Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) in Lilongwe and Chileka International Airport (BLZ) in Blantyre today!
Ulendo Airlink, a local charter airline based in Malawi, is set to introduce scheduled flights between Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) in Lilongwe and Chileka International Airport (BLZ) in Blantyre. Effective 23 September 2019, the airline will initially operate 14 return frequencies per week on board a 15-Seater Dornier 228. The schedule of the new domestic service will be slightly adjusted as soon as the runway reconstruction at Chileka International Airport (CLZ) in Blantyre is completed.
Ulendo Airlink also plans to launch a four-weekly return service from Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) in Lilongwe to the Southern Lakeshore (Lake Malawi) and Liwonde National Park in April 2020.
Back in July 2019, the airline introduced a new triangle service between Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) in Lilongwe, Mzuzu Airport (ZZU) in Mzuzu in the Northern Region of Malawi and Likoma Airport (LIX) on Likoma Island in Lake Malawi.

Malawi: The MV Ilala has been withdrawn from Lake Malawi waters for routine maintenance! [update]
update (19 July 2019): We just got the confirmation from the Malawi Shipping Company that the MV Ilala is back in operation since 05 July 2019.
The famous MV Ilala, which operates weekly on Lake Malawi between Monkey Bay in the south and Chilumba in the north, has been withdrawn from Lake Malawi waters for routine maintenance by the Malawi Shipping Company. The maintenance work is expected to be finished by the end of the June 2019. The relatively new MV Chilembe, which is in operation on Lake Malawi since 2014, replaces the MV Ilala during that time. The MV Ilala is the oldest passenger ship on Lake Malawi. The 400 tonne passenger motor ship was built in 1949 and is in operation on the lake since 1951. It has a total capacity of 450 passenger and offers cabin class, first class, second class and economy class facilities as well as bars and restaurants.

Malawi: A new road eases travel to/from Nkhata Bay on Lake Malawi!
Nkhata Bay, located on the shores of Lake Malawi in Malawi, has become more and more popular with travellers over the recent years. Travelling to and from town is set to become easier now due to a new road that connects Mzuzu City and Nkhata Bay. The 46km road, which was named after after President Arthur Peter Mutharika, links the court house roundabout in Mzuzu City with the Nkhata Bay Jetty in Nkhata Bay on Lake Malawi. The road ("APM Highway") forms part of the M05 road which connects Mzuzu City via Nkhata Bay, Dwangwa, Nkkhotakota and Salima with the junction of the M01 road at Balaka Market.

Malawi: Likoma Airport (LIX) granted international licence!
The governemt of Malawi has granted Likoma Airport (LIX) an international licence, so that international airlines are now allowed to land at and to start from the recently upgraded airport. The airport is located on Likoma Island, which has an overall area of 18 km² and is the larger of two inhabited Malawian islands in Lake Malawi.
Likoma Island and the smaller of the two inhabited islands in Lake Malawi, neighboring Chizumulu Island, both lie just a few kilometres from Mozambique and are entirely surrounded by Mozambican territorial waters. As of now, the only way to get to Likoma Island is by boat (from Nkhata Bay, duration: up to 5hrs+) or by charter aircraft (from Lilongwe; flight duration: 1hrs, $295 per person one way in Sept 2016).

Malawi: "Lake of Stars" festival is returning to the shores of Lake Malawi!
The famous, award-winning and simply awesome Lake of Stars festival will be returning to the shores of Lake Malawi in 2015. The arts & music festival will take place at the Sunbird Nkopola Lodge from 25 - 27 September 2015. The lodge is located right at Lake Malawi about 20 km north of the town of Mangochi in the southern region of Malawi.
The Lake of Stars festival features artists from Malawi, Africa and the rest of the world and promotes tourism in Malawi, raises funds for charity and provides travellers and Malawians alike with the opportunity to enjoy incredible live music in an exotic and beautiful location. Alongside the main festival at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge, free outreach activities will also take place in neighboring Chipoka Village for the local community.

