oyster Box Hotel in Durban and the freshest seafood at the Ellerman House in Cape Town. Mouthwatering... Enjoy!

South Africa's tourism body, South African Tourism, has released a new Western Cape (promotional) video on youtube.com. The video features some of the province's highlights, including aerial views Cape Town, Table Mountain and the Cape Winelands, as well as some footage of the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn in the Little Karroo. South African Tourism released a new promotional video about KwaZulu Natal

South Africa's tourism body, South African Tourism, has released a new promotional video about KwaZulu Natal. The video is showing the province as seen from the air, so enjoy some great views of KwaZulu Natal's mountains and valleys, of the ocean and beaches, as well as of Durban, the largest city in KwaZulu Natal and the third largest city in South Africa. Happy travels!

South African Tourism: Four new (?) promotional videos

South African Tourism has uploaded four new promotional videos to their official youtube account. The videos seem rather old (at least quality/resolution-wise) and not part of the current "Leave Ordinary Behind" campaign. The four videos are highlighting the tourism categories "Adventure & Sport", "Wildlife & Nature", "Affordable Luxury" and "Culture & Heritage". What do you thing about the videos?

Parys & Vredefort Dome promotional video

South African Tourism is currently setting a focus on the country's Free State province, as part of its latest tourism campaign "Leave Ordinary Behind". One of their newest promotional videos is about Parys and neighbouring Vredefort Dome.
Parys in the Free State, located on the banks of the Vaal River, is only an one hours drive form Johannesburg. The town is known for its adventure sports, as well as being a weekend getaway for people from Gauteng.
The name of the town is actually the Afrikaans translation of Paris in France. The name was given to the town by a German settler who felt reminded of Paris and the Seine river by the location of the new "Parys" next to the Vaal River.



The Vredefort crater is the largest verified impact crater on Earth. In 2005, the Vredefort Dome was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for its geologic interest.

Vetkoek recipe: 
250gr flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
½ teaspoons salt
250 ml milk
2 eggs
Enough oil for deep-frying (should be 12 cm deep)

Mix flour, baking powder and salt together
Whisk egg, milk and sugar
Make a well in the dry ingredients, add milk and egg mixture and mix to very soft dough. You could add more milk if necessary.
Heat the oil to between 180 °C and 190°C.
Ladle level spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil (12 cm deep) and bake until brown on both sides, before removing from oil.

Video: Fabulous Food of the Free State

South African Tourism is currently setting a focus on the country's Free State province, as part of its latest tourism campaign "Leave Ordinary Behind". One of their newest promotional videos is called "Fabulous Food of the Free State", which takes us on a culinary tour through the in-land province. First stop in the video is the gourmet restaurant at "De Oude Kraal Country Estate & Spa" located just out of Bloemfontein. The next stop on the tour through the province is the "Phatt Chef Restaurant" in Clarens, before local resident Anna Moabi from Bethulie is showing us how to prepare Pap with moroho, a local plant that grows wild in the area.
