Air Botswana introduces temporary fuel surcharge from 21 April 2026

Travellers flying with Air Botswana should note that the airline has introduced a temporary fuel surcharge on all tickets issued from 21 April 2026 until further notice. The move follows continued increases in aviation fuel prices across the region, with the airline stating that it has been managing rising operating costs for several months, including operational adjustments where possible, before implementing the fuel surcharge.

Following a recent notification of increased local fuel prices, the adjustment has now become necessary.

The surcharge will:

• apply to domestic flights in Botswana and regional flights in Southern Africa
• be reflected separately on your ticket for transparency
• be charged per flight sector

Importantly, tickets issued before 21 April 2026 will not be affected.

For travellers planning trips within Botswana or regional connections across Southern Africa, this may result in slightly higher airfares, so it is advisable to check final ticket pricing before booking.

Emirates ditches fuel surcharge

Emirates, the Arab world’s largest airline, announced the withdrawal of its fuel surcharge on all flights. The Dubai-based carrier had only introduced a fuel surcharge on flights on 18  April 2011 after a steep rise in international oil prices.
Tim Clark, president Emirates Airline, commented: "In line with the recent decrease in fuel prices Emirates has removed its fuel surcharge on all tickets. The removal of this surcharge reflects our long-standing commitment to our customers."
Emirates ist the largest airline in the Middle East, operating over 2,400 passenger flights per week from its hub at Dubai International Airport Terminal 3, to 105 cities in 62 countries across six continents.

British Airways: Fuel surcharge increase on long-haul flights

British Airways will increase its fuel surcharge on long-haul flights as of 08 April 2011. This is the third hike in four months for the airline.

The change will mean:

• For World Traveller flights over nine hours an increase from £76 a sector to £88. On flights of less than nine hours an increase from £63 a sector to £75.
• For World Traveller Plus flights over nine hours an increase from £94.50 a sector to £106.50. On flights of less than nine hours an increase from £73 per sector to £85.
• For First and Club World flights over nine hours an increase from £108 per sector to £125. On flights of less than nine hours an increase from £88 per sector to £105.

The move reflects the continuing substantial increase in the price of oil and a 14 per cent rise in the spot price of jet fuel since our last fuel surcharge increase in December 2010. There will be no fuel surcharge increase to any British Airways’ shorthaul services.