Malawi: New ferry launched on Lake Malawi!
The famous steel-riveted MV Ilala, which was in service on Lake Malawi since 1951, has been replaced by a brandnew ferry. The new vessel, named MV Chilembe, is 32 metres long and 7 metres wide, with two fixed-pitch propellers and two Caterpillar C32 TTA (WOSR) engines rating 2460 bkW (3300 bhp) power. It will carry 120 passengers and 20 tons of cargo, including food and medicines, at a maximum speed of 28 knots. The ferry's twice weekly schedule will call at the remote villages and islands in the north of Lake Malawi, and take only two hours to reach Likoma Island, a journey which previously took over seven hours. The MV Chilembe is operated by privately owned Malawi Shipping Company.

The famous, award-winning and simply awesome Lake of Stars festival will be returning to the shores of Lake Malawi in 2014. The arts & music festival will take place at the Sunbird Nkopola Lodge from 26 - 28 September 2014. The video covers literally everything the traveller planing to visit Malawi wants to know - the usual "how to get there", the country's nature reserves, landscapes and wildlife, its famous Lake Malawi and the attractions and activities the lake has to offer, as well as Malawi's cultural centres, festivals and its restaurant and accommmodation options. Malawi: Lake of Stars takes a year off to support local initiatives
The Lake of Stars festival team will be taking a year off in 2012 from producing the festival to focus on strengthening local talent and supporting local initiatives, but don't worry. Will Jameson, the Director and founder of Lake of Stars, already confirmed that the festival will defo return to the shores of Lake Malawi in 2013. In a press statement, he said: "After eight years of the festival, we have decided to take stock of our experiences in putting the festival together, and spend some time supporting local initiatives in Malawi. We also want to take time this year to incorporate the feedback from Malawians and international festival goers, artists and sponsors to help us build a bigger and better event in 2013."
The Lake of Stars festival saw record attendance in 2011 and the project has reached an audience of over 300 million people through media coverage since 2009. The 2011 festival generated a record-breaking $1.3 million dollars of local spend.

"Malawi in a Mini" - a roadtrip around Malawi
Sarah & Lisa, two photojournalists from South Africa's travel & outdoor magazine "Getaway", took a Mini in September & October 2011 and travelled all the way from Johannesburg up to Lake Malawi, travelled around the lake and, according to the pics, had a perfect jol at the Lake of Stars festival. Lake Malawi / Lake Nyasa fact file
Lake Malawi contains the largest number of fish species of any lake in the world, probably over 500 from ten families. Particularly noteworthy are the Cichlids, of which all but five of over 400 species are endemic to Lake Malawi. The lake contains 30% of all known cichlid species.
Lake Malawi, the third largest in Africa and the eighth largest lake in the world, is located between Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. It is the second deepest lake in Africa (only Lake Tanganyika is deeper), though its northern shore gives no hint of its depth.

Lake Malawi (or Lake Nyasa) is roughly 580 kilometres long, and about 75 kilometres wide at its widest point. The total surface area of this lake is about 29,600km².
The geographic name of the lake itself is highly disputed. Malawi claims that the lake is named "Lake Malawi", whereas most other countries, most notably the Republic of Tanzania, and many internationally-made maps state that the name of the lake is "Lake Nyasa". The official Mozambican name is "Lago Niassa".
"Lake of Stars" is the nickname for Lake Malawi coined back in the days by David Livingstone. The name reffers to the lights from lanterns of the fisherman in Malawi on their boats, that resemble, from a distance, stars in the sky. Today the "Lake of Stars" is also an annual music festival held at the shores of Lake Malawi in Malawi.

The Magunda, based in Cape Maclear in the south of the lake, is a 12 bed, luxurious houseboat fitted with a kitchen, lounge and dining area, toilets and showers, a diving platform, and upper deck. The boat has four cabins, two of which have double beds, one has four beds, and the crew cabin has four beds. [more info]
