Wild animals killed 86 people in Mozambique in 2011

The Government of Mozambique has announced some data regarding wildlife-human related incidents in 2011. According to Government spokesperson Alberto Nkutumula, at least 86 people were killed by animals in Mozambique in 2011 and another 60 people were injured by wild animals during the same period. Most incidents were caused by crocodiles, which killed 47 people in Mozambique, followed by elephants (20 people) and hippos (13 people).

Mozambican wildlife authorities culled a total of 336 animals in 2011 to counter the problem (250 crocodiles, 46 elephants, 17 hippos, 13 buffalos, 4 lions, 3 snakes, 2 hyenas & 1 leopard).

The areas worst affected in 2011 are the Zambezi River basin and the central province of Sofala.

The following video, shot in the Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa, is showing a footage rarely been seen by most of us. The rangers of the reserve put out a camera trap to film the "activity" around a hippo carcass... and it is not only the typical carnivores making a visit!

Video: Hippo rescues wildebeest and zebra foals (Mara River, Tanzania)

This might be the first ever recorded rescue of a baby wildebeest and a baby zebra by the same hippo on the Mara River (Serengeti NP) in Tanzania. Both foals were rescued within 10 min as they were trying to cross the raging river.



The hippo was watching as the wildebeest herd swam past. As soon as the calf jumped in, the hippo swam up to it and pushed it along all the way across until it had reached safety on the other side. It then went back and did the same for a zebra foal just minutes later.

Kruger National Park: temporarily no Mountain Bike Tours

Due to an incident with a hippo (read the forum post on the sanparks forum) during a mountain bike tour starting at Olifants camp in the Kruger National Park all other cycling tours at Olifants are temporarily not available.

I'll keep you updated about further info about the tours!

update: just got an email from SANparks reservations desk saying "The mountain bike is closed until futher notice please contact Olifant on this number for more information (013)735-6606."
